Adele Backwoods lives the career most actresses would envy, working full-time in the cast of a musical theater company. She just didn’t expect her free time to be so lonely. When her childhood friend, Peggy, falls ill and needs someone to watch her godson for a few days, Adele rushes back to Long Beach, California—and runs straight into Clayton, her childhood sweetheart and Peggy’s brother.

Their first romance ended when Adele refused to follow Clayton to D.C. after College. Still, she decides there’s no harm in hooking up. Only for the summer. Hearts not involved.

Then she receives an offer to be the lead in a Broadway show. She’d have to move to NYC and leave Clayton behind. Suddenly, Adele’s not as impartial to Clayton as she thought… not even with her future on the line.


Clayton Elliot hasn’t left his lobbying job to go back to his hometown since College. His sister Peggy’s cancer treatment comes before his bad memories, though, and he returns to Long Beach to be there for her. The fact that Adele—Peggy’s best friend and his ex—would be in California too doesn’t occur to him until they’re face-to face again. He vows he won’t make the same mistake twice.

But Adele’s still the sexy, ambitious woman who sparks a fire in Clayton whenever they’re together. Why not live in the present and enjoy each other, no strings attached?

    Years ago Adele left her home town and her true love for the bright lights of Broadway. Adele is back in town to help a sick friend and Clayton wants her back. Adele is set on leaving town to pursue her life long dream of being a star on Broadway but once she gets there her dream is not what she expected. There is drama and some challenges that Clayton and Adele go through before they come back to each other. Very sweet enjoyable read. Recommended. I received a free copy of this book from hidden gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.

    Adele and Clayton have so much to overcome and old fears make these changes difficult to overcome, but I love the perspective shown for their happiness and look forward to reading more about this group in Apple Valley!

    Adele and Clayton back and forth will they or won't they. It was an interesting story. Adele comes from a rich family and wants nothing to do with their world. Clayton wants into that world and doesn't understand why Adele fights it. They do love each other that's for sure. But they each have careers they feel are very important. And so back and forth they go from California to New York and back multiple times. Clayton is successful but insecure when it comes to Adele. He let's her director get in his head and gives her an ultimatum. Adele makes her choice. It was an interesting enough story. Mix in some sad sister has cancer scenes and you have the whole story. It wasn't very detailed and the time jumps were kind of dizzying. One line they were in June and the next they were all the way in September. Jeez. It felt like I was skimming through a story. But it was nice.

    My first book by this author. The story was an okay read although I found some parts a bit slow. I am more of a dialogue reader and not so much inner feelings and descriptive paragraphs. I get they are needed but for me, the story needed more dialogue. Clayton and Adele were a likeable couple and you rooted for their second chance and felt emotional when they were pushed away from each other. The story is emotional and you feel their sadness and angst. I voluntarily received an arc copy of this book from HiddenGems

    A broken heart is a terrible burden. Overcoming one is an even bigger ome. What happens if you run into the person that broke it, and chased you away from home? Can you give your love a second chance, and heal your broken heart?

    I enjoyed this emotional and heartwarming second chance romance by new-to-me author Jaylee Austin with characters you root for and want to know and a story that immediately captivated me and kept me entertained and engaged until I read the last word. I loved the undeniable chemistry between Adele and Clayton and the secondary characters added to my reading pleasure. I received a copy of this book from Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving my review.

    I am leaving this review after receiving a free copy. Decent story. I went from poor Clayton to what a wimp Clayton to seriously Clayton have some self respect. Although no one deserves what Adele dished out. The entire story she proves she believes her wants and desires are more important than anyone. The author threw Peggy in just so it wouldn't appear that Adele is totally heartless. It is a switch up from the girl doing the pining.
