The Harpist Kindle Edition

3.4 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

This dark romance focuses on the subjects of obsession, abuse, and mental illness which may be uncomfortable for some readers. But the question is: How can a woman's obsession for a man allow her to accept his abuse and deny his mental instability to the point of putting her very life in danger?

Young and naïve, Brianna Campbell, has dreams of becoming a professional harpist and when she’s accepted by a prestigious music academy in Edinburgh, Scotland after high school graduation, she leaves the family farm in Ohio with high hopes.
Once there, however, she becomes the target of Malcolm McGarity, a famous rock musician who has returned to his hometown of Edinburgh, worn out and bored with his lifestyle, nights of partying and loose women. Once he sets his sights on the beautiful and innocent harp student, he determines to have her despite the warning of his longtime friend and fellow musician, Gerry Ferguson, to keep away.
Gerry, who had lesser success as a musician and who has left the music scene, works at the Academy where his sister, Fiona, is a student. It doesn’t take long before Gerry falls in love with Brianna and warns her away from his narcissistic friend, believing he will only destroy her as he has so many others.
Who will Brianna choose?
The wealthy, charming, and devastatingly attractive Malcolm, who woos her with red roses and fairytale promises…or kind and caring Gerry who has nothing more to offer her than his heart?

As a child, I was mesmerized by story tellers and my mother always made sure I had a supply of books close at hand while I was growing up. Sitting on her lap and listening to her read to me is one of my earliest memories. I remember drawing pictures and then making up stories to go with them, and as I got older, my stories became longer and more fanciful. At age ten, I began to write them down, and when I was twelve, I wrote my first "book," all handwritten. I wrote during rainy days in gym class when we all had to stay in the locker room and sit on benches. I had a small cult following of friends who waited for me to finish each page which I would then pass down the row. When I got a typewriter for my thirteenth birthday, I typed up my "masterpiece" and put it in a 3-ring binder then hid it away. The story was actually quite silly. Having a typewriter, however, made it possible for me to write even more, which I did on almost a daily basis.

But, as happens to many young, aspiring writers, reality grabbed me and when I graduated from high school and headed to college then into the work force, the dream of becoming an author washed away. It wasn't until I turned 62 and experienced my 3rd job layoff, that I decided to try and make my writing dream come true.

Writing has become an addiction to me, and I'm finding that ideas for other scenarios and characters keep flooding my brain, with the characters screaming, "Write about me! Write about me!"

And, that's what I intend to do.

Very dark story. I couldn't put it down. Lots of truth in it how people used to ignore mental illness. So sad that helped was not given sooner.

As with all of LInda's books, once I start reading it, I can't put it down. With this book in particular, I felt such sadness for Malcolm. His mental illness wasn't WHO he was, it just made him act in ways that not even he understood. Kudos to Linda for not shying away from the topic of mental illness in a romantic novel. I loved the book and hope she continues to write. She is a very gifted author.

For a novel entitled "The Harpist," there is remarkably little about being a harpist. Brianna works hard to escape the family farm and follow her dream to Edinburgh, and within a few weeks her dreams are forgotten and she's back on the family farm, complete with a husband she doesn't love. The writing is poor, and Ms. Rice *really* needs to be taught when and how to use commas -- not to mention the difference between "lay" and "lie" and what a straitjacket is. I obtained this book hoping for soft-core porn, but the sex scenes were just tedious and implausible. Almost as implausible as a man who is teetering on the edge of madness continuing to teeter for *more than 20 years* while still being a music superstar on the level of Mick Jagger.

I read the reviews after reading the book.

The story encompasses an abusive narcissistic relationship with mental health issues. This is darker than a "dark romance" and might be difficult for some readers but does have a Happily Ever After (HEA) ending.
