The Necklace: The Dusky Club, June 1962 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 387 ratings

What if you could travel back into the past to meet the man of your dreams at a time when it would be possible for him to fall in love with you?

Susan does just that when she meets two ladies from Haiti while on a cruise with her childhood friend, Lynn. Mika, the elderly of the two ladies, claims she can see into Susan’s soul and that if she sends her back in time to meet James, the man whom Susan has dreamed of for fifty years, Susan will learn something important about him and about herself.
Susan travels back to the year 1962 in her 17-year-old body, where she meets James, age 20, a member of a band that will one day become the greatest band of all time. Susan is stunned and delighted when James is instantly drawn to her, inviting her out for tea and offering to walk her back to her hotel after the band quits playing for the night.
But much to her dismay, Susan’s 17-year-old hormones begin to play havoc with her 62-year-old brain, tempting her towards a relationship with James that she’s not really certain she wants.

Will James end up being the paragon Susan’s always thought him to be? Or will she learn that sometimes, when a dream comes true, it’s not quite what you expected?

This book (and all books in “The Necklace” series) is dedicated to all those women whose teenage heart was stolen and captured by a rock star/musician and who have remained loyal through the years. May this fantasy story lighten your spirit, make you both laugh and cry and let you know that your dreams never need to die.

Review

Rice tells a stunning story of emotional growth, love, longing, regret, and mistakes in this first installment in her time travel romance series. - BooksCoffee

Romance, drama, time travel, and mystery combine in this sensual and compelling tale of 62-year-old Susan, who is sent back in time to meet the teenage crush she has dreamt of for fifty years after meeting a mystic on a cruise. When Susan heads back to 1962, she soon discovers her long-lost love but soon learns that fifty years of imagination and the actual reality of her new paramour might not quite match up. The mixture of Susan's 17-year-old passion with the wisdom and cynicism of a 62-year-old makes for an incredibly compelling lead character, and this is a wonderfully wistful and interesting twist on a time-travel romance. As Susan attempts to answer the "What's If" that has plagued her throughout her adult life, she learns some valuable lessons, experiences love and heartbreak, and emerges with a new sense of herself. This is a wonderfully entertaining fantasy romance coupled with interesting, well-drawn characters and unexpected twists and turns. A fantastic read which is charmingly and confidently told. - Review by Book Excellence (bookexcellence.com)

As a child, I was mesmerized by story tellers and my mother always made sure I had a supply of books close at hand while I was growing up. Sitting on her lap and listening to her read to me is one of my earliest memories. I remember drawing pictures and then making up stories to go with them, and as I got older, my stories became longer and more fanciful. At age ten, I began to write them down, and when I was twelve, I wrote my first "book," all handwritten. I wrote during rainy days in gym class when we all had to stay in the locker room and sit on benches. I had a small cult following of friends who waited for me to finish each page which I would then pass down the row. When I got a typewriter for my thirteenth birthday, I typed up my "masterpiece" and put it in a 3-ring binder then hid it away. The story was actually quite silly. Having a typewriter, however, made it possible for me to write even more, which I did on almost a daily basis.

But, as happens to many young, aspiring writers, reality grabbed me and when I graduated from high school and headed to college then into the work force, the dream of becoming an author washed away. It wasn't until I turned 62 and experienced my 3rd job layoff, that I decided to try and make my writing dream come true.

Writing has become an addiction to me, and I'm finding that ideas for other scenarios and characters keep flooding my brain, with the characters screaming, "Write about me! Write about me!"

And, that's what I intend to do.

Most who grew up obsessed with The Beatles will easily identify with this sweet novel, which provides a fantasized fly-on-the-wall perspective of what one of the Fab Four's pre-fame personalities may have been like. Although the portrayal centers around "James" who is in a band in Brighton, England in 1962, the action and narrative clearly parallels Paul McCartney before Beatle fame has struck. The writer does a wonderful job capturing McCartney's, looks, speaking style and personality. Those of us who've seen A Hard Day's Night and Help can visualize McCartney throughout the story. Clever and humorously reworked but easily recognizable Beatle song parodies are sprinkled generously throughout. James is a good characterization of how fans would have pictured McCartney to be as a young man living with his father: thoughtful, and gentlemanly, as well as a sex maniac. And who wouldn't want to go on a picnic with Paul. A product of English upbringing during that early rock and roll era, involving male chauvinism and self-centered egotism.

The story starts out in the present when two 62-year-old best friends go on a cruise. They meet two Haitian fortune tellers, who give Susan opportunity to travel back in time to meet the man she has been obsessed with since her teens. Susan is told that she will learn a valuable lesson about herself. Susan travels back possessing her sophisticated 62-year-old experience in the body of her ex 17-year-old self. To not give everything away, this is a good fantasy well written and plotted out and the idea of a lesson is necessary to the novel's denouement.

For me, the "lesson learned" gets somewhat nullified because Susan hints early on, how much she has in common with her husband that James can never fulfill. In essence, everything Susan imagined in James already exists in her own husband.

Our idols are best left as fantasies. In that light, and though I greatly enjoyed the book, being a diehard Beatle fan, the other three are not treated with much attention. The protagonist, Susan, is never excited at being around John's or George's counterparts. Idealized as James is, he is narrow minded and controlling in his treatment of women--very common amongst males at the time. Thus, probably very accurate generalization. However, just as Susan knew James would become a vegetarian, she also had to know of his (James/Paul's) future social conscience, progressive attitudes and spiritual expansion. The Beatles quickly evolved from "teen idols" to highly revered artists of intellect. Susan's learned lesson somewhat contradicts this eventual growth with the implication that she can discuss politics, etc with her husband but could never do the same with James. That is my only contention, if I have one with the plot. The Beatles transcended into political, socially conscious people along the journey of their unparalleled fame. This has been touched upon in so many places that, the story stands strongly as told through the lens of a fortunate fan who got up close and personal to a dream. The tale stands on its own even if there was no Beatle "parallel". This is very creative fun page turning fiction, with more to come. I look forward to escaping into the sequel.

The Necklace: The Dusky Club, June 1962 by Linda S. Rice has a unique premise that is executed well. This story is a combination of a love story and time travel. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to reunite with the one that got away, this is an enticing story. When Susan is on a cruise with her best friend, she meets an interesting woman, who can transport Susan back in time. She goes back to the year of 1962 and has the chance of a lifetime. This book is a fun combination of light eroticism and the supernatural, neither of which is overblown. An excellent and intriguing read, this tale is highly recommended.

Forget 50 shades of Grey- this is the many off colors of the hottest rockstar of all time. If you can get whom this book is in reference to, you'll surely agree. If not.. Go read Twilight or something because this book is for us "big girls" who have at one time or the other (if not even still) secretly (or not so) lust after this vision of pure angelic (if only in looks) ROCK GOD!

Have you ever felt like you were born in the wrong time? Felt out of place in the space and time in which you are frozen? Have you become helplessly enamored by a person who by now is perhaps old enough to be your father but you still see him as the beauty that he was in his prime? Imagine the chance to go back in time. To put yourself in the place you've always wanted to be. To meet the person you've always thought was "the love of your life" To you he is perfect. Talented, handsome, witty, charming, the epitome of British sophistication and intelligence - let's not forget FAMOUS.. and sexy beyond belief with eyes that could see right thru to your very desires then turn around and write the perfect love song for you. This, my friends, is what this book just might do for you if you let it be. Turn off your mind, relax and float your imagination in this book and absorb yourself into the book's subject, Susan, who has just this opportunity; To go back in time and meet the man she's always had a large portion of her heart reserved for. Is he what her heart has made him out to be? Is he truly that perfect? or is he something else entirely? Does all her innermost wishes and desires come true or is the saying - "be careful what you wish for" the stark reality of putting our heart throbs on a pedestal.

This book will take you on a true Magical Mystery Tour that is not for the squeamish of heart.. This is not for the prudish.. This is not for those lacking in sense of humor. This is a fantasy that many a girl has had in her young heart for a person that celebrity (or time) has kept well out of reach.

sexy, hot, descriptively seductive. All books in the series will leave you bothered. (in one way or another) Highly recommend.

Pretty good, unless you object to the rape scene, which the main characters did not consider to be rape, but I did. It was unnecessary. The constant denial of the abuse was fatiguing. There was a contradiction in that one of the characters was reported to have not told another that they were from the future when later it was said that she had done so. I did appreciate the premise. Overall, the writing was good.

The feel here is very much one of unrestricted indulgence in a relatable fantasy, so it’s little wonder that such has wide appeal.

I think the main attraction of this is exactly that—it’s unpretentious romantic fluff, so if that’s what you’re looking for, that’s what you’ll find. What it’s not, on the other hand, is especially refined—the overall narrative is a tapestry of oft-enjoyed tropes woven together without prejudice to creativity, and the dialogue, a weak point of many debut authors, certainly would be very much at home on AO3.

I will note that while many Americans struggle to write Britain well, Rice does a very fair job of representing 60s Britain. Worth noting also that being the same age as her protagonist, there’s a fair chance she’s writing her own nostalgia into this, and a fine job she does of that.
