Desperate Knight (Knights of Kilbourne Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

No time... No options... No plan... No one said saving the world would be easy.

Morgan McRobbie and Lady Marissa duBerry swing back into swashbuckling action, facing old enemies, new threats, and a diabolical conspiracy—not to mention a more personal battle, one with hearts and pride at stake.

As the pair escorts Prince Robert to the dwarf king’s court, a scheme intended to hurl men and dwarves into a devastating war is unfolding. Morgan ends up sidetracked by a kidnapped dwarf and a centuries-old feud, while a mysterious wizard’s revelations shake Marissa to her core, throwing into question everything she thought she knew about her past and future. And the advent of a rival for Marissa’s affections threatens any hope of a happy ending—if they survive.

Once again, the desperate knight and indomitable damsel must hazard everything on a single throw of the dice, gambling on untested allies and unimagined weapons to save their world.

The odds have never been worse.

Keith W. Willis graduated (long ago) with a degree in English Lit from Berry College, which has the distinction of being the world's largest college campus. He now lives in the scenic Hudson Valley/Adirondack region of NY with his wife Patty. Keith is certain those rumbling noises attributed to Henry Hudson's crew are really just the dragons grumbling.

Keith’s interests include reading classic fantasy/sci-fi and mystery novels; camping and canoeing; and cutthroat games of Scrabble. He began writing seriously in 2008, when the voices in his head got too annoying to ignore. When he’s not making up stories he manages a group of database content editors at a global information technology firm.

The Knights of Kilbourne series begins with TRAITOR KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2015) which has won awards for both fantasy and romance. The series continues with DESPERATE KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2017), ENCHANTED KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2020), and STOLEN KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2022). The next book in the series, tentatively titled FATEFUL KNIGHT, is currently being drafted, with a target release date of 2024.

I really enjoyed the first book, but I found this one to be a page turner. My experience has been that in a promising series, the volumes that follow tend to get better with each addition. In this book, the characters we have come to know have gained depth in their personalities. I feel as if I am meeting some friends I have only received found and an eager to get to know them better. The author does not disappoint. I can't wait to read the next one!

I have to agree with a previous reviewer, Desperate Knight surpasses the first book in the Knights of Kilbourne series. There is so much packed into this book but so carefully choreographed, instead of being overwhelmed you are thoroughly immersed.
    And the Dragon returns.
    And a bit of magic.
    And so much intrigue...
Enjoy! I did. Looking forward to book 3 which as I understand is nigh.

I enjoy books that contain dragons and was glad to find this book. Easy to read and the action goes throughout the book with the main character, Morgan, and his Lady. I'd like to see more dragons!

There have only been a few books that I have read and when I got to the last page I was so deep into the story that I didn't realize it was the end .... and Desperate Knight by Keith W. Willis is now one of the books.

Desperate Knight is the second book in the Knights of Kilbourne series and if you read the first book, Traitor Knight, you may have felt like you were reading an adult fairy tale. And I'm sure you loved it and couldn't wait to get your hands on the second one .... and now I have.

In Desperate Knight we are again along for the ride of Knight-Commander of the King's Legion Morgan McRobbie and Lady-in-waiting of the Queen Lady Marissa duBerry and they do not disappoint !!

Marissa is going home to visit her parents and Morgan is going along as he escorts Prince Robert to spend a year with the Dwarves learning their culture while their prince, R'gm'l, will study at Kilbourne. Once Morgan does the exchange of princes, he will return to Kilbourne while Marissa will remain in Bremaine to extend her visit with her parents.

While they are traveling to Bremaine they assist an older gentlemen who is about to be attacked and he joins them on they journey. When the lot get to Marissa's parents, they find that Marissa's parents and the old gentlemen are old friends ..... and they have a magical connection !!

I will stop here with talk about the story within because, quite frankly, I do not want to ruin any surprises and yes there are some !! I will say that if you read the first book and were engrossed in the love story between Morgan and Marissa, you will not be disappointed as it continues. Also the story will take some twists and turns that you will never see coming but once you read them, you will be amazed !!! And like I said I was shocked when I was reading the last page, not knowing it was the end, and I was left with my jaw on the floor !!! Willis knows how to keep reading wanting more and I am very thankful that I can pick up the third book, Enchanted Knight, as soon as my schedule allows !!!

With the intention of ending a long and bitter feud, King Rhys has agreed to a treaty to end the hostilities between Kilbourne and the Kingdom of the Drawfs. But unbeknown to the King, those who want to see the treaty fail are plotting against him.

Trouble seems to always find Morgan McRobbie, especially when a certain lady is involved. Between trying to protect the King, he battles with his own heart. But time is against him. Can he reach Kilbourne in time to save the King? And has he left it too late to tell Lady Marissa of his love?

Traitor's Knight was a page-turning adventure, with such memorable characters that when Keith W. Willis approached me and asked if I would like to read the sequel, Desperate Knight (Knights of Kilbourne Book 2), I couldn't say yes fast enough!

Desperate Knight (Knights of Kilbourne Book 2) picks up where Traitor's Knight left off. I am pleased to say that once again Mr Willis has delivered a masterpiece in historical fantasy.

I adored the characterization of Morgan and Marissa in book 1, and I love them even more in Book 2. They are both such wonderful protagonists. They are full of the unexpected, especially Marissa, and they were so well fleshed that they were very easy to visualise. Their romance was also very sweet and helped to enhance the story.

The plot is full of twists and turns. Who is the enemy? Who can our heroes trust? The story certainly kept me turning those pages.

The characters certainly get themselves into some desperate situations, but there is also a great deal of humour in this book, which had me laughing out loud!

The antagonists were equally compelling, and they keep our heroes second guessing right up until that final chapter.

I think Desperate Knight works very well as a standalone, but to get the most out of the story, I do recommend you begin with Book 1. You won't be disappointed.

If you are looking for quality historical fantasy, with a touch of romance, then Desperate Knight is the book for you.

    I Highly Recommend.

    * I received an ARC of this book, from the author, for review consideration.*

5.0 out of 5 stars Commander Morgan McRobbie is facing a new challenge, probably ...

Commander Morgan McRobbie is facing a new challenge, probably the most dangerous, complicated, and risky of his life: proposing to Marissa dyBerry. On top of that, he has to escort young Prince Robert through a journey to meet the Dwarves while keeping an eye on an enemy spy and dealing with a wizard, and Marissa’s family secrets.
This lovely sequel of The Traitor Knight is full of adventure, action, and humour, and romance! Also a stubborn dragon with his own ideas about what thievery is. It’s a quick, entertaining read. Looking forward to reading what comes next.
