Traitor Knight (Knights of Kilbourne Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 90 ratings

When Morgan McRobbie rescues a damsel-in-distress from a dragon, he expects she’ll swoon, murmuring “My hero!” Instead, Marissa has only loathing for the man everyone believes will betray Kilbourne. That’s fine with Morgan. A woman in his life would just complicate things.

A high-level informer threatens the kingdom’s security, and Morgan is out to stop him. Posing as a turncoat himself, he’s walking a fine line between honor and betrayal. A single misstep could result in disaster, and his mission is fraught with distractions: the pesky dragon, a pair of conniving courtiers, and the disillusioned damsel who’s certain Morgan can’t be trusted.

If Morgan’s going to save the kingdom, win the girl, and manage to stay alive, he’ll need to step up his game. Because the traitor is lurking in the shadows, and his scheme calls not just for the betrayal of Kilbourne, but also the destruction of Morgan McRobbie.

Keith W. Willis graduated (long ago) with a degree in English Lit from Berry College, which has the distinction of being the world's largest college campus. He now lives in the scenic Hudson Valley/Adirondack region of NY with his wife Patty. Keith is certain those rumbling noises attributed to Henry Hudson's crew are really just the dragons grumbling.

Keith’s interests include reading classic fantasy/sci-fi and mystery novels; camping and canoeing; and cutthroat games of Scrabble. He began writing seriously in 2008, when the voices in his head got too annoying to ignore. When he’s not making up stories he manages a group of database content editors at a global information technology firm.

The Knights of Kilbourne series begins with TRAITOR KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2015) which has won awards for both fantasy and romance. The series continues with DESPERATE KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2017), ENCHANTED KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2020), and STOLEN KNIGHT (Champagne Books, 2022). The next book in the series, tentatively titled FATEFUL KNIGHT, is currently being drafted, with a target release date of 2024.

A Fantastical Masterpiece

A Fantastical Masterpiece
I met Keith 4 months ago, just before Christmas, at an holiday craft stand in Altamont. I was looking for a book to read while on vacation when I found this “Fantastical” masterpiece. It’s a real page turner while on the Virgin Islands!

Traitor Knight is an exciting book, with great characters whom the author develops beautifully with outstanding plotting and storytelling skills. The book has an “old time” feel to it, which is hard to find, nowadays. So much of today’s fiction is fraught with filthy language, gratuitous sex, and nightmarish, cruel violence. Not so with Traitor Knight. It’s such a fun, and enjoyable book that doesn’t need any of that sort of thing. Rather than wincing at unnecessary garbage, I found myself smiling with pleasure at the scenes, and often laughing out loud at the humor. The action goes along at a fine clip to hold the reader’s interest. I could not put it down!
Upon finishing Traitor Knight, I immediately ordered a few copies of it to give as Christmas gifts to family and friends, and the second book, Desperate Knight, as a Christmas gift to myself.
I cannot recommend Traitor Knight highly enough!

I should first say (with great pride) that I am the author's sister. And rather than knowing from the beginning, as a good sister should, that it would be a fantastic work of literary genius, I approached the reading of Keith's first novel with some anxiety. I read fiction voraciously, know what I like, and am a very bad liar. But having finished the last page a short while ago, I can say with absolute certainty that I loved this book. It is by turns--and sometimes all at once--clever, heroic, humorous, fantastic, suspenseful, and romantic. I appreciated certain details that less capable writers might have deemed unimportant, but which added dimension and texture to plot, place, and character. And while the romantic aspect of the plot closely adheres to a time-honored formula for successful romance writing, the characters are fully realized and believable. With even the minor characters, it is clear the writer knows these individuals well--no costumed cardboard cut-outs filling in the scenery of this novel--and they are the industrious, courtly, stubborn, greedy, loyal, opportunistic, brave, witty, weary, kind-hearted, noble, cruel, and otherwise flawed and colorful mish-mash of humanity. I won't focus on plot details; for that you'll just have to read it! This has all the elements of successful fiction, and kept me turning pages well into the Knight (see what I did there?). It even ended well, and I am amazed at the number of otherwise capable writers who end their novels in clunky, unsatisfying ways. My only complaint is how long I will have to wait for the next one. Well done, you!!

I'd call this fantasy romantic suspense. Has the feel and pacing more of romantic suspense but in a fantasy setting.

I am bummed the dragon wasn't used more. Felt like potential for more with that than was explored in this book. But this means the dragon plot line ends up feeling like a side thing when the actual story is elsewhere.

I liked this book well enough, especially because the stupid ‘my loved one is being held hostage by a bad guy, so of course I have to do whatever that person says even if it hurts a whole bunch of other people I have a responsibility to protect and no guarantee the evil dude won’t kill them anyway’ trope was overturned, but the female protagonist slaps the male right across the face way too often and it’s just brushed off as nothing. The ML is a gentleman who has given an oath to keep secrets for his king, and can’t tell the girl anything about what is going on, but he is never disrespectful or puts a hand on her inappropriately, yet the girl keeps slapping him, which is even more ridiculous since he’s supposed to be a dangerous traitor according to rumors. Not only is that Darwin award level stupid if you actually believe those rumors, but even when the relationship improves, she keeps doing it for increasingly arbitrary reasons. You don’t do that do someone you love. No only is it humiliating and not something any sane man would be okay with or brush off, but it’s not safe, and could accidentally injure someone’s eyes or something. I’m sorry, but the guy in a relationship can be abused too, and I don’t care if you’re mad, or even if you have a good reason to be mad, lady, that’s not okay. It’s such a stupid trope.

Traitor Knight was such a fun read! It's a fantasy that takes place in a medieval setting, but it also had elements of romance and mystery. It had dragons, murder, intrigue, treachery, and even humor. Seriously, this book has so much going for it and I loved it all.

I especially loved Marissa. She cracked me up and wasn't at all the damsel I thought she was going to be when we first meet her in the beginning. Scenes with her were some of my favorites and I enjoyed watching her relationship with Morgan unfold! As he said, she's a woman to be reckoned with. No damsels here!

I definitely recommend this book if you're looking for a fun adventure with plenty of action and fantastic characters! I will DEFINITELY be reading the next book in this series!

Entertaining and engaging from the very beginning, TRAITOR KNIGHT is a rare gem. Though I pride myself in reading across a wide range of genres, this one took me a bit farther afield of what I typically read. And how delighted I am that I ventured beyond my usual reading comfort zone to experience this well-told story with a witty heroine, a noble-yet-flawed hero, and a colorful set of secondary characters. And a dragon! Let's not forget the dragon!

I suppose the thing I most loved about this book is its ability to bring together in a magical way so many aspects of fiction that I love: you get plenty of humor, suspense, and romance. It's clear from the beginning that you're in the hands of a master storyteller who weaves a tale that's unlike so many of the heavily marketed books on the market. I really tire of those. TRAITOR KNIGHT is like a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be swept away to a place and time where dragons fume, damsels toss out witty barbs, and heroes have plenty of foibles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun fantasy with political intrigue and dragonish problems
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2019
I'm not usually one for more traditional fantasy tales, and I have to admit to having doubts when the book opened with a damsel in distress and a knight rushing to the rescue. However, within a few pages this trope is being so delightfully subverted that I was hooked. Plus, there was a dragon with hiccoughs. It was always going to be a win.

And the story unfolds into a story of political intrigue, a knight wrongfully accused, and a damsel who's more likely to put others in distress than be in it. Mr Willis has a deft touch with characterisation, a wonderful knack for balancing tension with humour, and - well, I did mention the hiccoughing dragon.

I'm off to get the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... novel with a medieval setting is a quick and fun read. I loved the humour and the characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 6, 2017
This lovely fantasy novel with a medieval setting is a quick and fun read. I loved the humour and the characters. Morgan McRobbie is accused to be a traitor and he finds himself entangled into a web of spies and lies. Thank goodness that Lady Marissa duBerry is his ally and friend, and maybe lover.
Also, a dragon with a hiccup.
