Autumn Lady Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Mara McClain is a young Irish immigrant looking to begin anew in Victorian-era San Francisco, after the California Gold Rush. She struggles for both love and independence, as a budding businesswoman in a male-dominated society.

Set amid the fascinating backdrop of San Francisco’s Golden Age,
Autumn Lady draws from an eclectic cast of characters, both historical and original. It’s an idiosyncratic journey through the highs and lows, ballrooms and back rooms, alleys and the promenades, and the enchantment and viciousness, of an American city on the brink of a new era.

Autumn Lady is not just the story of Mara McClain, it is the story of both a woman and a city coming of age in one of America’s most exciting historical periods.

Captivating storyteller, her words move easily, transforming into an era gone by. A historical fiction, yet accurate in discrption. San Francisco at the boom of it's city, a young Lady coming into herself in stength, business, and love. Beautiful written.

This book is so much more than a romance novel. A young woman risks everything she has to start a business in a post gold rush town about to become a great American city. She encounters a fascinating cast of characters , some will be friends for life ,some will try and destroy everything she cares about and one could become the man she will spend the rest of her life with...if he can survive the fight of his life.
My first thought after reading Autumn Lady was this should be made into a movie.
    Really enjoyed this.

A woman who longs for independence and love during the age of male dominance in Victorian-era America…

Can two drastically different dreams really become reality in a time where women are not recognized for the force they are? Is there even a man out there that can handle such a woman?

    --
“Eventually, she managed to sit up, roughly wiping away the tears. As she regained her composure, a glint of metal caught her eye. She reached down and touched the small, gold object on the floor. It was cold to the touch. The shiny key was about an inch long and felt heavy in her hand. She looked up at the wooden table, to the right of the easel. The oil on the palette looked fresh. It wasn’t like her grandmother to leave her work area without cleaning up afterwards. She shook her head from side to side wondering if she’d been painting on the day she died. If this was the case, at least she was doing what she loved most. Next to the palette was an old, leather bound book. She examined the worn material. The edges of the pages were gold leaf. There was a lock on the far right side of the cover. She hesitated for a moment. If it was a diary, perhaps she should leave it alone…”

    READ. IT.

We are first set in modern-day San Francisco. After the discovery of a diary (yussss!!), we are instantaneously transported back in time to Mara McClain. Mara is a young woman fa-a-ar ahead of her time. She’s an Irish-born immigrant whose business aspirations land her in the upcoming city of San Francisco. As Mara makes her way in this rapidly growing city, she soon realizes that life isn’t entirely gratifying if she doesn’t have anyone to share it with.

Autumn Lady is a love story in every sense of the word. From finding love in the arms of another, to learning to love herself, this is an enthralling story of self-discovery with an American backdrop.

Mara is on this epic journey, and boy, does she steal every word off the page! I didn’t care about the supporting characters. Man? What man? Mara is a BOSS, and I’m not usually drawn to heroines like this. I was so incredibly captivated by AnneMarie Dapp’s words and use of language. I could feel the materials on the pads of my fingertips. I could smell the silk.

    This book is life.

This was a quick book to read that captivated me immediately, and I read it all in one day. It starts out in present day San Francisco,, but with the discovery of a diary it changes to the story of Irish immigrant Mara McClain, newly arrived in Victorian San Francisco. She is an artist, determined to risk everything she has to open a art gallery in this melting pot city of myriad cultures and gold rush wealth.

Mara finds a room in a respectable boarding house, and there finds both friends and a jealous foe. As she establishes herself, she also finds a despicable enemy in her landlord;, threatening her dreams of a gallery and even her life. Her fellow boarder and rescuer when she arrived in town, Patrick Deane, rapidly becomes her protector and stirs her feeling beyond friendship. I did find their romance becoming too steamy too rapidly, for the time period, making this book rating a 3.5 for me, but I'm rounding it up thanks to a compelling plot.

This book was given to me by NetGalley in return a fair and honest review. Thanks NetGalley and BooksGoSocial.!

Autumn Lady is a lovely book. I was pulled into the very early days of San Francisco from the first moment Mary started reading the diary. I felt that I was was there. Mara comes to San Francisco for a new start. She is a young lady of good breeding who wants to open an art gallery. She rents a room in a boarding house run by Sarah, a widow. There are a mix of people staying there and she makes some wonderful friends.. One person is Patrick Deane, the very handsome man who is a carpenter by day and boxes by night. Patrick saved Mara from a mugger when she first arrives and there is an attraction from the beginning. This is a story that captivated me from the first. As with any story, there are mean and jealous people who try to cause trouble. This book is so descriptive that you can feel and see the fog and the steep hills. I truly enjoyed reading it. I received this book from Net Galley and BooksGoSocial for a honest review and no compensation otherwise.
