My Elusive Countess Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This book was originally published by Cerridwen Press in 2012. The current edition contains minor changes.

Garath Melbourne, sixth Marquess of Blackbourne, survived Waterloo only to discover that the life awaiting him back in England was anything but peaceful. In addition to dealing with properties left in disarray by his late father, he feels honor bound to locate the child of his friend who died at Waterloo. Garath is the boy’s guardian, and he’s determined to protect the young earl from the influences of his merchant-class mother.

Amanda may have been born into the merchant class, but her father had ensured that her education was as genteel as that of any noblewoman in the kingdom. Now a widow, Amanda is determined to protect her young son from the excesses of his father’s world. To her horror, she discovers her late husband has appointed a guardian for her son—the disreputable Marquess of Blackbourne who is obviously a danger to her plans and to her resolution to avoid entanglement with another nobleman.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

From the very first chapter of this book, I was engaged. . . . All in all it was a beautifully written Regency romance that left me smiling. Everything was tied up neatly in the end, and the writing was good enough to make me want to read more books from this author. It was a clean read with no sex, and minor language. - Rachel, Romancing the Book

Very nice clean story and some what sweet. Really good storyline idea. It was a bit wordy in place for my taste but not overly wordy. I think anyone who likes a nice interest clean story will like this book. I give it four stars because of the base storyline.

Though the story began in an odd fashion, I liked it. It began with Amanda and her five-year-old son living way back in the woods in the second, oldest dower house. This was because she didn't want her son to ever emulate her awful husband. ??? But when she and her son subsequently moved back into the manor, everything seemed fine. So I didn't get the living-in-the-woods business. Silly, added nothing to the story, just took up space.

Well, moving on.....Gareth, a marquess, was asked by his best friend as he lay dying after Waterloo, to become his son's guardian. During the course of their friendship, the rotten husband had convinced Gareth that Amanda was all kinds of horrible so Gareth hated her and was primed to fix her wagon and protect the son. Of course, Amanda, daughter of a cit, was leery of all noblemen. They met in those woods and Gareth was confused that Amanda didn't seem to be the shrew he expected and her son obviously loved her and was happy.

The story moved along. A nasty aunt caused trouble, Gareth's mother appeared, to Gareth's fury ~ she had run off and left him when he was a child. He did something stupid but so did Amanda. And she was in love with Gareth but wouldn't marry him because of the nobleman thing and she was a cit's daughter. Well lo and behold, so was Gareth's mother. So what was the big deal?

The plot was a little muddled, there was the cottage in the woods bit, and the I can't marry the son of a cit because I'm the daughter of a cit part that went on and on. As I relate all these problems, I'm thinking I shouldn't have liked the story but I did. The overall story was entertaining.

    Enjoy your reading! :)
