Review
"As a retired ER nurse I loved reading this comprehensive guide to orthopaedic problems. Simple to understand explanations with personal touches in several chapters! In a nutshell - I loved it!" edrn2010/Amazon
"I have a clearer understanding of orthopaedic conditions, their causes, symptoms, and treatments. However, this was not the only benefit. I now know how my bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles function, which is priceless. The author includes a few preventative measures, thus widening the audience. You don't have to be someone who is dealing with a particular orthopaedic problem to read this book. I recommend it to all those who would like to learn more about their bodies and how to care for it." K. Mbangi/ OnlineBook Club

About the author

Thomas Neviaser, MD is a retired orthopedic surgeon who has traded in his knife for a word processor. He has spoken and written about bone and joint conditions, extensively in his 36 years of being in the field of orthopedic surgery. Since retired, he has written an orthopedic guide for the layperson to educate them through an easy-to-read and understand guide, THE WAY I SEE IT: A Head-to-Toe Guide to Orthopaedic Conditions.
His 6th and most recent work, BONES & ME, has just been published. This is not an autobiography but a journey you will take by his side through medical school, internship and residency training, Navy experience, and private practice through re-retirement. You will become privy to the difficult years of medical school and the grueling schedules of his training. There will be many humorous stories, some disconcerting events, and some sad and humbling experiences that affected his life and the way he chose to care for his patients. Throughout, he also relates his thoughts about the changes in orthopedics as well as some unfortunate developments in medicine over the decades.
Please join him on this fast-paced sixty-year adventure. You won't find anything comparable.
His first novel published is a paranormal/fantasy novel about the advertising world and its effects on people, YOU DEAR SWEET MAN.
His newest novel, THE MYSTERY OF FLIGHT 2222 is enjoying 4-5 star reviews. Two strangers are seated together on an airplane and play a game to pass the time. The game consists of picking out 7 passengers, guessing their names, age, marital status, kids, profession, past, and personalities. Once asleep, they are awakened and informed of an impending crash into the sea. They survive with only 7 other people, those whose names are the same as they had guessed! Their ensuing adventure in a raft deals with death, sharks, weather, pirates on the high seas, and other harrowing conditions, and their effectual rescue terminates in an unexpected twist of everyone's fate.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2023Thanks to Dr. Neviaser for providing me with critical information about shoulder surgery. You have "armed" me with all the right questions for a surgeon.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2016Great book by a great man. The book is easy to read, easy to understand and very informative. My father was having neck pain. Doc told him it was a cardiac issue when everyone else thought it was a neck issue. He saved my father's life! I'm incredibly grateful to know him. The book is a must have for anyone having orthopedic issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2022I have low back and hip pain so this was very useful. Nice to get information that explains the potential reasons for the pain and questions to ask the doctor to get the best outcome.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2015Well, I found this book at just the right time. I was diagnosed with a bulging disc in my back, told to go home and rest, take some anti-inflammatory drugs and given a pain pill or two. That was about it. The doctor manipulated my legs, felt around, hit my knee and heel and said "bulging disc". I had no idea how he got to those conclusions because it wasn't really explained to me. Why are you hitting my knee when my lower back is hurting? Why are you bothering with my heal when my lower back hurts? Hello?? So as I laid in my bed searching for Christmas presents for family members I came across this book and ordered it immediately. It was here in a quick minute and I went right to reading it. I have to admit I read the first few chapters then skipped to the limbo-sacral spine chapter only to be told to go back and read the cervical spine chapter first. I did this, because I'm a good patient, and so glad I did. That chapter helped explain to me exactly what a disc is and put into words that I can understand. Actually, I'm a very visual person so when he explained the disc using a golf ball metaphor and the inner workings of that a light bulb went off. I got it!! He uses lots of visualization throughout the book to understand things more easily. Now, he still uses big words in this book but each word is spelled out phonetically and explained so plain folk can understand it. Not only that but there is a glossary at the end, too. His hints and suggestions at better back care are noteworthy and I will be doing that to avoid this pain in the future. Dr. Neviaser makes the reading of the book very easy and adds many adoring stories to entice you and keep you from getting overwhelmed by medical jargon. He gives advice on how to deal with your own doctor and, most importantly, how to be ready for your appointment to help you and your doctor have a successful examination. He encourages you to be your own advocate and to ask questions and write things down. I have since gone on to other chapters and looked into other issues I have suffered in the past and now can understand more thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to the average joe who is trying to understand medical jargon as it pertains to orthopedics and also for the patient who is wanting to go into an examination prepared and responsible for his/her own treatment. This is a book that I can return to over and over as our family runs into medical issues throughout our lives. Great job!
