Hounded by Death (Beyond Investigations Book 1) Kindle Edition
An early morning run leads to a gruesome discovery. A dead man slumped in his car, and a panicked basset hound pacing beside it.
The dead man is Detective Rod Kane. After a prickly interview with Kane's partner, Detective Blake Scott, Dakota is ready to put the disturbing event behind her.
When she sees the basset hound in the park the next morning everything changes. Coaxing the hound to her, she hears a man's voice consoling the dog. Seeing no one else around, Dakota knows it is a spirit and asks what the man needs.
Detective Rod Kane has refused this dead mother's offer to join her in the beyond. He can't. Not until he finds out who killed him.
He is startled that Dakota can hear him. Nonetheless, she is his answer. When Dakota asks, "What do you need?"
His answer is "Give JB a home and help me find my killer."

Kind of wow. Barbara Hodges creates a amazing balance between medium intensity suspense and sensitive topics in Hounded by Death.....I look forward to reading more books in what I hope is a series.
This was good fun and has a Bassett hound -what else does a book need? Was also just a good story and kept my attention. The characters were likeabl. I hope this is the first in a series because I will be waiting for the rest.

But I do like a good book

- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2018I am usually, not a big reader. But I do like a good book, when I have the time. I did enjoy reading this book, and once I started, I read until the end. Snuggled up in bed with my basset hounds (and a visiting Chihuahua). The story was not what I would have expected, but it had a lot going on, interesting characters and it held my interest until the end. Besides that, my hounds were happy to have me to read to them.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2018Kind of wow. Barbara Hodges creates a amazing balance between medium intensity suspense and sensitive topics in Hounded by Death. She also presents a really well done job for this trope. Dakota Lee can hear and speak to spirits. The spirit Dakota meets is a police detective who believes that he knows who is responsible for his murder. Dakota has to convince his partner that she is not a scam artist so the partners can still work together. The sex trade and sex trafficking are issues but while realities are mentioned, they are handled with enough distance to keep the book at the suspense rather than the side of the line. I very much appreciated that since the description of the book did not lead me to expect the horrors of either. Although Dakota is afraid to get directly involved in the investigation and neither man wants to endanger her, she has to be around so that the partners can communicate so she is drawn right into the dangers they face. I look forward to reading more books in what I hope is a series. I borrowed this book through the KU library.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2022Ghosts assist police in solving a murder of one of their own. A different kind of mystery that brings you into an alternate world of supernatural as it intertwines in the "real" world of the living. Loved this book.
