The Captain & the Queen Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

When the “thunderbolt” of love really happens and there is no denying its heat, its intensity. When life events threaten to pull loved ones apart. When the world is a smaller place than you imagine. When true love never dies.

This is the story of the “captain” and the “queen,” a coming-of-age romance set on Long Island. The passions of a daughter of a Greek tycoon and a Hispanic boy from a middle-class family are tested against all odds as they become more than just friends. The question is: how long can it possibly last?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book swept me away. I got caught up in Mateo's head, laughing with (and occasionally at) him, and I rooted for him and Calista all the way. If you want a fun romance filled with reminders of what it was like to be young, look no further."Reviewed by Jo Niederhoff, Manhattan Book Review

A noble attemptat a rapscallion tale.

A noble attemptat a rapscallion tale.
A Queen with a penchant for using the ribald language of sailors and a captain who hates her for it. (Oh wait that's my idea.) If it's Phil then it will be a heartfelt romance, so buy it in print or for you reading device today and enjoy.

I loved Mr. Vega's first book "Last Exit to Montauk" which made me want to read this book as well...and it did not disappoint. Without giving away too much, the author weaves his work together in a way that brings you into the character's world and had me smiling, laughing and captivated the entire book. Highly recommend! One of his lines had me rolling at the end, which is a movie scene in it's own right. Cannot wait for his next book, Keep 'em coming!

Phillip Vega's latest book is set in the early 1980's with a strong sense of place and well developed characters. His writing style is easy to read and enjoyable. A good read.

This was a very enjoyable book. It's about a 17 year old boy finding love and being able to handle other relationships and adversities in his life. I enjoyed the way the book ended.

But well-written and fairly compelling. If you're into this genre, I would recommend this book. Might be even worth a read even if you're not.

This takes place in the 80's where there are no computers or cell phones.
Mateo and Callie are seniors in high school, at a private school. She is a new student who catches Mateo's eye as soon as he sees her. She is Greek and he is hispanic. Her dad is a Greek tycoon and Mateo has a dad being unemployed. His family loves Callie but she is afraid to tell her dad as he expects her to marry and have kids once she is 21. It's young love and getting caught up in their lives and romance, young love.
This was so well written and I read it in 1 day. I could not put it down. And the ending was perfect!
Thank you to Edelweiss for the ARC to review.

Phillip Vega’s book The Captain & the Queen is a sentimental look back on a first love. It is set in a boarding school in New England. When Calista Cristos makes first footfall on campus out narrator is gobsmacked. We are immediately drawn into his awkward courtship. Vega captures the angst and passion of young love masterfully and walks hand in hand with his readers from young love to heartbreak and back again. The Captain & the Queen is written as a reminiscence, a man remembering fondly his first jolt of love. We know from the beginning that somehow he lost the girl and the story Vega unfurls made me laugh and cringe and feel right along with his characters. The action is slow paced with all the attention to detail that comes with first love on full display. His ending was a gift, full of hope for second chances and the power of true love. Vega has done it again, so apparently lightning does strike twice.

This is an endearing story of young love in the 80s (an era that’s close to my heart). Once more Vega delivers a love story that’s sweet, nostalgic, full of heart and most importantly, well written.
This is the story of a young man in his senior year at high school, Captain, as he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Callie (the Queen). This book took me on a journey where Vega’s descriptions of places, music and food and a time gone by drew me into the lives of his characters. After reading, Last Exit to Montauk, I was delighted to find that a few familiar characters make an appearance in this book.
Vega has a singular talent for writing from a young man’s perspective, including all the humour, angst and awkwardness that makes this story so authentic. As always, the path to true love never runs smooth but to find out what happens, you’ll have to read, The Captain and the Queen.
Highly this book to anyone who enjoys a gentle love story.
