The Spinster and the Spy: A Historical Regency Romance (The Spinsters Series Book3) (Mischief Makers) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 191 ratings

A feisty Spinster. A rakish Earl working for the Crown. An unlikely partnership for trouble.

Miss Jane Colborne is firmly on the shelf, much to the chagrin of her brother, Viscount Ridditch, who sees her independence as highly unseemly. While taking a moonlight stroll at a house party, she stumbles upon a notorious rake spying on French traitors. Afterwards, she offers her services to the Home Office to help catch an English turncoat, turning her dull, uneventful life as a spinster into one of adventure and intrigue.

Working for the Crown, Owen, Earl of Blackmore must uncover a traitor among the aristocracy. While spying on two French émigrés, he's forced to pluck the most delectable spinster out of harm's way and into the shrubbery. Now his job becomes doubly difficult, for he must keep his eyes on, but his hands off, the infuriatingly inquisitive and feisty Miss Colborne who poses an even greater threat to Blackmore, this time to his heart.

The Spinster and the Spy is a clean, sweet, Historical Regency romance with a happily ever after, no cliffhangers, and is part of The Spinster Series that can be read in any order.

As an avid reader, I became a fan of Georgette Heyer's Regency novels, then started writing Regency romance novels as a hobby. I particularly enjoy writing about strong, resourceful women in an age where it was thought that women were incapable of taking care of themselves and couldn't own property.

Kindle e-books have allowed me to grow as a writer. With each novel, I have made mistakes, but I have learned so much along the way. I like to read reviews from my readers and am thankful that they take the time to critique my work.

I am currently retired in beautiful Port Royal, SC, with my husband and our dog Sally, happily working away on my next novel.

Loved all the action, kept me reading on. As others have mentioned, there are many spelling and editing errors, but it wasn’t too distracting. Would definitely recommend.

I enjoyed the story and the two main characters. I also liked how their relationship developed. I especially liked that Jane didn’t let others control her actions. (Though, she did make some unwise choices at times.). Aunt Addie’s comments were a treat.. There were a view spelling errors missed in the Kindle version and a splint infinitive. However, my main issue is the author’s statements about Jane’s social position. Repeatedly, she writes how Jane would not be in the Earl of Blackmore’s social circle. Though she would have reached spinster status after several seasons without marrying, she was still the daughter and now sister of a viscount, which is only one rank below an Earl. They should have at least been to some of the same social functions over the past few seasons. Furthermore, her brother, the viscount, should have met Blackmore at some point - at a men’s club or various social functions, or even in the House of Lords. They are both peers, and should have met at some point, even if they weren’t close friends. I have enjoyed reading other books by Ms. Bennett, and I am disappointed that she didn’t do more research or that her editors didn’t address the statements. The story would have still worked with some adjustments.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and the characters. It is light, fun reading with likable main characters and a HEA ending, as every good romance should have.

Jane and Owen...a great love story amid much adventure of trying to find proof of a fellow countryman committing treason. I love how independent Jane is in a time when women were very often ruled by men. Owen is dashing and strong and thankfully always turns up to save Jane from trouble.
Margaret Bennett is my new favorite author... well written stories that are captivating. And the humor... in this one, cousin Addie is the best!
A great read...I highly recommend it.

Clean, but the h was behaving quite foolish, didn’t care for her character at all, no one can force you to drink sitting to a table with others if you don’t want to, and even if you do it once , it’s quite foolish to allow it a second time, and allowing yourself to be compromised with the wrong person, no to insipid for my liking, she needed a little more backbone at times , nevertheless she managed to get herself out of several situations, so that’s saying something

The character development was off and shallow. The story line was vague. No emotions in the characters. Not very descriptive.

Jane is an average looking heroine finds herself involved with the handsome and notorious rake, the Earl of Blackkmore as they try to uncover a French spy ring. Jane prides herself on her independence but is thwarted at every turn by her family and even Blackmore, who is more interested in keeping the feisty and inquisitive spinster out of trouble. But he only half succeeds, as Jane’s antics (some of them quite funny) keep landing her in trouble. I found this a fun easy read. Very enjoyable.

The characters are ones that keep you guessing what they will say or do. And there is a mystery to be solved and there is always one who adds spice to the story
