About the author

Marilyn Brokaw Hall is the author of Lights Above Cass, Mothman's Vengeance, and The Ring Master's Secret: A Tale of Witchcraft and Deception. I grew up in Southeastern, Ohio. I enjoy using Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky as backdrops for the diverse and complex characters that I love writing about in my novels. Some of my favorite authors are Charlaine Harris and Jude Deveraux and Steve Augarde, which I collect their books and re-read them over and over. I also adore King Charles Cavelier's, especially the one that sits by me while I write no matter the hour of the day.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2018Like the critically acclaimed Donald Ray Pollock, Hall’s work draws heavily on her lived experience of extreme poverty as a child and young adult living in rural Appalachian Ohio. Unlike Pollock, she addresses themes of childhood trauma, labor exploitation and poverty in a way that is suitable for younger readers in addition to adults. Although Hall paints a freightening picture she never hesitates to find the good in her often complicated characters.
This book, her first novel, fits squarely in the genre of southern gothic literature. It is an engrossing tale of disappeared children and adults that cannot be trusted. It is about fear and adventure and a longing for home.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2011I can close my eyes and see 1939 Depression era Hazard, Kentucy. Marilyn's imagery is extraordinary. I can see the poverty, feel the pain and experience the despair as the Meadows family grieves the loss of their son, Stephan. I can imagine the lore of the panther and the sinister schemes of the evil Ring Master. If you're a baby boomer and you grew up listening to stories from the old days this is a great window into the past. I recommend it. Great read!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2011If you're wanting to publish something, you want to get the best product out there. With this book, it wasn't the case. The whole thing is littered with grammatical errors and the organization of the actual story was ridiculous. It has potential, don't get me wrong. Nothing a professional editor won't fix.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019This is a really great book... I just couldn't put it down...I give it 5 stars
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2010This enchanting 1930's tale of mystery, suspense, witchraft, magic and trickery will make you laugh, make you cry, make you wonder and make you keep a closer eye on your children. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2011This book was one of the most suspenseful books I have read in a long time. I started it on a Friday night and had it finished by Sunday morning. I literally could not put it down! Definitely a 5-star read!
