Sinner: Feathers and Fire Book 5 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 2,427 ratings

If you want to get to Heaven, you’ve got to raise a little Hell…

Callie Penrose is struggling to find her special purpose in life. Rather than allying with any of the powerful supernatural groups begging to sign her up—the Vatican, the vampires, the shifters, or the Armies of both Heaven and Hell—Callie has been picking fights with all of them.

But when she’s abducted by a Host of Angels, and a Greater Demon begins hunting her through the daytime streets of Kansas City, Callie learns that her past has come back to haunt her.

Thanks to her actions in recent months, Solomon’s Temple has been opened, and the estate sale is on a first-come, first-served basis.

To win her birthright, Callie is going to need Cain’s help. Even then, she’s going to have to cut some corners, cross some lines, to take a bite out of an apple…

But they say every Saint was once a Sinner…

If you like Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Steve McHugh, Michael Anderle, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Shannon Mayer, or K.F. Breene, you won't be able to put down the highly addictive Feathers and Fire Series, or anything else in the Temple Verse.

Shayne is a man of mystery and power, whose power is exceeded only by his mystery…

He writes the Amazon Bestselling Feathers and Fire Series about a rookie spell-slinger named Callie Penrose who works for the Vatican in Kansas City. Her problem? Hell seems to know more about her past than she does.

He also writes the Amazon Bestselling Nate Temple Series, which features a foul-mouthed wizard from St. Louis. He rides a bloodthirsty unicorn, drinks with Achilles, and is pals with the Four Horsemen. Both series take place in the same universe, because it’s fun.

Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and can be found writing in a coffee shop, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso. He’s hard at work on the latest books in his shared TempleVerse, as well as a few new projects that will blow readers' mind-holes...

Sinner, Shayne Silvers’ 5th book in the Feather and Fire series, is brilliant. The characters are strong, the story line compelling, the humor is clever, and if you haven't already, you will fall in love with Callie Penrose. I will be the first to tell you Callie was not one of my favorite characters at first....period, but this latest book, pulled me emotionally because it was about finding her place and her struggle with choices.

Sinner follows Callie and her “brother” on a quest for answers that turns into a survival of trials. The action is so fast paced that it causes an emotional whiplash that takes your last breath. There are so many twists and turns that you wish you took notes to keep track of the story. Or to know what was real or not.

Shayne Silvers is an excellent storyteller whose imagination behind TempleVerse, the world of Nate Temple, Callie Penrose and Quinn MacKenna, takes you to different places, often within yourself, to experience life changing moments, not always with the characters, but with you.

I couldn’t help but think as a result of this incredible book, that we all have choices, we all have doors that we must enter, to find the truth of life and to recognize what is truly important. That choices have eternal consequences, for good or bad. That each of us face struggles with our place in the world and despite where life has taken us, we can find peace where we are today.

Sinner is not a book you want to miss. Urban fantasy yes, but the books of TempleVerse, will impact your life with lasting impressions, not to mention with great enjoyment.

These are the questions the protagonist asks herself in this chapter of Feathers & Fire.
While this chapter does have some action, the path she takes is fraught with turmoil & decision making. Hard decision making.
On this path, she learns of her origins, which is a mystery in & of itself.
This was a fun read & found myself laughing out loud on several occasions.
If you are on this path with the rest of us, Sinners, this is required reading.
    Highly Recommended!!

The sixth installment of this book can't come soon enough, because this one managed to up-end the scales again only to drag them right back to where they were with almost none of the consequences, but all the gravitas remaining as if they had. Callie Penrose has become adrift in her own life, her own soul and her own existence, and its become apparent to all those watching her that she is becoming all the more dangerous for it, moreso for her lack of direction.

This book takes some of the introspective exploration Callie has indulged in previously to rather phenomenal levels, but instead of hashing it out purely in her own brain, her exploration is dragged out in the tangible sense, as the further she explores and discovers, the more in turn she leaves of herself behind. For every question answered, a new one is asked, and everything she leaves behind awaits her ahead as she tries to put a name to herself in more than just words or thoughts. If that sounds confusing, it is, but the writing for it is structured to the extent that it makes sense with how it plays out.

Most importantly though it shows Callie Penrose has a destiny, but what she does with it and how will make it anything but destined. Her pieces are falling closer and closer into place, and for all one might consider of her position being subordinate to the longer established Nate Temple simply for running longer, her position in that world as a whole might not be so obviously defined. And time is marching on without respite for both of them.

The scale of this novel is more narrowly focused, but the magnitude of it has long standing, far reaching effects for Callie Penrose going forward. The action is still present, but in line with the themes of the story the battles have more impact symbolically than they do tangibly. And while there are still glaringly huge answers dangled like a steak just out of reach of the lions, the pacing of their unveiling versus the abruptness of the questions bearing them is still played out to meticulous precision.

Overall the book the manages to warp the status quo by breaking it entirely and then setting it right back again, which should only stand to reason with this author at this point.

Though minus one star for that downright insulting brush-over of what should have been a huge revelation realized in a single instant upon hearing of it. From a bloody Archangel no less.

This was a very interesting installment, and very different from the installments to date as Callie ventures on a quest to discover more about who she is and more importantly, her purpose in life. The final result – the ultimate test – was absolutely fascinating: an overwhelming, but ultimately empty, victory from someone who has earned vast powers or a choice to return to life, as random and challenging as it can be, but wholly intact. As usual there were a myriad of twists and turns and second guessing and again, as usual, it was absolutely worth it. The cast of characters was also brilliant: Cain, Michael (I won’t give away which one), Solomon and Richard to name just a few: all had wonderful intertwined backgrounds - Cain’s involvement in the quest in particular was very deep, unexpected and welcome as the two really experienced similar journeys and it was fantastic to again, learn more about a character that has become near and dear. In total, I feel this installment has gone a long way to setting up the next level in this adventure and as always, I highly encourage anyone to read and experience the wonderful worlds that have been created. Fantastic work again, Mr. Shayne Silvers.

Another beautiful piece of art work by an author who just always manages to surprise at every turn by pumping out more books in a year than some authors write in a lifetime. I can't risk spoilers, but I will say that, if you liked the previous Feathers and Fire books, you will love this one. Callie is in some real interesting trouble here. Unsure of where she stands in life, she stumbles into a situation that would have most people running in the opposite direction. But, she just keeps on going and eventually comes out the other end with a few answers but many, many more questions about her future. Can't wait for the next instalment! Keep up the good work Mr Silvers!

If you're just browsing for a book that might interest you and you haven't already discovered Shayne Silver's "Templeverse" (including the Phantom Queen novels with Cameron O'Connell), I highly recommend them. Go on back and start at the beginning. You won't regret it!
I am not going to give a synopsis of the book in my review. As usual it was fantastic. In "Sinner" Callie finds more depth of character and it's an emotional ride. We take the journey with her in this story as she goes through what amounts to an emotional and fundamental metamorphosis in which she becomes a more complex character. In hindsight I think this was necessary if she is to interact as a significant character within Nate's story as he has become so much more than he was both in power and complexity and for Callie and Nate's relationship to develop and for Callie to have any impact going forward she needed to step it up.
There is so much to absorb I think I'll be reading it again soon to make sure I haven't missed anything.
    Five stars again from me.

Oh. My. God! One of the best in the series so far. This one had me laughing within the first few lines, and then took me on an emotional rollercoaster, with highs and lows to satisfy the most jaded reader, and enough twists and turns to keep a chiropractor in business for years! Do yourself a favour and READ THIS BOOK! Kudos Mr Silvers, you have surpassed yourself.
