Last Call: A TempleVerse Anthology Book 1 (TempleVerse Anthologies) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 1,478 ratings

You thought you knew how crazy the TempleVerse could get? Hold my beer…

LAST CALL is a collection of three drunken novellas set in the TempleVerse, including:

  • MotherluckerCallie and Quinn’s girls’ night out in Vegas.
  • CollinsQuinn’s prequel novella to the Phantom Queen Diaries.
  • BeerlympianGunnar’s bachelor party.

Get ready for some shenanigans… You might need a drink just to comprehend the insanity.

Motherlucker—Feathers and Fire #4.5 / Phantom Queen Diaries #3.5

Coming-of-age can be an awkward time in any young person's life. Hormones flair. Hair grows in weird places. Wrestling becomes foreplay. But at no point in any would-be adult's life is the transition more obvious than the 21st birthday—an American tradition as rich as drinking to celebrate other cultures. But for some, this transcendent experience is rockier than others.

For Aria and Sonya, weredragon sisters and birthday girls, it's about to be downright turbulent.

Head out for a night out on the town with Callie Penrose, Quinn MacKenna, Othello, and the Reds as they do their best to break the "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" adage by taking on the leprechaun mafia, hitting on Johnson Beaver, avoiding were-strippers, donning Dorian Gray's clothing line, robbing a bank, and drinking everything they can get their hands on, of course. If these girls thought Lady Luck was on their side, they should have known better.

Because in Vegas, the House always wins...

Collins—Phantom Queen Diaries #0—prequel novella

Every story has a beginning, but not every story has a happy ending. When you live in Boston, you make peace with that, or you find another town. A softer, gentler town. But Quinn MacKenna—a black magic arms dealer just coming into her own—isn't a soft, gentle person, and Boston suits her just fine. Which is why, after getting caught up in the middle of a kidnapping case, she sticks around for a night of blood and mayhem guaranteed to give her new nightmares.

Walk with Quinn as she and her old friend, Jimmy Collins, reconnect, forging a new bond of friendship under fire, even as their very beliefs are put to the test. Prepare yourself for wizardry and ritual, for victims and violence. For walking corpses and cleansing fire. Prepare yourself for the worst of what Quinn's world has to offer.

Because when the things that go bump in the night come out to play, sometimes you have to bump back...

Beerlympian—Nate Temple #5.5

There comes a moment in every man’s life when he chooses to settle down with the love of his life. To put all those childish games and hobbies away to focus on building the rock-solid foundations of a true, everlasting, committed relationship—marriage.

Gunnar Randulf, the Alpha werewolf of St. Louis and Nate Temple’s best friend is ready to make that plunge. But before the wedding bells chime…

It’s bachelor party time.

Join Nate, Alucard, Achilles, and the Minotaur as they rip through New Orleans on a last-ditch effort to ruin Gunnar’s life—erm, remind him why he loves his fiancée so much—with a Stag Night scavenger hunt marathon that introduces them to ungodly amounts of alcohol, mermaids, major felonies, Nicolas Flamel, ridiculous drinking rules, Valkyries, and a slew of other local supernaturals. And you thought you knew just how crazy the boys could get when left unattended. It’s cute, really, your naivety...

Shayne Silvers and Cameron O’Connell released Last Call, an anthology of three novellas, set in the TempleVerse, to fill in some back story found in the previous books. Each novella is set at a different place on the timeline. The novellas do not contribute to the main story arc of the novels but it gives some great insight to many characters. I loved that these two authors could give their audience a few stories that were intended for enjoyment only.

The first novella, Motherlucker, was written in both Quinn MacKenna and Callie Penrose’s point of view. Silvers and O’Connell alternated chapters by writing their main character in this way. This process took meticulous planning to keep the flow of the story at a non-stop pace. Where Quinn left off, Callie picked up and this was throughout the novella. Distinct writing styles made for an interesting read. Motherlucker was a very humorous read about 5 women celebrating the “Reds” (twins in the Nate Temple story) 21st birthday with a night on the town in Las Vegas. Keeping up with the shenanigans of the women gave me whiplash! A story of friendship and fun. I never stopped laughing.

The second novella, Collins, fills in some back story of the life of Quinn Mackenna, from the Phantom Queen Diaries. In the series, there was a mention of the “Lollipop” kidnapping case and this novella gives the reader the full story of what happened. It features Quinn and a school friend, Jimmy Collins, meeting again after many years. It also gives additional insight of these two characters. It didn’t have the pace of the first novella but it was full of action and great characters, which is a trademark for the books in TempleVerse. I know Collins will play a huge role in this series so it was great to read about him and his relationship with Quinn.

The last novella, Beerlympian, was over the top hilarious. Nate and A-Team (Achilles, Asterion and Alucard) take Gunnar to New Orleans for a Bachelor party. These guys set up a stream of drinking games at various supernatural locations that gets these guys in trouble by just showing up. Another laugh by the minute story that features some of the best characters in the books. The only character that would have put it off the chart hysterical, would have been Carl, a well-loved character in the Nate Temple Chronicles. Actually stupid at times. But it was a read that will be a favorite anytime you need a laugh. Over the top fun that you will not be able to stop reading.

Shayne and Cameron have set a standard for great storytelling and amazing characters. If you have never visited TempleVerse, Last Call would be a great introduction to brilliant writing.

There were three separate stories in this book. Motherlucker - Collins - Beerympian.

I will say this, if you have not read any of Shayne Silvers or Cameron O'Connell's books, then I would suggest waiting until you do. Once you know all the main characters and what their specialties are in their books, you will be able to appreciate this book so much more.

The first story entertained you by bringing you along on a 21st coming of age birthday party for Aria and Sonya, were-dragon sisters. Now along for the fun were Callie Penrose, Quinn MacKenna and Othello! This party took place in Las Vegas and what happened in Vegas was one hilarious unexpected problem after another. The adult women chaperones should have known things would never go smoothly when the night involved liquor!!

The second story was more subdued as it involved, at least that is what the authorities thought, was a child kidnapping. Quinn MacKenna, a dark magic arms dealer, took the lead in this sometimes funny, sad, nerve racking, fast paced zombie thriller.

The third story involved a bachelor party for Gunner Randulf, the alpha of St. Louis werewolf pack. Nate Temple (a wizard), Alucard (a vampire), Archilles ( yeah I typed it correctly - him), and Asterion (an honest to goodness Minotaur) joined in the fun, or sort of. Nicolas Flamel, yup from the Harry Potter books, created all the crazy and drunken stag night scavenger hunt shenanigans the men were to encounter. This story was not stop, pee your pants laughter!!

I totally enjoyed all three stories, the first and last stories had me laughing and in tears throughout them. Another wonderful addition to the "Templeverse Empire"!

Last Call is a collection of three short novels set in the Templeverse created by Shayne Silvers and Cameron O’Connell. This is by far the funniest book of any of the three series so far – and that is saying something.

    Motherlucker – 5/5

This is the funniest of the three stories.

I didn’t realize the Reds were already ready to turn 21. It seems only a few years ago when we met them as baby dragons. Maybe dragon shifters grow up faster than regular kids (although heaven knows regular kids grow up plenty fast enough).

Anyway, here they are on their twenty-first birthday, and Othello has decided to take them out for a night on the town – the town of Las Vegas, to be exact. And they invite Quinn Mackenna and Callie Penrose to go along.

The five of them manage to drink and fight their way through the town in a night of magical mayhem unlike any other. Fortunately, they encounter mostly other freaks, the main exception being some rock star by the name of Johnson Beaver…

    Collins – 4.5/5

This is a prequel novella to Quinn Mackenna’s Phantom Queen Diaries series. In this story, Quinn reconnects with her childhood friend, Jimmy Collins, now a police officer, to solve the case of a child who has been abducted. Or at least, that’s what the police have been told.

This one involves zombies, and things get dangerous. It’s not meant to be as funny as the others, although the zombies are pretty comical.

    Beerlympian – 5/5

This is the previously untold story of Gunnar’s bachelor party.

Nate Temple, along with Alucard, Achilles, and the Minotaur take Gunnar to New Orleans. There they begin by playing a game they call Seahorse in a pool with some mermaids. That seems reasonably safe. Then they go to the Alchochemist’s where they meet Nicholas Flamel, drink a lot of a new species of beer that they name Beerlympians, and try to ride a mechanical bull. And finally they set off for a strip club, but they are too drunk to find it.

You keep thinking they are about to get themselves into some sort of serious trouble, being as it’s them…

I laughed more times than I can remember. Fun from the first page. Although, this book has several short stories, anyone that's a fan of Shayne Silver's, will enjoy this collection.

Next stop! Next book. Can't wait! Thank you Shayne and Cameron for a wonderful read.

Finally Shayne tells the "hidden" stories that have previously only been alluded to. If you need a book to lift your spirits and leave you aching from laughing out loud read the hilarious mis-adventures of the hen and bachelor parties. If only life generally was this much fun! Rounding off this trio of shorts Shayne teams up with Cameron giving us a backstory for Quinn McKenna, our own Phantom Queen. This book is one no-one wants to miss.
