- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018What happens to a world where things are valued more than people? In the midst of songs and stories about jolly old Santa comes a tale of foreboding and darkness that speaks to a materialistic and selfish world.
The story immerses the reader in an environment where “naughty” far outweighs “nice”, and where the consequences affect all of humanity. Yet still, even in the depravity and darkness, a small flicker of hope survives— perhaps just for one more night.
‘Merry Apocalypse’ is a well-crafted short story with a powerful message. We may not be experiencing the apocalypse, but its warning is relevant and timely.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2019I read when Leaves Fall, which I loved. Although I don’t feel this is on par with Leaves, I applaud the author for her originality and creativity. I love when authors take a chances and write uniquely and this story definitely fits that bill. I look forward to exploring this authors work further...
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2020'Twas the Night Before Christmas and all is not well. No one wants to be on the naughty list, but when Santa turns rouge and the smallest of things can get you on that list, then humanity is doomed.
A small group of children are hiding out in a mall, as we read about their meagre existences. They are hungry and depend on each other to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where eventually everyone will make the naughty list. But until that day arrives, it’s the job of the older children to teach the young about Christmas and spread Christmas cheer. And that isn’t the least of their horror. When the doomed have nothing left to live for, there is nothing they won’t do to have fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019I enjoyed this short story! It was hugely imaginative and very dark. I really loved the horrifying re-telling of The Night Before Christmas. Definitely not your typical Christmas story, but an engaging read nonetheless- and one with a powerful message we should all take to heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2019Overview: Author C.A. King’s telling of the traditional tale “T’was the Night Before Christmas” goes terrifyingly awry when Santa turns his anger on humankind.
“Merry Apocalypse” is a creative, unique, and terrifying look at a dystopian future where the holiday season is one of fear, horror, and death as Santa seeks revenge for the hundreds of years he’s spent providing free gifts and holiday cheer to the masses who have shown nothing but disdain and a lack of appreciation toward him and their fellow humans. The small global populations that are left in this dystopian future are forced to shutter themselves away and hide-out in fear of being exterminated as Santa cleanses the earth of everyone who makes his “Naughty List”.
King’s characters elicit great empathy as we read about their meager existences. They are forced to starve and depend on each other to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. But when incentives are presented to tempt some out of hiding and false promises are made in exchange for doing bad deeds, survival is at a premium as humankind turns on itself and all hell breaks loose.
For horror lovers, King’s spin on “T’was the Night Before Christmas” is ironic, macabre, sadistic, and delicious. I highly recommend this read for anyone who loves an edgy, turn-of-the-screw tale with plenty of dread and frights.
