4.4 out of 5 stars 73 ratings

For years, Maisy McCoubrie, a woman haunted by a past filled with betrayal and tragedy, has managed to stay out of the clutches of one Gold Kingsley. But now, dealing Faro in saloons and hiding her illegitimate son from the world—and his father—she spots Kingsley on the street and jumps onto a departing train, once more on the run.

Tasked by Kingsley with finding Maisy, The Preacher, a notorious man with a shadowy history, harbors doubts about the man’s plans for her. When The Preacher stumbles upon a seemingly lifeless saloon girl, he learns Kingsley's cruelty knows no bounds. But again, Kingsley turns the tables on his enemy and frames The Preacher for the girl’s murder.

As danger looms, The Preacher and Maisy are drawn together by a force more potent than revenge. Their shared quest to bring Kingsley to justice unites their hearts in a story of unlikely alliances turned passionate devotion.

In this western historical romance, love blossoms amidst the dust and danger of the Old West, and justice is found in the most unexpected places. Can Maisy and The Preacher win against this cruel and powerful man? Or will Kingsley dash her dreams once again?

Review

"Charlene Raddon's stories take you on the most exciting journeys where love triumphs every time." ~ Linda Broday

"Wow...what a wonderful book. I enjoy reading every book this Author writes, always an adventure waiting to take me along with the main characters. Maisy and The Preacher were both wonderful characters, it was so easy to root for them and their HEA. Dan was a character of his own and had my heart from the beginning and I was brought to tears close to end for Dan. As always, a well written storyline that entertain me to the very end" ~. JudyE

Hello and welcome to my author page. Let me tell you a little about myself, as that seems to be the main purpose of this profile. Believe it or not, I began my fiction career in the third grade when I told my class that a little sister I never had died of a black widow bite. I also wrote books through my teen years, always about a girl whose mother mistreated her by making her wash dishes, sweep the floor... you get the idea. Never finished any of those stories. But the idea of writing a real book and publishing it never occurred to me. It was a particularly vivid dream that drove me to drag out a portable typewriter and go to work on my first novel. In 1990 my second completed book, Tender Touch, brought me a first place win in a writing contest and the following year became a Golden Heart Finalist. That won me an agent and a contract from Kensington who published five of my western historical romance novels. My books have placed or won in other contests as well. Forever Mine received a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award nomination. I've always loved the Old West and I believe my novels reflect that emotion through their depth and vibrancy. I am always working on a new story. I hope you try my books and enjoy them. Follow me here on my author page and on my website at https://charleneraddon.com & get a free book.

Maisie is running from an evil man who seduced her when she was only 14, left her pregnant, and when she was going to tell him she was pregnant she found Gold Kingsley beating her father to death after telling him he would never marry her. She ran, and tried to stay hidden from him by moving from town to town all over the West dealing Faro in saloon after saloon. The Preacher is a gun for hire who is falsely accused of killing a woman. Maisie has a son who lives with Maisie's Aunt on a ranch, and Dan rarely sees his mother and is resentful of that...and the fact she won't tell him who his father is. When Gold Kingsley by chance turns up in a town where Maisie is, he sends Preacher after her. Gold wants Maisie dead so she cannot tell anyone that he killed her father. There is a lot of suspense, romance, and family tug of heart in this book, and I hope to read the next book about Dan, Maisie's son.

Ms. Raddon's book is steeped in the Old West, and her voice comes through loud and clear. Her feeling for times past is unique. She captures the soul of the Old West, the dialogue, and the people. Her primary characters are fully-fleshed and three dimensional. Her secondary characters are interesting and unique. In this book, with regard to her primary characters, she brings their feelings and human failings, along with their heroic struggle to rise above the challenges of their lives and make a new and better future for themselves. The romance is sweet and sensual, and the author's insight into raising children and the challenges therein, is spot on. This book is a culmination of the very best in western historical writing. If you love western historical romance, you will love it!

I liked this story. The author put a lot of thought into the story line. Heart warming. Kept my interest. With the exception of a couple typos - nothing distracting - I found it to be good writing. Main characters are engaging. I appreciated that the author doesn't use the usual sexually explicit content found so many times in romance novels. There is just enough without turning it into a porn scene. Thank you!

sexual content: some, but not explicit
    language: some/mild

I loved the story and how it flowed. Brose and Maisy's relationship was wonderful with all the ups and downs.
The only thing I have against Maisy is that she was to open for someone running and hiding for their lives. She was a strong woman, but should have been more scared of that King man and not been out working in cities where he could find her so easily.  Women were tougher back then, but she was alittle to non chalant about it. I like all the twist that went through the book, it kept you turning the pages. I highly recommend this exciting book!
I was given this story to read as a beta reader, but loved it so much I had to buy it!

This is a little crazy but very much filed for the with hope and love. It is by no other words, but great! Missy is a woman with a teen age illegitimate son, Dan. He live with his aunt on a small ranch while his mother works as a Fairo dealer in different saloons. She is trying to say one step away from an evil man wanting to kill her. She meets Brose, known as a fast gun to hire, as she deals cards in a saloon. It doesn't take long for them to find all sorts of trouble as they fall in love. You will fall in love with tale as I have. I look forward to Dan's book.

Brose and Maisy both faced impossible situations that forced them to turn "bad" in the eyes of the world. As they fall in love, they learn to accept the good in each other and in themselves. Maisy's son Dan adds a humorous, touching element as Brose helps the boy learn how to be a man. The 3 of them struggle to outwit Gold KIngsley and earn their right to live and grown in happiness together. The story was uplifting and exciting all the way. I loved it!

A wonderful story about Maisey who is a Faro dealer in saloons part of the year. She travels around and never stays in one place long as someone is trying to find her to kill her. Broke is a gunslinger and also travels around. He has been sought after to find Maisey by the man who wants to kill her. Maisey ends up saving Broses life and he decides he can't turns her in. Another murder and Brose being accused of it only serves to find Brose trying to find Maisey to keep her safe. Lots more twists and turns but ends up with a romantic ending.

I really enjoyed this story. It had a little of everything - humour, love, loyalty, rage, fear, vindictiveness and pathos. The wicked were wicked and the good were definitely not perfect.
