4.2 out of 5 stars 1,599 ratings

Aspen Falls Colorado police detective, Chase Waters, is working the most interesting and difficult case of his career.

Interesting because mutilated bodies of young men and women are appearing regularly in and around his small mountain college town. Difficult because the victims are all Hispanic and that part of town tends to guard its secrets.

What he doesn't know is that everything is about to get a lot more personal.

"A compelling, complex and emotionally connected story." — L.J. Sellers, author of the bestselling Detective Jackson series

"A top-velocity cliff-hanger, and a thriller with heart. Brantley is the real thing." — Timothy Hallinan, Edgar-nominated author of the Poke Rafferty and Junior Bender series

I'm new to the world of e-books (through my Christmas present Kindle) and would never have discovered the truly wonderful world of indie authors if not for that most thoughtful and welcome gift. Thanks to Kate for that and thanks to Amazon for offering great books...occasionally for free and to BookBub for providing a relatively easy, painless method to bring them to ones attention. If not for those two things, I would never have heard of Peg Brantley nor would I have read "the MISSING", and that would have been a darn shame!!!! To be perfectly honest, I would never have read this book if not for what I've just written, because it is not one of the genres I typically read, although I do really enjoy TV shows and movies along the same lines. I'm new, as well, to writing reviews, this being only my second or third attempt at it, so please bear with me.

This is simply a fantastic book...PERIOD! The author has created a compelling, exciting and thought provoking crime story that I would gladly pay good money to see if it was ever turned into a movie. The story moves along nicely, non-stop, without the "Dead Zone" lulls that sometimes detract the reader while back stories are revealed or "science" explained. The author has seamlessly integrated these things into her story in a way to enhance main story line, rather than detract from it. While it is not what I would call a page turner...meaning a book you read in one sitting because you simply can't put it down, I will confess I did read the last 50% of it in one sitting because I really couldn't put it down! The author has done a superb job of getting to you care about the people in her story. I'm not a bit ashamed to admit that during the last few chapters I found myself torn between tearing up and pumping my fist in the air with a loud YEAH! on my lips. If the author ever writes another novel in this world she created, I will buy it, because I already miss these people.

Finally, as someone who has read dozens of novels by indie authors in the past few months, I am happy to report this one is DEFINITELY not flawed in the way many other good (and some not so good) indie offerings are. I'm talking about editing! I don't recall a single typo, run on sentence, or anything that made me scratch my head in confusion saying HUH????? Kudos to everyone involved in proofing and editing this story! For me, nothing is worse than being rudely slapped back into reality from a really good story by things any good proof-reader and/or editor worth a grain of salt should have dealt with!

Bottom Line: Get this book...you'll enjoy it, even if crime drama is not your thing. As for me, I'm going to buy Peg Brantley's first novel, Red Tide.

As I wrote in my review of Ms. Brantley's previous book, RED TIDE, I was not particularly impressed with the 3 Star reviews (which is what I normally read) to interest me into reading THE MISSINGS. That all changed when I read a preview excerpt at the end of RED TIDE. I am glad I read THE MISSINGS. To me, both books were equally interesting. Both had scenarios that could happen. In fact, I am sure the illegal organ harvesting, which is the topic of THE MISSINGS, actually does happen with alarming frequency.

Again, both the writing and editing are exceptional. The topic of using 'illegals' as a source of this horrific harvesting was well drawn out. The author shows so many facets of human nature in presenting this topic. This includes the detectives' feelings towards illegals, the foreign community's distrust of law enforcement, the overwhelming feeling of losing a loved one to the lack of legally available organ donations and the extreme greed needed to take advantage of people at their most vulnerable. If this story does nothing else, it brings to light just how important voluntary organ donation is.

There are some sub storylines that I felt were not truly essential to the plot, including Detective Waters wife's past and the whole Judge Atkins ordeal; Detective Johnson's attempts to adopt a child. These could easily have been omitted and it would not have affected the storyline.

I would recommend this book to all interested in 'Medical Mystery' plots. I feel the writing is equal to that of Robin Cook. Ms. Brantley has become another author which I have added to my "favorites" list and look forward to reading more of her work.

Peg Brantley's THE MISSINGS is a solid thriller with a lot of heart. A police procedural at its core, Brantley's second novel takes a look at organ harvesting in a small town in the Colorado Rockies.

Chase Waters is a police detective in the bucolic town of Aspen Falls. When bodies turn up eviscerated, organs gone, Chase and the other two detectives in the department, Terri and Daniel, aren't sure what to make of the killings, initially thinking they might be ritualistic cult killings. More ominous, all the victims are Hispanic. Clues quickly lead the investigative team to suspect organ harvesting as the reason behind the slayings, and dogged police work eventually leads to answers.

Brantley handles the polemics of race without ever getting preachy, and has a deft hand when it comes to character. She's populated her book with a sympathetic, full-blooded cast, coloring the lives of the key players with detailed back stories. Chase and his wife Bond have lost their eldest child to a rare genetic condition, which ends up having a direct bearing on the case. Bond has her own secrets, which play out as the book goes along. And other characters have their own issues to deal with in addition to the grisly murders they're trying to stop.

This is an ambitious novel. In fact, my only major complaint is that it may be too ambitious. Brantley introduces so many subplots involving her various characters readers may need a flow chart to keep them straight. At times I found this to be distracting. All of these characters' stories are well-told, but they tend to slow the action, and aren't always relevant to the main plot. Worse, their stories are ultimately trivialized by a short, almost brusque denouement that ties neat bows on each in a matter of a few lines or a paragraph at most.

My only minor nit with the book is that at times the amateurs in the novel know more about what's going on than the professionals, making the cops look, yes, amateurish.

However, overall, Brantley writes with conviction and style that only occasionally gets in its own way (there are a few spots where readers might be able to tell how much Brantley loved how a certain passage sounded), and she tells a good story, ratcheting up the tension as the hunt for the killer(s) reaches its conclusion.

THE MISSINGS is a thoroughly enjoyable read and Peg Brantley is a writer to watch. Expect good things from her in the future.
