"This book presents an engaging twist on a post-apocalyptic world."– Publisher's Weekly Booklife Prize

A finalist in the 2020 Author Elite Best in Sci-Fi Contest.

In the bowels of the giant walking city of Manhatsten, Mimi survives, homeless, and unique as the only telepath in what’s left of humanity. Mimi has isolated herself for centuries, watching the few friends and lovers she let close die, as she endures.

Then, after decades alone with her gift, something interrupts her telepathy. She realizes she might not be alone after all. Mimi soon discovers a secret that has remained hidden since the walking cities took their first steps a thousand years ago. A secret that could cost her life, or worse.

Will she survive, or will the city ultimately recycle her?

Review

This book presents an engaging twist on a post-apocalyptic world... The novel offers an authentic representation of the lives of the homeless; a thoughtful look at the horrors of advanced technology; and a fresh take on psychic beings fighting for the world's welfare. Protagonist Mimi is so human and sympathetic that the reader will feel immediately invested in her substantial evolution. - Publishers Weekly Booklife Prize Annual Fiction Contest

This book blew me away. The world building is amazing and the story is superb. Character development was peerless. This is a wonderful first book in this excellent series.

One of my tests of a good book is that I later think of the characters and wonder what they’re doing in the middle of their day — the same day that I’m going through. I’ve often thought of Mimi and her friends and wondered where they are now and what they’re doing. Test passed!

This was good.. up to the end.
Halfway through, on a new to me writer, I did notice that it was entertaining and held my interest.
The ending is that of a series such that this is just one installment. This is not a complete book, just one in the series where each will follow on the heels of the last.

The world that Kilman created was so well crafted. His background as an anthropologist really shines through in the world of Manhatsen. This is a perfect intro to the series. I am not a fast reader, but I read this book in 2 days!

Wow! I was unsure of the premise when I started reading this, but it only took me a few pages to be totally hooked! I love the prose. The character Mimi is complex and interesting, and this whole world feels so unique. I’ve cried, and laughed, and chewed on my nails. When we got to the part that explained the title, goosebumps ran up and down my back. For some reason I don’t often recommend books out among my RL friends and workmates, but today I’ve recommended this to 3 people. I am so happy that the next book isn’t far.

I had my doubts in after the first chapter. There were so many questions I wanted answered. Normally, unanswered questions eventually make me put a book down, but the main character carried me through. When I reached the end, I was shocked that this was the last page, not because the story lacked a good ending, or that some of my questions were still unanswered, but that the book seemed so short. I realize now that time does fly when you are having fun. I'm also glad that not all the questions were answered. It gives me hope that there is a book two, maybe even a book three. If so, I want them.
This was very well edited. Kilman has a clean, no-filler-added style I like. Every chapter and every paragraph makes some important point. There were no slow spots for me.

I quite enjoyed this story - I found Mimi hard to relate to and couldn't picture her, which was a shame as she was the main character but very much liked Shannon who I felt was a more interesting character. The idea of Runners is excellent and scary! The premise is good but Michael Kilman may need to check with his copyeditor about spelling errors (in the first couple of pages). I look forward to reading the next instalment.

I have never been much of a science fiction reader but the way the author writes captured my interest from the start. I am so grateful to have the next two books in the series and I hear the 4th book is going to be spectacular.. Cannot wait to meet all the characters and will be starting book 2 straight away.
