WHEN THE OCEANS RISE...THE TRUTH DROWNS
It's the year 2031. Our future. Their present. A world decimated by climate catastrophe, where the sun's heat is deadly and the ocean rises higher every day. A world ruled by the rich, powerful, and corrupt. A world where a good man can’t survive for long. Hogan Duran was a good man once. He was a cop, forced to resign in disgrace when he couldn't save his partner from a bullet. Now Hogan lives on the fraying edges of society, serving cruel masters and scavenging trash dumps just to survive. But after four years of living in poverty, Hogan finally gets a chance to get back on his feet. He's invited to join the National Security Council, the powerful paramilitary organization responsible for protecting the rich and powerful from the more unsavory elements of society. All he needs to do is pass their deadly entrance exam, and he'll be rewarded with wealth and opportunity beyond his wildest dreams. But this ex-cop's path to redemption won't be easy. The NSC are hiding something, and as Hogan descends deeper and deeper into their world, he starts to uncover the terrible truth of how the powerful in this new world maintain their power...and just how far they will go to protect their secrets. Review

Kill Code is well paced with plenty of plot twists and double crosses. Characters are portrayed in a realistic and relatable way. The story is a fun, fast-paced read and even hints at romance (if you're into that sort of thing). The cover art is ominous and really sets the tone for a thrilling read. This book is a major win for Clive Fleury! You can tell that the author has passion for many of the social issues pertaining to our day. Can't wait to see what comes next! - Nicky Flowers, Indies Today

A fast-paced Action story that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
What I Loved: This book took me on so many twisty turns, I was just in awe! I really loved the way the author created this world and pulled me right in. I was right there with Hogan as he tried to make it into the NSC organization! How I Felt: I’m giving this book a 5 star because it was great! The story, character building, and surprises were wonderful. There is a little character building for a friend of the main character who probably doesn’t seem to be needed in the story, but it is fairly brief and may be a set up for book 2. The first 20% of the book is building out the world, showing us how the common people are living. We gain some background on Hogan, the main character, as well as the overall culture of the civilization now. From there, the book takes off on this crazy story that is so fast-paced and well told! To Read or Not To Read: I highly recommend this book for readers that enjoy action and post-apocalyptic stories! What’s This Book About Anyway? In 2031, the world is a different place. The oceans are rising, the wealthy are extremely wealthy and well off, while the other 99% live in poverty, struggling to find work, food, and lodging from day-to-day. Hogan is an ex-officer of the police force. He spends his days applying for a position with the NSC, where he would be set for life. Then, the acceptance letter comes, and he’s in! He boards transportation and heads to the NSC base for a rigorous competition to be the ONE candidate that makes it into the NSC. Can he do it? As he fights to make it to the top of this group, he starts to realize that the NSC may not be exactly what he had dreamed it would be. I received a copy of this advanced reader’s copy for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

In the year 2031, catastrophic climate change has occurred and the majority of the Earth's population find themselves struggling to earn a living, scavenging for food and oppressed by the rich elite class.

The elite class has found that a world that is steeped in starvation is easier to control.

Hogan Duran is one of countless citizens who struggles to secure a daily job and scrounging through the garbage heap in order to supplement what little income is coming into the household. Once a respected officer of the law, Duran, who was unable to protect his partner, was drummed out of the police force and living with his former handicapped partner and personal regrets.

He, however, through all of his difficulties has maintained his integrity and decency.

His only hope, for the last four years, has been to utilize his military and police skills within the National Security Counsel. The NSC is an elite special forces that was formed to protect the rich and powerful and entrance into this force is contingent upon passing a series of potential deadly entrance exams.

The day comes when the recruitment invitation is extended to Duran, but there maybe more to the NSC than meets the eye. Added to the mix is a rebel group known as the Krails.

Kill Code: A Dystopian Science Fiction Novel by Clive Fluery is an exciting and vividly penned futuristic novel that will engage the reader on every page. The plot is well thought out and is replete with twists, turns and surprises. This adventuresome and exciting read will most certainly grab the person's imagination and take the reader on a futuristic and stimulating ride of maintaining one's freedom at all costs.

In Kill Code by Clive Fleury, the author presents us with a dystopian world where climate change has wreaked havoc on coastal cities and on the economy. The rich and privileged live away from the poor who eke a living from combing the dumps containing the waste of the rich. Unemployment is assessed at 80% among the poor; a job means life - losing a job almost certainly means loss of life. Amidst the social upheaval, the rich are protected by an elite paramilitary corps called the NSC, and rebels called Krails are organized in their own locations.
The protagonist in the story is Hogan Duran (who narrates). Duran was first in the army, then became a cop who resigned because he was considered irresponsible for getting his colleague, Max, permanently ‘wheelchaired”. He has taken responsibility for Max who lives with him. Duran is a conscientious guy disturbed by the injustices around him.
He is offered a potential job with the elite NSC if he could win a grueling process of competition with other candidates. There are other very important characters in the process: Captain Beecham and General Stoker of the NSC; Ruby a resolute woman who was in Duran’s army corps but after him; and Jake, whose survival instincts extend outside the rules. Ultimately, Jake wins. They are being escorted back to base (and to death perhaps), when they are attacked by the Krails. Their army experiences kick in, and Duran and Ruby manage to escape the Krails; protect the base and rescue the General in a negotiation with the Krails. This earns hm the General’s favor.
Duran, however, is disillusioned when he discovers secrets of wealth and power enjoyed by both the NSC and the Krails. In the end he and Ruby must determine which side they are on.
This is an entertaining book, well written and with twists and turns that forced this reader to hold his breath on many occasions. The plot was intriguing, and the characters are well drawn. The themes are many and well woven, among them: climate change; dystopia; injustice; survival; life threatening competition; individual grit and conscience. In the end, I felt as if I had been buffeted around by the twists and turns of the story and having to shake that out of my head and face what promises to be a smooth transition to the next in the series.
The big takeaway from the story is a question: Given the societal and economic divisions we now face, is this dystopian state a possibility for our planet as our climate change relentlessly charges on?

I enjoyed the story. It's fast paced and engaging. Fairly short and easy read. Interesting characters and intriguing world. While this book gives us a complete story it leaves a lot of room for more, both prequels and sequels. It's a good start to a potentially great series. I'm left hungry for additional character development, world building, and plot construct but not in a bad way. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Mad Max and/or Divergent.

If you love dystopian novels that seem to be on the brink of our civilization then this one is probably going to be for you. The book is based around climate change and all of the problems that it brings to the world. Since things aren’t flourishing as they once were, starvation is definitely used to keep people in check, so the novel can definitely be seen as warning to anyone who doesn’t see what is currently going on. That being said, the author did a fantastic job of creating a believable world that will definitely send shivers down your spine. The story line is fast moving and engaging, which will allow you to quickly move through it without missing a beat. The main character is complex and interesting to follow as well, which makes me wish the book was a series.

The story is set in 2031 when the world is overcome with climate change and unemployment is at an all time high. The rich are the elite and separated from the poor. The poor teeter on the very edge of survival mostly surviving by scavenging the trash of the rich. Hogan Duran was a military man turned cop who ended up resigning when his partner ends up in a wheelchair and he blames himself for not being able to protect him. Hogan now takes care of his wheelchair bound partner and makes a living by working for bad people and digging through dumpsters. When Hogan is offered a promising position with the NSC he finds himself on a deadly quest finding out exactly what the NSC is trying to hide and why. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, Fast Paced Dystopian Novel. Like "Maze Runner" and "The Hunger Games"? Give this a read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2019
In a world hit hard by climate change, ex-cop Hogan Duran is haunted by a past failure that put his fellow cop in a wheel chair. When an opportunity of a lifetime comes his way, Hogan is able to participate in the ruthless trials of the established National Security Council (NSC), that holds society together from total collapse and protects the public from a criminal organisation called "Krails".

Finally, a novel with a snapshot of a world not too far from now with likely grounding derived from the changes that the current climate issue may bring. Because of this I felt the world building was successfully grounded in realism. Fast paced and action packed, with surprising revelations that will make you consider the parallels between modern day society.

I found this book to be an easy read for young adults but I think all ages will enjoy this novel. If you have enjoyed books like "Maze Runner" I believe this will be another entertaining read!
