…it was like reading a modern Jane Austen novel.
“A ghost story where secrets hide the dead remain” Love, love and more love! Is Remember to Love Me by @beckywrightauthor a modern love story, a ghostly love story, a love story with a ghostly past or perhaps a bit of each? Would one who has left this world long ago be waiting for the right time to return? Is there a love that strong? Are there second chances? April is thrust into the past through visions, dreams, photos and an old diary attempting to piece together the family history, lay bare secrets and hopefully find a way for old family ghosts to finally rest. I was completely drawn into this story within mere chapters. All of the characters are fleshed out…even the ghosts seem so real. When I first met Annabelle and Emily, I felt a shiver. When I met…never mind. I knew. I just knew. This merging of the past and present through a diary, letters, photos, dreams and “chance meetings” is seamless; creating a beautiful love story of second chances. Second chances? Oh, yes, they are very real. Even though I guessed the ending it was heart melting and breathtakingly beautiful…It was like reading a modern Jane Austen novel. I cannot give higher praise. A Heart Melting ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read Remember to Love Me, by Becky Wright, over the holidays. It was an enchanting time to read this gothic style, heartbreaking and heartwarming ghost story, as many of the scenes take place over Christmas time, both those in the present and those in the past. Yes, there is spirit level time travel in this book. Each chapter lets you know what time period you are in, so it is easy to follow. Your senses will be stirred, with Ms. Wright’s signature ability to conjure the eerie, and also with comforting notes of nostalgia, ones that will resonate with your own past. Your heart will ache for this family’s losses and tragedies, a past betrayal revealed but understood and deep feelings of both guilt and love.

This story is about love; it covers all the kinds of love we can know, the kinds of love that for this family lasts for generations. There is the love between siblings, of parents for their children, a grandmother’s powerful and loving influence and of course, romantic love; passionate and then also real and enduring. There is so much loss and yet there is a richness in this family’s ability to live deeply as well. This is a different kind of ghost story, as all the “ghosts” are characters you know and come to care about over four generations. Their spiritual connection vibrates throughout the story and carries you to unexpected places and realizations…but then always back to love. And it spans time and keeps on reoccurring. In fact, it almost feels like a ghostly kind of reincarnation, one that can possibly even pass into the corporeal world.

I came to care about April, our young protagonist of the present, and what she uncovers in the diary of her ancestor. She has a close relationship with her aging grandmother, Nan, who guides her through her discovery of her family’s secrets and her own new found sixth sense and paranormal abilities. Nan is endearing. I ached for Annabelle and her sister Emily and what transpires between them. And I adored Richard. Such an attractive man. How the characters time travel is unique and the ending lovely and satisfying. You do not have to read it at Christmas time to be swept away into this ghostly family saga.

A brilliant debut novel full of romance and heartbreak, that pulls tight on your heartstrings and ensnares you with magical prose and lyrical beauty.

Fantasy might be my most read genre, but historical time slips/time travels/parallel tales are second to it. I love fiction that weaves narratives through two or three different time periods, seeing the connection of various lives, seeing recurring themes and settings. And that is what I loved most about this truly enchanting read.

In the present day (1997) April is a young girl who is still searching for her purpose in life. When she and her family move near her grandmother, she discovers a family secret and pieces together the lives of her ancestors, all the while coming to understand her role within it.

Annabelle and Emily are two sisters living at the turn of the century, learning to love and coping with love. They face hardships, and their bond is challenged at each obstacle that meets them.

Both these narratives come together in spectacular fashion and it was hard to keep a dry eye throughout the story's development. Becky Wright gives and takes, sometimes too much for one's heart, but her characters are so strong and when they interact with one another and come together to support each other, they reawaken hope to ease the soul.

Reminded me of Susanna Kearsley in the best of ways, this novel is not one that you want to miss out on if you love historical romances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful, emotive storytelling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 9, 2023
"Love does not ask for permission...."

From the poignant opening prologue, what masterfully unfolds is an intense, raw, and at times savagely emotive story dealing with the conflict between loss and finding, grief and comforting certainty, but above all, love shared between families a century apart. Part time-slip, shared memory, and reincarnation of beautifully crafted characters, all with their flaws and hardships, what we experience is a novel that sensitively and richly illustrates communal experience in the face of loss and the coming to terms that follows in order for the past and present protagonists to find comfort, resolution and peace.

There are moments of such joy and sadness that will affect you long after the final, expertly crafted denouement comes to a satisfying conclusion. The audiobook, powerfully narrated and skillfully performed by Joanna Swan adds a layer of immersion, bringing the characters to life, including those whose time on earth has long passed.

Highly recommended for those looking for more answers between chapters, cleverly unfurled at a pace that satisfies curiosity and keeps pages turning. Genuinely sad (but happy!) when the words come to an end, the author's other Gothic works are a great next read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story that just makes you feel good

What a pleasure to read this lovely story. A story of love, heartbreak and hope. The slightly supernatural feel grasped that part of me that loves the paranormal and the sentimental elements tugged my heartstrings. This is a story that makes you wonder "what if?" What if it was actually true? I wanted it to be true. The characters were sweet, lovely and believable in their time period, they were instantly likeable and I wanted to know them. There is nothing about this book that is anything other than sweet and soothing to the soul. When I finished I just felt good in my heart and completely satisfied

    I absolutely loved this book!
As the story started unravelling, I literally got lost and enthralled in the characters, April and her Grandmother especially. The love and loyalty between sisters and family I can completely relate to. I smiled, I laughed, I sighed in blissful content, and I perched on the edge of my seat, chewing my nails. I got choked up with a lump in my throat, and I cried my eyes out. It takes an exceptional book to create such emotions, and I adored every word!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Remember to Love Me is so different to my first read by ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 26, 2017
Twice now has Wright introduced me to a genre I'm unfamiliar with, and twice now has she won me over! Remember to Love Me is so different to my first read by her - The Manningtree Account - but I think 'enchanting' describes this one pretty well!

There's a strong theme of family in this story, and it was one of my personal highlights. Not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous! The family in this - across both time periods - is incredibly close and the love remains strong throughout, even when tragedy hits again and again. It will make you ache for your own siblings and grandparents in a way I've experienced with no other book.

Loss is another strong theme, and informs especially Annabelle's story. Over the course of this book April comes to terms with her grandmother's mortality, while Annabelle's chapters cover more difficult variations. I don't want to say to much, but this family has suffered a lot, and once again it was heart-warming to see how it brought them closer together and how they coped despite the pain.

The plot develops at its own pace without taking too long. New developments happen just as we got used to the last ones. Because the plot doesn't rush but develops as it needs to it's a relaxed read.

My favourite part in the entire book was a conversation between Annabelle and her aunt, Anna, near the middle. It was incredibly touching and for me it was the best-written part.

I read this book in April but it could easily be your next Christmas read. Christmas plays such a big part in this story and is the favourite holiday of several characters. I would quite happily have read this by the window while it's snowing outside, with a steaming cup of hot chocolate in my hands and a blanket wrapped around me!

I'm curious about the sequel because to me it read like the story had concluded. It ended in a lovely place, and I'm intrigued to see where Wright will take it from there.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 8, 2023
In many ways I liked this story, even though it was a little over sentimental for me. However, I did wonder at first if it had been translated into English as some words were in the wrong order and there were certain strange phrases, e.g. 'hollow hole' and 'she digested the blue ink'.
The plot of Remember to Love Me involves ghosts and reincarnations and these subjects alone have always entrigued me. I think it's a lovely idea that our souls return to earth and we stay with the ones we love.
I can recommend this novel for those who enjoy reading about the supernatural and I'm happy to give three stars.
