- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019Aiden the Soccer Star by Suzan Johnson is the story of a boy overcoming obstacles to achieve his dream of becoming a soccer star. There are so many things to like about this book! It delivers a strong message of conquering defeat and gaining mastery over our goals with support from family and friends. What an incredible lesson for children and adults!
The story begins with Aiden having a tough day at soccer practice after the coach benches him for the game. Now Aiden is forced to watch the other team members enjoying the game and celebrating their victory. At home, his father quickly notices Aiden is unhappy and gives him great advice on the rules of good sportsmanship. The story continues in this fashion for a few more games with his family teaching Aiden about resiliency and encouraging him to stick with the soccer team for the season.
Obviously, the young Aiden is frustrated, but he continues to follow his father’s sound advice on good sportsmanship. Then one day the goalie is sick, and the coach asks Aiden to fill in for the goalie. See all the time Aiden spent on the bench he was studying the players’ moves especially the goalie’s strategies. As a result, Aiden blocked the other team’s ball with his arms and body every time scoring a big win for his team. I got this book for my grandson who plays soccer and he loved it!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2021This is a wonderful book about a boy named Aiden who loves the game of soccer. After trying his hardest he is determined to be a starter in the game. After much disappointment, he is not able to start in the field position he wants. However, he does get the opportunity to be a goalie, a position he never thought about or wanted to play before. As it turns out he is an awesome goalie.
I throughly enjoyed this book. It teaches children so many important life lessons about perseverance, hard work, and not giving up when things don’t go exactly our way.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021Ms Johnson is a great teacher and author. This book was so relatable to my boy who plays soccer. In fact, it made him enjoy being goalie when needed in the games. Love the pictures too. -KB
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2017For the last 13 years my family has lived the same life as Aiden's Family; Saturday mornings are about soccer. Also, I have coached the sport for over 20 years and sometimes players don’t give play on competitive teams So, this is a good book for players who play club soccer, squads where the player has to try out. That being said, to get on the field a player should tell the coach, "I’ll play any position." Just like the players I have coached and Aiden, the players will surprise themselves when they switch positions.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2020A perfect children's book for soccer players. Aiden just needed a chance to shine and when he got a chance, he took it! The new opportunity gave him confidence and self esteem. All kids who play sports will be able to relate to this wonderful story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016The author struck perfectly the balance between excitement of the children who got to play and disappointment of Aiden, the main character, as he waited for a chance to play. She was able to reflect the reality of the world in which the children of that age live so young readers will identify with the story very easily.. Further she ended on the 'feel good' positive note that makes children's books enjoyable. Well Done!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2016My son was excited when he received the book and got started reading it right away. The book had great illustrations and was well written. He read the entire book the same day and was able to explain the story back to me when I asked questions. He also explained the main idea and moral of the story. The book is a great read and I recommend this book!!!
