Unbeknownst to loved ones, a headstrong young wife is snatched off the prairie by two Comanche braves, carried north of the Red River, and traded to their war chief for ponies. After five years, a small detail of Texas Rangers rides into camp, and she determines that day will bring freedom or death. She’ll remain captive no more. Sassy Nightengale almost gives up hope until a company of Texas Rangers rides into Bold Eagle’s peace camp. She learns they’ve come for the negotiated exchange of stolen white women, except her name isn’t on their list. Purposing in her heart to escape captivity with her blue eyed, four- year-old that day, she does everything she can to be noticed.

Famed Texas Ranger Levi Baylor spots the red headed beauty and agrees to the war chief’s price adding his personal horse and weapon to the Republic agents’ offerings. The trade propels the couple on a trail of joy and sorrow. Sweet love blossoms but must be denied. His integrity and her faith in God keep them at arm’s length, not allowing even a kiss. Sassy’s still married to her son’s father, and Levi’s honor-bound to deliver her home—to her husband. Can their forbidden love be made holy? God hates divorce. Is it wrong to hope, expect Nightengale to relinquish his wife and son? Will Sassy and Levi find the redemption they seek for their troubled souls?

Caryl McAdoo, praying her story gives God glory, loves writing about all Christian genres--historical and contemporary romance, Biblical fiction, mystery, and children, middle-grade, and young adults. In March 2014, after ten years published and nine titles from regional presses, Simon and Schuster debuted Caryl's VOW UNBROKEN, her first historical Christian romance set in 1832 in her new hometown of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in the far Northeast corner of Texas.

Later that year, the prolific author followed with three additional titles independently, LADY LUCK'S A LOSER, contemporary romance, HEARTS STOLEN, book two of her historical Texas Romance Family Saga series set in 1839-1844, an Amazon #1 Best-seller, and A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS, volume one of her first Biblical fiction series, The Generations, also an Amazon #1 Best-seller.

In an exciting 2015--with God's help--she independently released eleven new releases! Adventure danger and love. What wonderful story I love this author.. hope to read more of her books a great author
  • Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2017
5 years after 'Sassy' Rose is carried off by the Comanche, Texas Rangers -- including her childhood neighbor, Levi -- arrive to negotiate the return of white captives; in the process of escorting Rose home, Levi falls in love with her and her son Charley, which makes things wonderful but complicated.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 3.5 -- Plot mixes the overly convenient with unique elements, and has a slight lack of focus. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. Some creative elements to this romance, but some of it felt a bit improbable as well, and not wholly resolved. Partially that comes from being the second book in what is apparently something of a family epic. There were quite a few references to events and characters from book 1 (which I have not read), and the ending rather awkwardly returns more to the previous story, rather than the current storylines, which are not well wrapped up. Rose and Levi's story ended rather suddenly and was slightly anticlimactic, and we get no answers at all for Wallace and Laura. Lots of travel and movement in place and time, which was just a tad challenging to follow.

Characters: 3.75 -- Main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and dynamic. Some minor characters have depth, while others may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. Relationships between characters are not especially well developed, but what is there is generally good. This book essentially has 5 main characters: not just Sassy/Rose and Levi, but also Charley, Wallace, and Laura. All 5 of these are interesting characters, and they all undergo some serious emotional journeys along with their physical trials and travels. There's some good depth for all of 5, even Charley, to a lesser extent -- he is just 4 after all. Other characters that come and go in the book are much simpler. I didn't necessarily understand all of the relationships, and some of the romantic relationships were a bit confusing, but there are clearly strong friendships and lots of protective love going around.

Mechanics and Writing: 2.75 -- Frequent typos, punctuation issues, and word errors. (>30/100 pgs) Some of the errors are mildly confusing. Generally solid use of POV. Average writing, with strong parts and parts that struggle. Errors include: compound word and/or homophone confusion, slightly confusing punctuation or formatting issues (such as a failure to set thoughts, prayers, and memories of other people's words apart with italics). Also, commas are important! There is often a big difference in meaning when a comma is missing. For example, "Duck ladies" and, "Duck, ladies" are not the same. There's a problem with inconsistent indents in this book, too, and sometimes an unneeded space before a comma or period. POV is probably mostly Rose and Levi, but there are plenty of sections of Laura, Charley, and Wallace, too, and a few from a Comanche perspective. There's a lot of what you might call country grammar, especially from Laura. I've not counted those as errors for the most part, though some (notably 'of' instead of 'have' in phrases like 'should have') really rubbed me wrong.

Redeeming Value: 4 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, though there is some shaky ground. No explicit sex scenes. Implied moral guidelines for behavior. Several characters dealt with finding and maintaining hope, and several came to faith in God in the midst of trying situations, so those are some solid themes. We also have the idea of finding the good in even the most horrible situations. While graphic and explicit mentions of sex are avoided, there are clear sexual elements involved, especially men taking advantage of women in various ways. And violence also comes into play, including a bit of blood and gore. Our heroes are on the side of the law as Texas Rangers, and although they contemplate murder a few times, they are careful to limit their violence to those who are endangering other people.

Personal Enjoyment: 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.

I absolutely loved this book. It pulled me in instantly and I was turning pages as fast as I could. So much adventure jam packed into a story of survival, sadness and renewed love. But that best part about this book was that it has Christian undertows. This will be a book that is sure to please readers.

Sassy, also known as Rose has been held captive for 5 years by the Comanches. She has always hoped that somehow she would be able to escape or be rescued. If she is rescued will her husband accept her? Will he recognize that the child she has had is his? Surely he must since he looks just like him.

Levi, has been carrying around a letter from his little sister for 5 years about her friend going missing. He has always kept an eye out when he was roaming as a Texas Ranger. What will happen when it is his job to help with the peace treaty between the Republic of Texas and the Indian Nations?

Laura, kidnapped by the Indians is pregnant and scared. What will become of her when she is returned to civilization? Will her family accept her? What about her child, he or she will always be a half breed, what man would marry a woman who has half breed for a child? Is there any hope for her?

Wallace, has heard about Rebecca for years from his partner, Levi. Now the time has come that he is going to meet her. Will they hit it off? Will she be a beautiful as he has dreamt? But he has met and helped to save the young Laura. They have formed a friendship or has it become more as they traveled back to civilization? Wallace is torn, but he needs to make a decision...what will he decide.

One can't help but root for Levi and Rose throughout the book. It is clear that they belong together and that Levy should be the one raising Charley.

Sassy (Rose) is stolen by Indians, for five years she is forced to be a third wife of a warrior. Her American son is born while she is captive. He is raised as and Indian, but Rose tries to raise him as her son, an American.

Finally Texas Rangers, Levy Baylor and Wallace Rusk show up to trade items for the white women. Levy ends up trading his horse, gun and other items for Rose and her son Charley. Levy recognized Rose as his sister's best friend who he knew came up missing five years ago.

Levy and Rose can't hide their attraction to each other and quickly fall in love, but there is a problem. Rose is still married to Charley's dad.

The story shows their struggles with their feelings, their trip back home, then another trip to Missouri to confront Rose's husband so she can become free to marry Levy.

Along the way, Wallace and Levy find God and learn to rely on faith more than guns.

A touching story from page one. Though there a few flaws in the book, they were easily overlooked. Ready to read the next one!

Rose was fifteen and married. She did not obey her husband and went to her mothers, the comanches got her and it would be five years later Before she would be released. Her heart would go to another. Halfway through this book it got very redundant, over and over will he won't he. That is why it got only three stars, the story was good.

This story takes place when Texas was not a state, Indians use to steel young women and do awful things to them. These women were brutally beaten and forced into slavery for the squaws. Some were for breeding. In any case some of these women were brought back into the Society and had a hard time adjusting to the changes around them, most came back with babies in their bellies and the children were ridiculed and had hard lives. This story is about a few women who were saved, the book is very good. My opinion is it dragged on a bit with getting to the husband, what ifs were a plenty, a whole lot of bad grammar due to the characters.

I do recommend this book. It's really not a stand alone because you are left with the ending thinking we'll what next.
