Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I loosely base these books around the historical events of the time.  But I try not to be a slave to history as, in the end, these are works of fiction. So I sometimes take a few historical liberties for the sake of the story.  For example the Bowie knife wasn't developed when Marty got his, it was actually 30 years later, but I wanted him to have a fighting knife everyone would be able to visualise.  The other thing is his promotion to Lieutenant at the tender age of almost 18. I know it was early for the main stream Navy, but that's not where he is. The S.O.F. is totally fictional and I reserve the right to bend a few rules on their behalf.  In the end its a story, a bit of a yarn, so just enjoy.

About the Author

I am a child in my late fifties who enjoys making up stories to amuse myself.  I was once an avionics engineer and after that a game designer.  I now work in the embedded software industry in Business Development.  I travel a lot and spend many nights in hotels. So I started to write down one of the stories I had going around in my head. The Dorset Boy was born.  I live in Holland with my wife and pets in the middle of nowhere.  I love the country life and could never live in a town. Like Marty.

Midshipman and now Lieutenant Stockley is an official spy and privateer of sorts at the young age of 17. His girl is a Countess and he has a secretive career. He Jas 6 good mates that watch his back. Fun read!

I’m not a big fan of intel work so I get bored with ‘ spy stuff’ . For those who like it though, our hero just can do no wrong so enjoy Book 2. Young Martin will daze and amaze you with his moves. I wish I would have had half his military intuition when I joined. He’s quite the the fellow!

After serving 30 years in the Navy, I have been exposed to battles to Books and BS. This author through his spinning of yarns makes me feel right at home and fully entertained. My only regret is, I haven’t discovered him earlier and look forward to every new submission. If you love coming at age stories where the protagonist becomes an unwitting hero this series is right down your alley. I hope you pick up this book and read it and get as much enjoyment out of this series as I have. Respectfully, DivineComedy001.

The book is another rousing sea tale. Lots of fun and we'll written. However, the editing errors are quite distracting. If not for them, this would be a five star review. I urge the author to seek help in proofreading as the automated process is not doing the job. If you are attending a writer's conference, such as LTUE, ask your fellow writers.
The book is good and I urge others to read it.

I started this series looking for something along the lines of O'Brian but found a very different experience. Marty has an amazing series of adventures, quite beyond anything of this genre that I have previously read. I would recommend this book and the series to any young reader who is looking for an exciting adventure story. I think adults will find it less to their liking. The one major thing that distracted me was the poor editing. Words were capitalized that shouldn't, words that should weren't, incorrect usage such as "dear" of "deer", and the occasional mismatch of subject and predicate, with one being plural and the other singular. I enjoyed the first two books of the series but probably won't read any more.

Great adventure makes me wish I was young and dashing 😊. Nine more words to make them happy so I can post this review.

Things get a little over the top. The story moves along quickly with lots of action. Reading Hornblower type fiction requires more willing suspension of disbelief than listening to politicians' promises. One senior officer remarks that Marty (our 17 year old hero) has gained more prize money in his four years than he (a captain) has in his entire career. To make mere mortals feel even more inadequate, a beautiful rich young widow with a strong sex drive falls in love with him!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good proof reader needed
Reviewed in Australia on August 12, 2019
An enjoyable, and rattling good yarn. However, a good proof reader is needed. Occasionally a character is mixed up (Philippe = Serge). Spelling needs attention especially where homonyms exist (“sight” is always misspelled “site”). And the French phrases show evidence of an uncritical online translator with no actual knowledge of it (direct translation of English idiom: “Pourquoi oui” for “Why yes”, for example, which is meaningless. The French would say, “Mais oui”.). Don’t be in such a rush to publish!
