In Dangerous Company: The Dorset Boy Book 4 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,905 ratings

In this Fourth book of The Dorset Boy series its 1802, peace is declared in Europe and India is in a state of change. The East India Company is gradually gaining control, but the problem of pirate attacks from their base at Réunion on East Indiamen ships in the Indian Ocean is getting worse. On top of that Maharaja Holkar, who is no friend of the British, has had enough of the internal bickering’s of the Maratha Nobles and is on the march to capture Pune and eliminate the Peshwa. With a daring rescue Marty helps Arthur Wellesley get the Bassein Accord in place. 1803 sees our hero back in Europe, just in time for the war with France to start up again. Put in charge of the Special Operations Flotilla, he discovers that being in command is very different than being number two, that failure is as likely as success and has its consequences. Ship to ship and shore actions, love, loss, revenge and a little business on the side, Marty and Caroline, Blaez and their followers move from one adventure to the next leaving a trail of destruction and pain for the French.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book was fun to write, as the research was much more intense than the previous ones.  Getting Arthur Wellesley into the story was something I always wanted to do.  He was un unprecedented snob to all accounts but no one becomes a leader of his magnitude without recognising talent when they see it.  So I wanted to explore that side of him.  Contradictions are, after all, meat and drink to the historical author.  I also wanted to expand on Caroline's contribution to their partnership other than being good in bed. Characters from the past come back to haunt him and he has to deal with treachery.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.Chris

About the Author

I left school at 16 and did an apprenticeship to become an Avionics technician.  It was the best thing I could have done as school and me never got on very well, I found it boring and learning by rote almost impossible. Having said that I have learnt more about writing over the last couple of years writing these books than I ever learnt at school.  I have also discovered a scholar in myself that I didn't know existed as well. I really enjoy researching and learning about all the historical  elements in the books.  One day I will become a full time author but the mortgage demands that I keep the day job for the time being.

Marty is now a privateer working for the British to clear the Caribbean of French and Spanish pirates. Caroline and the kids remain in England. Blaze is with Marty.

Once again Martin is one step ahead in planning and out smarting his adversaries. A naval officer one minute, an avenging pariah the next, then a privateer out to assist mother England in it control of the high seas. Exciting, can't put down at times.

Like all the books so far in this series, the hero is a bit beyond belief. By age 23 he is a famous Royal Navy Lt, a Lord, enormously wealthy, land owner, shipping magnate, and never does anything wrong. A paragon of virtue and the most accomplished and deadly fighter.

There is a modicum of realism in the history, and a bit of detail about naval warfare, but the series is more amusing than exciting. No comparison to Lewrie!

Enjoyable read. Marty would be a boon companion to W.E.B. Britain's IS Marine Sgt to Captain WWII hero. But sounds too much like modern SOF activities.

I have read all and am waiting for No 5. I have found all books interesting and hard to put down. I have also found them educational. I have a world map with me and follow the ship's in there journeys. It is interesting and you do not realies that things like the steam engine were being invented. The whole 4 books are a great and interesting story thanks Greg Smith

Good fast moving action. Found it to be light reading but would have preferred a bit more explanation of the escapes from various situations. the characters move from and too occupied countries too quickly and too easily.
