- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2025I really enjoyed this novel. The story begins with the kidnapping of a woman and ends happily ever after. This book touches on how women ment nothing to most men at the time, and how bitterness and anger can destroy a person, who is willing to do anything to anyone - including murder - to get what they think is rightfully theirs.
Although Page was the daughter of an English laird, she was never given a name by her dad and was forced to work for her food and housing her entire young life, so the servants nick-named her page. We meet a group of men as they travel through the bitter cold upper highlands, and get to know them as they play, fight, eat and survive.
There are many humerous scenes, and many that will bring tears to your eyes. Tanya Crosby did a great job on this one
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2014It’s been a good long while since I’ve read one of these vintage highland romances and even though this one does fall victim to several tropes of the sub-genre it was mostly a lot of fun to read.
Scotland 1818 When Iain married Mairi it was with the hope that their union would end the feud between their clans. Instead she loathed him and right after giving birth to their son she jumped to her death (dramatic much?). Naturally everyone blamed him. Fast forward few years and Iain’s been spending his time ruling his clan and raising his son and steering clear of the womanfolk. Can you blame him? But when his son is kidnapped he and his clan rescue him and a woman named Page who no one apparently wants.
This all happens in the first few chapter so no worries that I’ve gone and spoiled it all.
The rest of the book is a spirited romp (yep, I’m digging out the golden oldie review clichés for this one) that basically follows spitfire Page, Iain and his clan of rowdy Scotsman around as they face treachery and drop their pants because them Scots like being as naked as they day they were born. Just trust me, it is some silly fun. It’s a little frustrating too, I’m not gonna lie, because Iain has kept things from Page that she really should know about but he’s done it to spare her tender feelings. Sweet but not the smartest move. If there are any menfolk reading this you might want to listen up. This tactic, no matter how well intentioned your motives, will always come back to bite you in the naked behind. Just saying.
The cast is filled with larger than life types, the romance though a wee bit aggravating at times, is tender and lovely and the relationships develop believably. I can forgive all the rest of the nitpicky stuff because the book made me smile quite a few times and that’s enough for me.
Your enjoyment of this story will rest on your tolerance for this sort of plot, exclamation marks, an excess of verra, mayhaps and dinna’s in the dialogue and damaged but good natured characters. I liked it, found it romantic even, but as I said I haven’t read one of these in ages and it was a nice blast to past for me and though it was way too long, it mostly just made feel happy to be reading it. Here’s a little taste to see if the humor works for you.
“Page shuddered at the bold way he appraised her once more. No man had ever dared look at her so—with such undisguised lust. It sent a jolt of alarm racing through her. And to her dismay, the tiniest thrill.
Another quiver shook her.
Mayhap she’d lost her wits when she’d collided with his monolith of a friend?
She cast a glance at the others and found them all staring, mouths agape. Page hoped their idiocy wasn’t contagious. They were half-wits! Every last one of them!
“Catching glowworms perchance?” she asked.
A ridiculous sight, the lot of them; their brows drew together in unison and they cast surprised glances at each other, then snapped their mouths shut.
“Bones o’ the bluidy saints, wench! ‘Tis no wonder your da lets you aboot in the middle o’ the night,” the leader said. “He’s like to be hopin’ ye’ll lose your way home in the dark.”

- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2019Overall, it wasn't a bad book. Both Iain and Page were actually likeable characters. I just found myself irritated with this whole clan and the flow of the story. These people had no loyalty. We spend 72% of the book with them traveling from her home to his and not one of the 40 men traveling with his is a friend. One guy has fleas the entire time and no one says a thing to him. I was even annoyed that it took them so long to be honest with her about why she was riding with them. The whole journey she is under the false illusion that she might be rescued which is never going to happen and we as the reader know this fairly early so why the authow draws this theme out is beyond me. The only time I wasn't rolling my eyes was when Iain interacted with his son. Those were the best moments.
The traitor in the midst was so obvious to me from the beginning and I wanted to smack Iain upside the head for not seeing it too. Like dude come on, this man's whole vibe is off and no one is paying a bit of attention. All these men did was argue and get on my nerve. Seriously, up til this point in the story, I don't know how this clan became so powerful. Iain is holding these people together by his own commanding presence. I haven't found one likeable member of this clan. None of them have redeeming qualities. At this point, I am ready to throw the whole clan away. And what had me just stop at the 72% mark and write this review???? These people have been on the road dirty from travel (no clue for how long but it has been several days), and not once has the author said anyone has freshened up, rinsed their mouths out, or taken a wash (other than the one time when Page tried to escape) and what hapoens as soon as Iain and Page are behind closed doors! You guessed it, they make love! Excuse me, since when does a laird come in from several days of travel and not order a bath immediately or take a dip in some body of water!! Since when does a woman not want to clean herself of all the dust and smell of horse. Not these people. And Iain just too easily handed his son off to a servant (I dont care how long he has known her). Excuse me but the whole household was drugged and your son was kidnapped! Someone there did it! She could have been in on it. I don't trust this woman at all. She was very weird at his son's birthing. I found it odd that he warned his men about being traitors but felt very comfortable handing off his son to the very people he was with when he was kidnapped. This book and it's characters were just confused. One minute they liked each other, the next minute they questioned their feelings, only to start making out. One minute Iain started putting pieces together and seeing the oddity of things not adding up. Then the next minute he is brushing it all aside and rationalizing exactly what he knows to be completely off. The book could have been so much better if the author had figured out earlier what to do with these characters. Their feelings were all over the place. The conflict in the story could have been about the traitor because he was definitely 10 steps ahead of everyone. Instead we have the traitor, Page's insecurity, Iain's uncertainty, a disloyal clan, a king who wants to take over the highlands, lies, secrets, etc. It was just too much drawn out. Pick your poison instead of having all of this jumbled together throughout the whole story. Having confused characters makes for a confused reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read!!
I usually read Regency books but thought I might enjoy a change, which I did. I found a little difficult understanding Scottish dialogues because of the verbs (dinna etc. ) but averall I liked the plot and the characters and will probably look for something else by this author. A pity I couldn't find the epilogue she was talking about!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good dad versus bad dad
What a great opening scene in this dramatic fast paced romance. You can almost feel the grass under Page's feet as she tries to escape her captors, a band of highland warriors. They want Page so they can force her father the Earl Fitzsimon to release the laird's child. But during hostage negotiations they discover the Earl cares nothing for his daughter and is happy for her to be killed. Laird Iain is heartsick over the Earl's cruelty and his intent to cut Page's tongue out. Having recovered his son through trickery Ian protects Page by taking her home as their prisoner. Along the way sparks fly but there is treachery in Iain's clan and his son is not yet safe.
There are so many good things about this tale. The plot is woven so well with lots of strands coming together in a seamless whole. The romantic attraction is steamy without reading like every other romance novel. The hero is witty, his child is adorable. And Page's story has a lot of pathos as she longs for affection from her truly vile father.
I not sure why a book of this quality was a freebie when I bought it. It's a great advertisement for the author, and I am now hunting down other books of hers.

heartwarming stories, loveable characters reapearing in all books, steamy love scenes and just the right amount of suspense in a lovingly described Highland setting and a real historic background. as said above: enjoy the whole series!

5.0 out of 5 stars My kind of historical romance! 💖
I loved this book! The characters were well written and the scenes flowed really well. Reading along, I could see it all in my minds eye. As well as Page and Iain there were some humorous and lovable secondary characters like Brock and his beloved Merry Bells (minus the fleas). Iain and Page had great chemistry and a nice build up. Great story.
