Speak No Evil is not something I would normally read. I generally stick to SciFi and historical fiction. But I decided to pick up Speak No Evil because a) it is written by an author who’s historical fiction I enjoy and b) it was free (and still is as of when I am writing this.) Then I added on the audiobook for a very reasonable price.

Good decision. Speak No Evil is gothic and creepy. Maybe those are two words for the same thing, but I needed to write both of them. Dark, with a little bit of southern attitude too. Using genre terms, I would say romantic suspense, but all those other words are better descriptors.

First I want to review a bit of the blurb. “Lifting the veil of secrecy on a grand Southern family in decline.” Makes you think the plantation is going to heck. In reality, the Aldridge family has a complex and politically incorrect (former slave owners) history. But rather than decline, the family has evolved and adapted to the times. As for secrets, there are quite a few. That is what makes for a good story right?

Speak No Evil takes place around Charleston and Folly Beach, South Carolina, including the Aldridge’s Oyster Point Plantation. Southern living, including food, hot humid weather, coastal scenery and the area’s history are all part of the atmosphere of the story. Never having been in that part of the country, I soaked up the sights, sounds and sometimes smells of South Carolina just like a tourist.

There are three Aldridge sisters, but oldest sister Caroline is the focus of this book. Caroline broke up with Jack Shaw 10 years ago. Seeing him at her mom’s funeral did not bring back fond memories. Or did it? It soon becomes obvious that neither have forgotten their feelings for one another.

A murder may tear them apart again. As the detective in charge, Jack has a conflict of interest with Caroline who is digging for information to print in the paper. This ongoing conflict keeps them both arguing and making up for most of the book. Relationships are never easy.

The murderer is not identified, but the reader is treated to a third person perspective. This is where the description of creepy comes in. He or she may start having ordinary thoughts, but quickly they turn dark, judgmental and anticipatory. So – creepy. If you read the book, these sections are italicized.

Listening to the audiobook, you can’t hear italics, but you can sense the mood change. Overall, Julie McKay’s narration was well done and eventually led me to purchase the next audiobook in the series. Ms. Mckay’s voice makes me think she is of an age as the sisters Aldrige, so she is a good fit for the books.

You would think the book is about the murder mystery and the family secrets. And it is, but there is so much more. In Speak No Evil, for Caroline, the story is about her choosing who she wants to be, where she wants to be and who she wants in her life. One assumes each sister will get that opportunity in the Aldridge Sisters series, and I am looking forward to Augusta’s and Savannah’s stories.

Near the end of the book, the police investigation results in an arrest, but I have to tell you, I was really skeptical. But I don’t consider this to be a spoiler, because the book blurb for Tell No Lies suggests that the guilty party may still be out there. So, kind of a cliffhanger, but only sort of. No star-deductions from me on this one. Gothic, creepy, dark with southern attitude, Speak No Evil gets 5 stars!

I had never heard of this author before, but I saw this as a steal on Bookbub and decided to give it a try. So glad I did. The writing is really good, and I blew through this book in a weekend. The characters are interesting, and the plot - about three estranged sisters who are forced to live together for a year in an old Southern plantation house in order to inherit $23 million from their mother - was intriguing. What I liked best, though, was the Southern Gothic atmosphere. The crumbling mansion, the rotten-egg smell of the swamp, the dusty antiques in the attic. The descriptive setting was fantastic, and the ending left me wanting more. Luckily, there are sequels.

SPEAK NO EVIL has everything you could want in a great romantic suspense, with the highlight being the suspense, but with enough romance to keep it spicy. It brings everything to the table from a crafty killer, family drama, to love lost and found again.

Three sisters have come to their mother's funeral to put everything away, including painful memories not quite forgotten, but instead end up staying because their mother's will dictates that if they want the bulk of her fortune, they must remain in the house for a year. Caroline, Savannah and Augusta don't want to stay, but they all decide in the end to abide by their mother's wishes. Caroline Aldridge has been left in charge of the Tribune, her mother's newspaper. She also has run into her former fiance, Jack Shaw, who is a local police detective. She's never gotten over Jack, but there is that trust issue that she isn't sure she can get past because he was found in bed with her best friend 10 years ago. Her sisters aren't thrilled at having to stay at the house either, so there is also the issue of trying to forge new relationships with them as well. If her personal life wasn't bad enough, there are also young women turning up missing or dead, all pointing toward a serial killer. Things heat up the more she depends on Jack, with sizzling tension between them, she's not sure how much longer she can deny her heart. Jack is still in love with Caroline, but there are too many unspoken barriers, as well as new issues that always seem to crop up between them. When Caroline pushes her new found position at the newspaper to it's limits regarding the women, she may have not only compromised the paper, but her relationship with Jack that is seemingly starting up again. The killer seems intent on playing a deadly game, and with little leads, will Jack be able to zero in on his identity before the killer reaches his ultimate target?

Set in the beach town of Folly, near Charleston SC, there were all the little southern nuances and details that give the book a graceful setting. Yet, Crosby easily paints an eerie setting that on the outside seems beautiful, but lurking beneath the shadows is something sinister. Reminiscent of an old Hitchcock film, Crosby is able to give the reader the shadowy figure in the background, always close, but unseen by the hero and heroine. As for the romance, I loved the tension between Jack and Caroline, and Crosby doesn't get bogged down in the "details" of the sex, but engages the reader into using their own imagination. Full of suspense, angst and romance, this is the perfect book to settle down with for the weekend. Although Crosby seemingly ties up the ending, there is just something about it that has me feeling there is more to the story. I hope with the next books about the other two sisters, I hope she proves me right!

I thought the book was interesting and well-written, the concept, story and characters are well developed and engaging. But the ending was disappointing, leaves too many unanswered questions, was too "easy" and just didn't live up to the rest of the book. Did I miss something? Why did Patterson start a fire, lead everyone to him and not kill Caroline? It doesn't fit or make dramatic sense. The fact that Patterson is the only suspect and turns out to be the killer is boring. Or does a completely different result come out in the next book???

This was a very interesting read with great characters. Some of the parts of this story were so sad. It also made me wonder if some things would get resolved. It kept me on my toes. The ending was really interesting and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

After the death of their Newspaper owner mother, the three sisters Caroline, Augusta and Samantha have to live together at their old house for a year, otherwise their inheritance is going to charity. Last Will executor is their mother's long time housekeeper, Sadie. Caroline, chosen to lead the newspaper, finds it difficult to fill her mother's shoes, especially as it brings her into contact with her cheating ex-fiancé, local Cop Jack.
When a killer brings terror into the heart of the little town's residents, Jack and Caroline are torn between their duties and the attraction that still sparks between them. Trying to balance Jack, the new bond that's developing between the three sisters, and the newspaper, Caroline seems to have bitten off more than she can chew, and now she seems to have got into the killer's line of sight.
Not nail-biting tension, but enough tension to keep me glued to the pages, which in my opinion makes this a very good book. After a slow start (slow meaning too many deep thought processes slowing down the "action"), the narration picks up and gets more interesting as more and more details about the past and the killer are revealed.
And I have to say, there are enough hints and clues (or red herrings???) to make me believe that whoever was arrested at the end is NOT the real killer. I suspect someone much closer to the sisters..... sorry, hope that was not too much of a spoiler, just a personal opinion.
Ah well, although this is a standalone book in the series, looks as if I just have to get the others to find out if I was right or wrong.
And yes, definitely a recommendation if you like mystery and thrillers.
