The Holly & the Ivy (Daughters of Avalon) Kindle Edition
Join the MacKinnon clan for a magical reunion, bringing together old friends and new for a Yuletide never to be forgotten.
Malcom MacKinnon has been gone from Chreagach Mhor for more than ten years. He’s never met the youngest MacKinnon, but while he’s looking forward to their first meeting, Alexander Ailbeart MacKinnon isn’t quite as enthusiastic to meet the brother who, in his eyes, abandoned their clan. Having received word Malcom and his new wife are on the way, he’s on his heels now, making sure their home is safeguarded from forces that threaten his family’s joy. Will the brothers finally come together after so long?
This short story can be read as a stand-alone but will make more sense if read after reading THE KING’S FAVORITE in the Daughters of Avalon series.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2021Set in the 1100’s this tale describes Christmas traditions and the relationships within the MacKinnon clan after the return of one of their own after a long absence. It’s a blend of fantasy and historical romance. I’m not really into “fantasy” but the romance part is lovely.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019I really enjoyed reading this Novella. It's Absolutely Wonderful & Adorable.
Alexander (Alex) MacKinnon is a 11 year old boy who is angry with his older brother he has yet to meet. When he learns his Brother Malcolm is coming home after 11 years he sets out to ensure Malcolm & his witch wife Elspeth are miserable & will leave ASAP.
He is a little hellion as it is.
Will Alex make amends with his Brother Malcolm & Wife? Or will he chase away his older brother forever?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2021This was part of a multi author bundle called ALL THINGS MERRY AND BRIGHT. I didn't realize it and purchased it too.
In first few pages, wrong named used - stated Malcom brows collided, but it should have said Alex.
I felt like I missed another story. The author tells you you should read two other stories before this one. Granted the first one is free, but the second one this is tied too is expensive, if you read a lot. People introduced with talk of back stories, and was confusing. I feel if a story is going to be part of a bundle, it shouldn't be tied to previous stories and leave the reading feeling left out of a secret.
Clean story, reminded me of the Prodigal Son story in the Bible. Had a touch of magic and was interesting. (ljb)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020For a short story it held my attention from start to finish. I liked the way it showed a typical younger brother can feel left out and angry. Only to have it change with a special gift from the brother he resents but really wants to look up to! It was wonderful to be allowed to follow Malcolm and Elspeth's lives in meeting their family members at a special time. And to share in their news of a new baby. I can't wait to read the whole series now to see how it all works out for them all of the sisters!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019Learning that Malcom and his witch wife was coming for Yuletide Alex was very angry. All eleven of his years never once did Malcom come to see him. Alex put horse shoes, an iron dagger, extra salt into the bread and collected holly and Ivy to ward off a witch. Everyone was so happy to see them but Alex did not come around. Malcom gifted Alex a sword that he could not lift. Alex was so proud that he decided to go undo all his ill-conceived efforts.
