"Magical from the very start." —InD'Tale Reviews

Embark on a journey into magical Medieval Scotland, to a time when the shadowy Picts are in peril of vanishing from the annals of history, and Scotland itself will arise as a nation from the ashes of betrayal.

A Clash of Clans.

From the Borderlands to the Highlands, Scotland's seven kingdoms are in conflict. Struggling to unite the kingdoms altogether, King David seeks an alliance with the fierce, but reclusive mountain Scot, Aidan dun Scoti. But only one woman will tempt Aidan—the accursed beauty whose father once betrayed his clan.

Love and Betrayal.

She has been offered a choice: Kill the dun Scoti or lose your only beloved son. Offered in marriage by David of Scotia as a guise for peace and cursed by Aidan's people for the sins of her father, Lìleas MacLaren is the one woman Aidan believes he is immune to. She is also the one woman who could bring the chieftain to his knees.

This is simply a breathtakingly beautiful book. Even an crabby old English teacher with a well-worn red pencil would gleefully give this new novel by Tanya Anne Crosby an A+. I found myself reading passages over and over again just to fully let the beautiful imagery fully sink in.

For example, when Lileas first lays eyes upon the "barbarian" she is to wed in the name of peace, the author describes him as such:

"Painted with intricate blue markings wherever his flesh was bared, he watched her approach with canny eyes. She could tell their color even at this distance for they were unnaturally green. The man towered over everyone who stood near him, his shoulders wide and brown--and bare, despite of the lateness of the summer. His claymore, a massive weapon meant to cleave men in two, was sheathed within his belt. His boots were laced and his legs were bare as well, revealing thighs that were as strapping as oaks."

    Phew! What a man.

And on their wedding night, as he is giving her one more chance for freedom and a way out of the marriage, he tells her "If you stay, if you lie beneath me...I will never ever let you go. Do ye ken?"

At that point, I nearly dropped my Kindle.

Tanya Anne Crosby paints a picture of medieval Highlanders with rich brushstrokes dripping in full technicolor. I'm just at a loss for words to fully describe how this story just flows right off the pages and into the reader's heart.

Having already read The Highland Brides Series and the novella HIGHLAND SONG, I already knew that this book would use the places, clans, and characters of those 5-Star stories and couldn't wait to get glimpses of more of that world. Familiar characters make cameo appearances, but not so much that a reader couldn't fully enjoy this book as a stand alone story. Having read the others only adds to the experience, but not having done so doesn't lessen the impact of the story in the least.

This book, as with the others in the Highland Brides Series, incorporates a bit of the mystical elements that were so much a part of the life of the peoples living in the The Mounth at that time. Magic and mysticism doesn't overpower the story, however, it only adds more depth and color to the tale.

If it were possible to give a higher rating than 5 stars, this novel would certainly earn that. I highly recommend it, along with the entire Highland Brides series. Download them all today and lose yourself in the Highlands!

    Tanya Anne Crosby

A sweet, humorous, and fun read for relaxing. There were moments where I was a little iffy, some issues I had in regards to editing, but outside of that I enjoyed the book. The two main characters were adorable, and I loved the surrounding characters even the perfect villian for this type of romance. I do wish there'd been a little more discussion in regards to certain discoveries(ie the curse) in more of an effort to help with the acceptance, forgiveness, and growth, but also respect that Lileas was a character who often worked through issues of that nature on her own to come to terms with them. I can respect a character of this nature as I've done this myself with certain issues.

The only other parts I was iffy about were concerning certain things like the Picts, textiles, uisge, etc. but then I read the Afterword in which the author admits to all the liberties she took along with her reasons. At that point I realized that this book is heavily more alternative/AU historical romance and not just run of the mill historical fiction. So the issues I had in that regard were easily cleared up. I can't wait to read some of the other books I have of hers as well as the other books in the Guardians of the Stone series.

I have seen and heard of this book on Ms. Tanya Anne Crosby’s website and couldn’t wait to get it! I just loved how it had some of the characters from her highland brides series which also combined part of the story of the highland brides with some wonderful new characters that I can’t wait to read more about! I really do enjoy Ms. Crosby’s Scottish highlander stories even though I haven’t read all of them but the ones I have read really do have great interesting stories with memorable lovable characters much like this new fascinating interesting book!
What a story of the cursed beautiful heroine Lileas is betrothed to a true highlander but considered by everyone a savage hero Aidan. Even though Lili is desired and everyone wants to claim her no one wants to love her due to the curse but despite the curse Lili cares for everyone and makes up for it by being sort of an amazing mystic healer. Lili hides a horrible secret from Aidan which could cause her to lose him. In all of this Lili loves Aidan plus doesn’t want to hurt him therein lies the dilemma. Ms. Crosby not only made this not a standard story of two opposite people who fall in love but yet are forced to wed. There is Scottish mysticism, Scottish folklore, political intrigue, deception, mystery, spying, interesting plot twists/turns and lastly a wonderful romance between Lili and Aidan that really takes you on a roller coaster all thrown into this great book!
Ms. Crosby also had such lovely and amazing minor characters Una was just fabulous! I can just see her in my head gazing into her keek stane reading everyone’s destiny despite her prophesies never making any sense at the time she was just brilliant and hitting everyone with her cane. I also just loved Aidan’s sisters Cailen especially Sorcha and hopefully she will have her story told too well except for Lael she kind of scared me and I think she had a lot of baggage that I don’t think she could fall for any man. I see her beating up and killing any man that would attempt to get close to her. That I can hardly wait for the next installment of the guardians of the stone that’s why I rated the book five stars. Well done Ms. Crosby and I am eagerly awaiting more of your Scottish stories!

Words alone cannot describe how much I enjoyed this story but I will do my best.

It started off telling us about Lili and her son Kellen who lived with her brother in law, Rogan, since her husband's tragic death. Rogan was creepy and mean to both of them but they were powerless to do anything about it. Lilith had been cursed previously and everyone believed that whoever she married would die young. King David decided to marry her off to Aiden who was a Pict in order to get rid of him as he didn't support David's claim to the throne.

I found the story very interesting as it told of the Picts which I haven't come across before in a highland book. It had sadness, treachery, fierce mother's love, family drama, danger, romance and a few steamy encounters. I liked all the characters and they were very different from each other. I loved how the relationship developed between Lili and Aidan despite both of them starting off not wanting to get married or trusting each other.

I would have liked more story written between the last chapter and the epilogue as there seemed to be a big gap in the storyline. e.g. something about what happened with Lili and Aidan after their encounter with Rogan or the interaction between Kellen and Aidan's family. Despite this, I loved the story and it brought tears to my eyes at the end so I highly recommend it as well as the author. This is the first book I have read by this author but it won't be the last.

Lìli has a son named Kellen she is now a widow. Rogan wants to marry her but she will not agree. David suggested she be wed to another named Aidan. They believe she is a witch but she is really just a healer. Rogan takes her son as hostage because he wants Aidan dead. He gives Lili a ring with poison to take his life and if she does she can have her son back. Lili doesn’t really want to take a life.

I enjoyed the story line. I must say there is a bit of adult content.
What really bothers me, would be the Scottish slang. It’s a bit horrid.
I do understand keeping in characteristics for that time. It was just annoying as I can’t understand the words.

    My disclaimer...
I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

Have only read 3 of the 5 books in this series but I am LOVING them!!!! Lots of history, and just enough erotica that it doesn't overload; just gives enough. I do get tired of the books where the author feels there has to be constant erotica -- this series (and this author) has just the perfect amount. Can't wait to read moe books from her .....
