I enjoyed this story that is part of a series, A US Marshall Lawkeeper Romance, by a group of talented authors. Each story in the series will read as a stand-alone and can be read in any order. The stories will all feature law enforcement heroes and the women who love them. The stories are sweet, clean based stories where the lawman finds his woman. Each will read as a stand-alone book. While this story has Christian elements, it is not preachy.

Emma Browning moved with her parents from Boston to Oklahoma. The men in town all see her as a conquest, and she envisions her life with freedom and independence. When her parents leave Oklahoma and move to California, Emma will remain. Now she is teaching the children, mostly girls and natives how to read, write, and learn math. Her other duty is rebuffing the advancements of single men in town who assume she should marry.

“Please give me a sign that I am on the right path.”

Marshall James Reed is an independent man who is impressed with Emma and admires her independence. He watches her as she interacts with the children and sees no prejudice, just a love of teaching. But would a woman like Emma be interested in a man like him? He can’t read or write and is considered a half-breed. “He became a marshall in order to do good. He wanted to make a difference, and upholding order or servicing justice seemed to be the only way for him.”

“You are a blessing and a gift to this world. When your father left us, he gave you his legacy—those beautiful eyes to see the good in the harsh world.” –his mother

A friendship comes between Emma and James, with no judgment. He comes to her to learn to read and write, and in the process, they become closer.

James: “I won’t chase you like those other boys.”
Emma: “I want my independence too.”
James: “Maybe you haven’t had the right man courting you, then.”
Emma: “And I suppose you are the right man?”
James: “I know I am. I’m just waiting for you to realize it.”

The story has a sweet, clean romance between James and Emma. He doesn’t push, and he respects her for the strong, caring woman she is. He gives her space, and when he is gone, she misses him deeply. Will he allow her to continue teaching? What about his job as a marshall?

“Is this what love was? Not just the fluttering of her heart, but the feeling that your own special someone would support you in whatever you did? Someone that believed in you and treasured you for who you were?”

“I think our lives will be what we make of it—together. We aren’t cursed at all, my love. We are blessed and recognize the second chance that we’ve been given.”

Emma wants a different style of life. She wants to teach anyone who wants to learn. Not just the white fancy boys from town. Poor folk, rich folk, and the Indians. Because her class is open to all she gets very little support.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I have always loved stories like this. I loved the fact that Emma was taught to respect EVERYONE. No matter their circumstances, gender, or background. I really wish the book had been longer.

Like always, Ginny Sterling has done a terrific job or telling a story that pulls in the reader and makes them fall in love with the characters. Can't say how much I love this book and how highly I recommend it! This is a must read!

I love all these stories. They show how the West was and the love the cowboys have for their families. It's that love that draws me to continue reading them. Keep them coming please.

When Emma Browning’s parents left Oklahoma and moved to California, Emma decided to stay. She loves Oklahoma and didn’t want to leave. Emma’s unmarried and living outside of town where men outnumber the women and it’s probably not safe for Emma to be living alone. Emma just wants to teach the Indian children and not lose her freedom by getting married. She’s had plenty of men ask for her hand. When Marshal James Reed arrives in town looking for an outlaw, Emma’s intrigued by the mystery man.

The Marshal is interested in Emma, but doesn’t know what to do about it as he’s a lawman and doesn’t want to endanger Emma’s life by falling for her. But when James tells Emma his secret and she agrees to help him, they both realize there is an attraction between them. When James leaves to go after the outlaw with his posse, Emma starts to realize how much she misses him. When he arrives back in town, half dead from a bullet wound, Emma’s there to patch him up. But he leaves the next day so as to not endanger her life.

Will these two ever realize that being together is not a bad thing and they can handle anything that comes their way? I did enjoy the book, I just wish it had been longer so we could have gotten to know Emma and James better.

The story was clean and had no errors in punctuation or grammar. (It's getter harder to say that about ebooks.) The writing was choppy and seemed to jump around. Mostly, however, it was listed as Christian fiction. I expect that something labeled as Christian would have a redemptive message, not just that the MMC said he prayed as he was in the middle of a tornado. I'll not read any more from this author.

I enjoyed the story of a young woman living on her own out west after her parents moved to California. She was pursued by many men romantically, but chose to wait for love.
