In this serialized novel installment, we follow Captain Doneir and his complicated life in the Aether Guard. Doneir is driven by the desire to escape and distance himself from his family but is also driven by structure and power. Not willing to sacrifice his personal desires, he orders his men to recruit as many possible for their next patrol. Delving into some of Doneir's backstory and introducing a ragtag collection of new recruits sets up the next installment perfectly. While the ending would be abrupt for a novel, it fits perfectly if a radio announcer broke into the action and said, "tune in next time to see what happens to Doneir and his new patrol as they head out on their mission." A quick read, interesting characters, and a fantasy tale with old radio program feels. Great way to spend an hour reading.

Yes, the ending does seem a bit abrupt. Having read the first book, and also realizing this is a serial, I cut Mr. Gull some slack on leaving us hanging. I do hope that the third book doesn't cut to a completely different character not associated with Captain Doneir, though. I seriously need to know what happens when he goes to relieve Captain Ganse's crew.

Doneir is an interesting character. Both sympathetic and a little bit maddening. He's had a rough time of it growing up in the shadow of his jerk-nose father. He's allowed his lust for proving himself to get out of hand, though. At times he seems ready for a rubber room. At other times his desire to be the best and train his men to be the best is a admirable.

There's also a bit of humor in this volume which I found lacking in the first book. The interaction between Doneir and a typical pencil-pusher at the beginning of the story is priceless. Looking forward to the next volume.

This book is really hard to give a star rating to because it feels incomplete. From the quality of the world building, the character development and to a lesser extent the writing it would be worth four, pushing towards five stars. For leaving the reader hanging before anything much happens two stars. As a compromise I'm giving three stars overall. Right now, when you have to wait for the next Act to be written, this rating seems fair but in a year or so when the full series is done and you can buy the next Act immediately and keep going maybe it will seem unfairly harsh.

I'd enjoyed the Act 0 short story - which does have a reasonable end point - sat down to read this, got really sucked into the world and the character and was ready to read all night, then suddenly it was over before anything much had happened. The patrol of guardsmen are safely back at their base after the events in the Act 0 book. There's no real threat, all they have to do is train, but we learn a lot more about the world, the politics and the character of the main character and despite the lack of action it is all quite engrossing. Then the patrol is sent out on another mission. Just as they leave the town the book ends. That's it.

I'm sucked in and committed, I want to know what happens next so I'm going to buy the next one when it comes out. But I'm left frustrated and wishing I'd waited until the story had been brought to a proper book-level ending.
