When he returns from a trip, Prince Tahj senses unrest… …. even before his best friend and captain, Radeem, warns him. Radeem heard rumors and suspects the King’s advisor is planning to overthrow the crown. The darkly bitter Grand Vizier, Lord Boltar, is about to claim what he believes belongs to him, the rule of Avistad. Stolen from her home, Bashea is left bound and gagged on the prince’s bedroom floor. Just as Tahj discovers a captive girl in his bedroom, left as a “gift” from Lord Boltar, fighting erupts. Tahj, Radeem, and Bashea escape the castle in a hail of arrows. The pair is drawn closer together as they face various perils, Boltar’s soldiers, a screaming panther, even the scathing winds of a desert storm. Born from the fire of a coup, Tahj and Bashea’s relationship burns with a passion that neither of them quite understands. After what she went through at the hands of Boltar’s men, Bashea is afraid to trust. Yet it is her fiery nature that both appeals to Tahj, and drives him crazy. In fact, when Bashea’s brother, Bagrat, informs Tahj that Bashea means “lips of the gods,” he retorts, “Are you sure you don’t mean tongue of the devil?” It takes a long separation to bring them back to each other, but when Tahj does return, it is once again during a battle with Lord Boltar. But now the overlord, who has been forced beyond reason by Tahj’s success in retaking the throne, is an even more dangerous threat than before. Reunited, will Tahj and Bashea be strong enough to defeat their twisted and powerful enemy?

I completely enjoyed M.J. Schiller's debut novel, Taken by Storm. Written with beautifully sculpted detail, I was submersed in the seas of wind and sand. Tahj is completely lovable with his innocence and struggles between his destiny and his will. Bashea's amazing determination and focus don't deter Tahj from doing what's right or with winning her heart. This romantic mix of social classes mixed with non-stop adventure was just the right mix.

I love stories, especially romances with feisty women and Bashea definitely is one. We are introduced to her as a victim, but soon find she is a vastly capable woman who just so happens to be in the wrong place. Tahj is her daring and dashing hero along with Radeem, his right hand man who is full of humor and charm. Together the trio make it through a treacherous desert world full of enemy attacks and murderous villains. I loved the unconventional story and found myself swept away by it's breathtaking beauty. I highly recommend this book from M.J. Schiller as well as anything else she produces. Just reading M.J.'s work makes me want to be a better writer

Taken by Storm is a delightfully exciting debut from a talented writer. MJ Schiller tells a great story, filled with murder, lust, and royal family relationship saga that makes this read a must-have. Readers will remember her characters and yearn for their good fortune.

    Cut to the Chase:
This was a well-written, fast-paced romance with truly likeable characters and an interesting plot progression. Set in the desert, it ever-so-occasionally falls victim to the stereotypes one might expect (the scheming vizzier who overthrows the king), but it is, overall, a creative novel with interesting, strongly written characters who have a wonderfully believable journey towards each other. There’s a fairly interesting set of side characters, believable tensions throughout, and other than a few small concerns and quibbles (mentioned below) this was one of the better romances I’ve read.

Greater Detail (with spoilers at the beginning):
I need to start with spoilers because I think that one of the weakest parts of the book is actually the follow-through from the fairly action-packed, and perhaps a little controversial, beginning. We start with Bashea, our heroine, being kidnapped by a group of soldiers, gang raped, and then dumped in what ends up being Prince Tahj’s chambers.

It’s all part of a joke/diversion planned by our villain Lord Boltar, and if you can accept this rather violent start, it’s actually a very, very solid romance.

    But.

That’s a bit of a beginning to get through, and it inevitably colors the rest of the book. Bashea has to deal with facing a couple of her rapists at different parts of the book, and there is, of course, fallout in terms of nightmares, acceptance by her family, etc. Overall, I felt that dealing with the ramifications of the rape are probably the least well-handled part of the book (that and the villain, Boltar, sometimes feels a little predictable).

Otherwise, it’s a really well written, action-packed novel. I love that many of the more common tropes are turned on their heads — Prince Tahj is the virgin, the sensitive one, whereas Bashea is headstrong, stubborn, and in many ways the more aggressive one in their romantic relationship. They have loyal friends and family members, and feel like fully fleshed out characters who have legitimate reasons to be both attracted to one another, as well as to worry about what the possible ramifications of an ultimate relationship might look like. The pacing, details, visualization, and character development are all first rate — if you’re in the mood for a more hard-hitting, action-romance (this isn’t a light-hearted read, despite some funny moments), then this is well worth the read.

    Comparisons to Other Authors:
Rape in romance is actually a fairly common trope — but it’s almost always attempted rape. Other than one Catherine Coulter romance, I can’t really think of any other novel where the heroine has been gang raped… that’s traumatic, and serious stuff that romance doesn’t usually stray towards. And though it’s not handled lightly here, I’m not sure whether or not there should have been more about that, because it’s so very serious.

Other than that, this is seriously action packed, it’s got a nicely fleshed out supporting cast (like Lisa Kleypas novels, or some of the Nora Roberts family series/novels), and some lovely settings and details.

TAKEN BY STORM is a historical novel set in a fictional land and time period (aka historical fantasy). But that certainly doesn't detract from the beauty of the story. Ms. Schiller creates a wonderful landscape and rich characterization that mimics an Arabian world and a history that feels as authentic as if I had been there with Tahj and Bashea.

The story starts with political upheaval that destroys life as Prince Tahj knows it, and sheep-herder's daughter Bashea suffers the worst fate imaginable to a woman. Yet, they find each other amidst a takeover coup at Prince Tahj's family castle, and manage to escape into the desert. Despite their differences, loyal and shy Tahj and strong-willed Bashea begin to have feelings for each other as they seek out Bashea's family to return her to safety. Even when Tahj must leave to avenge his family, he can think of nothing but building a safe life for himself and Bashea together.

TAKEN BY STORM is full of adventure, peril and over-protective families. Through it all, Tahj and Bashea fight to come together. With a backdrop of distrust, betrayal, and class differences, their romance is organic and real. You can't help but fall in love with the world Ms. Schiller has created and the love story that will stay with you for a long time after you read the last page. I highly recommend TAKEN BY STORM.

(I received a review copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review).
