The Demoiselle Who Departed (Daytona Beach Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 92 ratings

Tuesday, the seventh of October, will be a night Marveen Dodge will long remember. That was when her beau, Officer Bill Gordon, popped the question while dancing at the Trocadero.

Is it true love? Marveen's mother has some thoughts on the matter but, then again, when doesn't she?

Meanwhile, come Wednesday, Tom Jarrell and Ronnie Grisham are back in their Beach Street office. They've just returned from their honeymoons in Miami Beach. The only thing is... their wives didn't return with them.

Local tongues will be wagging!

And then there's poor Miss van Woy, the upright and quite correct headmistress of The Casements Junior College up in Ormond Beach. She runs the exclusive school for girls housed in the old Rockefeller mansion.

It seems that one of her best pupils, Mademoiselle Jane Oliver, heiress of the famed Oliver Pickles fortune, is missing.

Miss van Woy really can't afford to have a drop of scandal attached to her school, so it's Tom and Ronnie to the rescue.

But will they find more than Miss van Woy can possibly tolerate?

Frank W. Butterfield, not an assumed name, loves old movies, wise-cracking smart guys with hearts of gold, and writing for fun.

Although he worships San Francisco, he lives at the beach on another coast.

Born on a windy day in November of 1966, he was elected President of his high school Spanish Club in the spring of 1983.

After moving across these United States like a rapid-fire pinball, he currently makes his home in a hurricane-proof motel with superior water pressure that was built in 1947.

While he hasn't met any dolphins personally, that invitation is always open.

This is a fantastic series! With each new book we are drawn in and fall a little bit more in love with characters. In particular, this book really let some of the secondary characters shine and take a leading role. I love where Marveen's story is going and how strong she is becoming. I hope Alice takes on a stronger role as well. And if you haven't started the Eddie and Whit series from this author, I highly recommend it. We get to see Ronnie in them as well!

I have enjoyed the first 3 books in this series. I like Frank Butterfield’s writing and have worked my way through his Nick and Carter books. This series has started more slowly but it has built up to a very strong plot. I like the characters and I look forward to reading more about Tom & Ronnie, Alice & Betsy, Claud & Howie and Marveen & Bill.

A lot of loose ends all tied up neatly in a way that was joyful to read about and see unfold. New characters introduced and old ones we learnt more about. I loved the surprise ending with Claud and Howie and I’m guessing we are going to learn more about all the characters in this book as Tom and Ronnie’s adventures continue. I’m really looking forward to the journey ahead.
    Frank Butterfield never disappoints us.

Another in Butterfield’s Nick Williams world and as usual very well done. The Daytona Beach stories are becoming as good as the Nick and Carter Stories

Another great read from Mr. Butterfield. I love this series as much as the Nick Williams/Carter Jones books! Excited for more crossover as they both progress.

This is only the second series I've followed faithfully, the first being Marshall Thornton's Boystown (as well as Femme and Masc, which may -- hopefully -- become a series too). What I really really about this series is the local history and the characters. With each installment I get a crash course in late 1940s Daytona Beach history as well as an update on the cast of characters, which becomes, curiously, like receiving a letter from family living in Florida - - that is, when folks still wrote letters! Finally, I must say I admire a writer who can write a story about two men in love without turning it into some kind of erotica (though Tom and Ronnie are not in a sexless relationship, to be sure). I'm patiently (?) waiting for Mr. B to come up with the fourth installment. Until then.
(PS: Marveen tucked into her plate of spaghetti, not fish. Beta readers?)
