Sarmatian (The Parthian Chronicles Book 13) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,010 ratings

War is a jealous lover who is reluctant to release me from her embrace.

Pacorus, now retired from the politics of Parthia, embarks on a journey to request the high king find a place in the empire for his Egyptian protégé, who has been offered the governorship of Roman-controlled Egypt, as well as to discover the whereabouts of his former squire.
But Queen Gallia’s assassins have unwittingly set in motion a sequence of events that will plunge the empire into peril, as well as endangering the King of Dura himself. When an invading horde of barbarians sweeps into Parthia from the north and crushes everything in its path, Pacorus is once again forced to unsheathe his sword.
But old allies cannot be relied upon and Pacorus is not the great warlord of old. With an untrustworthy high king and a cunning adversary to face, he is soon faced with his greatest challenge: saving the Parthian Empire itself.
‘Sarmatian’ is the thirteenth volume in the Parthian Chronicles series and follows on from ‘Lord of War’. A map of the Parthian Empire in the 1st century BC can be found on the maps page of my website: www.peterdarman.com.

Family, Friendship, Honor, and Courage - The Saga of the King of Dura.

Family, Friendship, Honor, and Courage - The Saga of the King of Dura.
Peter Darman took this reader on another fascinating and exciting journey in the life of King Pacorus of Dura. I visualized the interaction between characters, the fearsome battles. I could feel the environment in the desert and the lush areas where water was abundant. Both fictional and non-fictional events and people are presented - I like that. I enjoyed the small touch of sorcery. I LOVED the stronger introduction of younger characters - it's to be expected as Pacorus continues to age. With each turn of the page I knew not what to expect and that is thrilling. Most importantly the story is believable!

The storyline of Pacorus and Dura has become redundant, time for him to move up or be moved out. I was entertained in certain parts but overall I wasn’t compelled to read on, as in past adventures. Perhaps Pacorus needs to be purged centered moral compass.

For anyone who loves history with a story, Peter Darman hits all the marks....this series has been an incredible journey, and I so look forward to his books. His writing style can be readily compared to that of Cornwall,Scarrow, and Iggulden, but at a quarter of the price.....and his plots are wonderful. I know he is going to be writing a new series sometime in the near future, and I can’t wait to see where he takes us......Tim Kennedy,Edmonton Alberta.

I would think it difficult for any author to maintain the readers attention and curiosity to a storyline as long as the Parthian series : and yet again; Darman does it with aplomb. Excellent read, I only hope King Pacific lives for a hundred years more.

Another in a long series that I have enjoyed all the way through.
Mixes historical events with a good yarn, beautifully.

I so enjoy every novel in the Parthian Chronicles. Peter Darman is a talented author.
I would so enjoy seeing this series being made as an epic for the screen.
    Highly recommend!

Pacorus King of Dura treasures his friends, his people and Parthia. He's not as young as he used to be but when all that he holds dear is in peril he will stop at nothing to end the threat. In 30 years nothing as dangerous as the Samartians has come to Parthia. Can Pacorus stop the petty internal conflicts amongst Parthian nobility long enough to stop the invincible menace of the Samartian hordes...

The research in this book is amazing! I love reading and this is the best. Where do I begin? The characters, military history are interwoven and you can't put it down! I will go back to the beginning and start again. These books are good friends and the beauty of getting older is I forget the previous books and can enjoy them all over again! A 22 carat story!

5.0 out of 5 stars On and on... marvellous Parthian saga
Reviewed in France on October 27, 2019
    Excellent, as always.
Just read them all, from tome 1 "The Parthian" up to this one. The epic saga of a young Parthian, prince and heir to the crown of Hatra, vanquished, enslaved, then companion of Spartacus in his young age (circa 71 ad), and his rise through innumerable battles and achievements to become the most influential king of the Parthian empire for the next 45 years. A must-read for all antiquity fans.

Enjoyed Pacorus adventure towards old age and his eventual redundancy. Will the next story be the end of the line? Hope not.
