Barclay: Bachelors & Babies Book 4 Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,368 ratings

No one could foresee the stormy night in 1876 that changed the Givens brothers' lives forever. On their ruddy ranch road, they find a young pregnant woman who unexpectedly gives birth to triplets and then vanishes. Struggling to care for the infants, the brothers call upon Cynara, a widowed wet-nurse with a tragic past. Her sorrowful eyes and quiet strength stir something within Barclay Givens' staid heart. Yet, Cynara isn't ready to embrace a new man's love.

A new hand enters the picture but is he friend or foe? Why does he watch Cynara and the babies?

As she remains at the ranch to tend to the infants, unanswered questions loom large: Where is the babies' mother? Who is their father? With danger and mystery intertwined, the brothers must uncover the truth to secure the future of these helpless infants.

Hello and welcome to my author page. Let me tell you a little about myself, as that seems to be the main purpose of this profile. Believe it or not, I began my fiction career in the third grade when I told my class that a little sister I never had died of a black widow bite. I also wrote books through my teen years, always about a girl whose mother mistreated her by making her wash dishes, sweep the floor... you get the idea. Never finished any of those stories. But the idea of writing a real book and publishing it never occurred to me. It was a particularly vivid dream that drove me to drag out a portable typewriter and go to work on my first novel. In 1990 my second completed book, Tender Touch, brought me a first place win in a writing contest and the following year became a Golden Heart Finalist. That won me an agent and a contract from Kensington who published five of my western historical romance novels. My books have placed or won in other contests as well. Forever Mine received a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award nomination. I've always loved the Old West and I believe my novels reflect that emotion through their depth and vibrancy. I am always working on a new story. I hope you try my books and enjoy them. Follow me here on my author page and on my website at https://charleneraddon.com & get a free book.

While the story is part of the Bachelors and Babies series, it is a stand-alone story. The story is a clean historical western-based book. The story will also be an addition to the High Mountain Ranch Trilogy of the three Givens Brothers, Barclay, Jared, and Chase. But for now, it is the story of Barclay Givens and widow Cynara Stratton.

A storm approaching comes with more than heavy rain, a pregnant woman in labor shows up at the Givens ranch. The Givens have helped birth animals, but this will be a new challenge. For some reason, Minnie will stay calm with Chase, and it will be with the help of the others that deliver two boys and a girl—but their mother refuses to have anything to do with them. What a shock to discover the following morning she has left—leaving her babies behind.

Life for Cynara is full of tragedy, first the death of her husband, Wade, and then losing her baby girl. She will be called upon to be a wet nurse for another child, but he dies from crib death. What a shock when Doctor Willoughby asks her to help out triplets who were born and their mother abandoned them at the Givens ranch.

The story’s plot will have Doc bringing Cynara to the ranch as a wet nurse for the premature triplets. She finds them hungry, no ready-made diapers, and three men doing the best they know how to care for the infants. She is torn between doing what needs to be done and keeping her heart out of the equation.

“Having your heart broken isn’t an easy thing to recover from.”

The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. The Givens offer a temporary home to the triplets, who they end up naming, Conner, Gage, and Vella. Cynara is a great fit and is wonderful with the babies; they are thriving on her milk and attention. But, trouble is brewing—a new ranch hand is causing issues—cattle is missing—and a neighbor’s daughter is insistent that she and Barclay are getting married. The story has mystery, suspense, life and death danger, kidnapping, but also good people doing the right thing and two people falling in love. Cynara never dreamed she would find love again, and Barclay wasn’t looking, but as these two get to know each other, it is inevitable.

“Two of the traits she loved in him were thoughtfulness and keen insight.”

You can't help but fall into love with the three Givens brothers. When a young woman arrives at their house pregnant and in labor they take her in and help deliver triplets. The mother leaves in the night and the brothers are left to deal with the babies. I loved the strong characters of the brothers, particularly Barkley. The story moved smoothly and all characters were integrated in a way to make them easily a part of the story. A thoroughly enjoyable story.

While the premise of the story was a bit far fetched, (triplets born naturally and prematurely to a 15 year old with poor prenatal care, AND all surviving in that day and age), the characters were interesting . I loved how the cowboys fell in love with the babies. The only reason I docked one star is that it could have been better edited. Word omissions and poor grammar were distracting. More research into the birth of multiples would have given more credence to the story. Any natural multiple births I have attended, the babies came first and then the placenta(s). They usually all grow together so you can’t differentiate where one begins and the other ends.

Ms. Raddon did a wonderful job of recreating old west scenes and characters. I loved Barclay and his brothers, who took in Minnie, a frightened young girl, and delivered her triplets. Unfortunately, Minnie soon ran away from her triple responsibilities and left the young men to figure out what to do with the babies. Of course, they fell in love with the adorable kids. They were fortunate to find a young widow, Cynara, who had lost her own baby, to wet nurse the triplets. As they dealt with babies, ranch catastrophes, and an attempted baby-napping, Barclay and Cynara fell in love. The romance development was sweet and believable. I'll be looking for Ms. Raddon's next offering.

This is an enjoyable tale, obviously filled with babies and the wet nurse who comes to care for them. The bad guy is definitely bad and adds excitement to the tale.

The story itself is good but there are too many continuity mistakes. At one point a whole chapter has been repeated. Needs severe editing.
