Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This was a lot of fun to write and I sincerely hope you have as much fun reading it.  This was a quiet year in history and it took some digging to find the battle of Maida, but when I did and saw Sir Sidney Smith was there Marty just had to take part.  How the battle unfolded is as close to the actual battle as I could make it, I just injected Marty and the boys to make it a story.  The yarn around Prince George and the recovery of the lost items is pure fiction as is the counter espionage mission in Malta.  The end of this boom, as usual, sets up the next one nicely.

About the Author

Dog loving history buff with an overactive imagination, I live in The Netherlands with my wife, two dogs and cat.  I have been an avid reader of fighting sail and fantasy and love a good spy story so when I mix all that up with a bit of me and some family history we end up with The Dorset Boy.  I write for me and am constantly amazed that other people want to read my books.  I am trying hard to improve the quality and accuracy as I move forward and have learnt a lot in the last few years.

The story is well told, tightly written, but there are a number of places where the wrong word is used. For example, " he rung his hands" his hands are bells? There are many of these through all six books, interruptions that throw me back to my world instead of Marty's. A good editor would make all the difference. Other than that, highly recommended. Enjoy!

Little ships and pure audacity of the flotilla’s guns turn a French third rate to shards while the Admirals smile.

Our main character and supporting cast have a multitude of intriguing assignments and Mr. Tubbs does a Yeoman's job of keeping the reader engrossed in the storyline. Lots of familiar faces and the book is most definitely worth a read! Well done indeed!!

The plot of the book fits the remarkable events of the earlier Dorset Boy series, but the poor editing is a distraction. Commas seem to be strewn about randomly; a lot of run-on sentences, and confusion of pronouns. Then homonyms are rampant: straight/strait, site/sight, court mashal.

Both the sailing detail and the detailed description of life during those times...down to description of meals...is beautifully done. Loved the humor as well.

A story-line that continues the nautical theme with a hero whose exploits, successes, promotions and accumulation of wealth beggar belief. The tale is so well told, however, and the hero sufficiently likeable to be able to suspend that belief and simply enjoy the read. This series is a thoroughly engaging one with very few flaws, two of which being repetitious spelling errors and the brevity of each volume.

Never a dull moment with Marty & his shadows.
Have found that you have invented a new type of coin of the realm!!!
    Namely a silver guinea!!!!!

If you could change the the with SILVER into HALF it would make sence
Guineas are always minted in gold!!!!!
They were superseded in 1816 by the pound coin we know today
This does not put me off trading further episodes
