- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2020This is my first-time reading Author Flossie Benton Rogers. Seraphina is a compelling character developed early in the story to successfully gain reader empathy. I related to the imagery painted by words in my mind’s eye and the sensations felt by the character when she initially tried the spell.
“Holding the sheet of paper between her chin and chest, Seraphina reached inside the magical bag to feel inside. Dry, thank Goddess. Shaking the paper in the air, she folded it carefully and placed it in the bag. She refused to give up her quest to gain Nemani’s favor. Failure was not an option. Tired and disoriented, she decided to try the spell again tomorrow night.
The beach glinted in the starlight, and she made her way up a low incline before another wave of dizziness swept over her. Maybe sitting down for a moment would help. On dry land. Then she’d get up and find her bag and shoes. She knew she had left them right in plain sight. They had to be here. She sank down to the earth, sweeping pebbles and sharp rocks from beneath her, and tucking her feet beneath the long folds of her skirt. She was overcome by the excitement of her undertaking.”
Traveling to a different time stunned Seraphina. She succeeded where she thought she failed. Luckily, she meets Aedar, a formidable enemy, yet protector from other men from his camp. A mesmerizing tale unfolds as Seraphina tries to plan for options to save herself while Aedar focuses on controlling her fate. The flames of desire grow between the protector and prisoner when they are attacked again. Even with their roles reversed to a degree, Seraphina is trying to save her life and remain with Aedar.
The world is well described and picturesque. The main characters are well-developed and likable. Recommended for young adults and above who enjoy an unlikely romance, magic, and time-travel layered with secrets that need to be revealed. Thrilling spicy scenes too! I did not feel like I missed anything by not starting with book 1, but I will be reading more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2019If you like time travel, romance, and intrigue then this is the book for you. Seraphina travels back in time, meets and alls in love with Aedar who is the king's son. This is a well-written story with strong characters. The descriptions of the scenery, each character, and events brought the book to life.
I look forward to reading more of the author's books.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2020Right off the bat I knew I was in trouble when I encountered words never heard of before like Fomor, Tuath Alliance and Firbolg. I did learn that these words represent an Irish mythical supernatural race of folks. I am okay with learning something new. I do understand that mythical writing takes on mythical vocabulary. What I’m not okay with is having to look up seldom used words in the dictionary when all you have to do is speak plain easy-to-read words that are easily understood. Looking up words take away from the flow of the read and in my personal opinion, it’s not necessary. Example: “Fetters.” Does anyone know the meaning of the word? It’s a chain used to restrain a prisoner. Why not just say chain? Obsidian, reconnoiter, subterfuge, lassitude, and so on.
This phrase was used and I wasn’t sure what the author was saying or if it was a mistake - … another think coming.
I had to look up this phrase … “palmed her athame” and this did not make the read easy.
The main character, Seraphina, trying to find the time singer, Nemani, stumbled into another realm without understanding how she got there or even knowing where she was at. She had abilities that she was not readily familiar with. She runs right into a warrior and develops an intense attraction to him. She, on the other hand, is mistaken for the time singer, Nemani, and her life is in great danger because of it. Aedar, the warrior ends up becoming her protector and they fall in love while trying to find a way to be together forever. In the end, love finds a way and she exercise all of her powers (that she didn’t know she had) to be with her lover. I also would have liked to have gotten to know some of the characters around her on a deeper level.
I give it 3 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2020I have read the earlier books of this series and found this one just as thrilling and interesting.
Seraphina, the protagonist is of the Witch’s breed. As a Witch, she could invoke supernatural powers. This is what she did in her quest to become a Time Singer, and her invocation took her to another realm. Things became quite complicated in this new realm with her life constantly in danger.
It was in this realm that she encountered Aedar who started off as a foe but ended as a lover.
The story started rather slow, but by the middle of the story the events quickened, and the end was almost a rush! I could feel areas in the story that sounded like an afterthought.
On the whole, this was an entertaining read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2019The world-building of Wytchfae is beautifully complex and detailed, with a rich tapestry of magic and politics. In fact, it is so well-rendered that it leads me to my only complaint: that the world-building seemed at times to over-shadow the romance, leaving it occasionally seeming as a just side-note to the plot.
But regardless, the writing is fluid and easy to read, the characters engaging, and together they form a beautifully entertaining and original story.
