Garnet's Gift: Christian historical romance (Carrie Town Texas Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 188 ratings

Twenty-two-year-old Garnet Adams longs to marry and have a houseful of children. Forced to support her widowed mother, she embraces her role as a teacher, although the Carrie Town board of education's rules for female teachers leave no opportunity for a social life. She contents herself playing the violin at church.

Tall, bearded, and rough around the edges, Deputy Noah Scott would rather hunt than socialize. Garnet thinks he’s a rude, insensitive drifter, and Noah's sure the last person he'd want to court is a schoolmarm--especially with her unladylike sneeze. As the needs of her students bring them together, opposites seem to attract until a certain Christmas present derails their future.

From the Author

In my first novel Rebecca's Hope, I introduced a western town in the late 19th century filled with colorful characters and innovative young women. Garnet's Gift is a continuation of the tale and includes characters initially introduced in subsequent stories, such as Emma's Dream, Lois's Risk, Maggie's Strength and Carol's Choice.   Twenty-two-year old Garnet Adams longs to marry and have a houseful of children. Forced to support her widowed mother, she embraces her role as a teacher, although the Carrie Town board of education's rules for female teachers leave no opportunity for a social life. Another Novella in the Carrie Town Series. They all can be read as standalone books. This is a story about Garner Adams who comes to town to be a teacher. She finds that there are many rules to follow that are given at the beginning of each chapter. It reminded me of my aunt's who taught also at this time in history. What a charming story of this teacher , her children, church and the friends she meets. It has a deputy who helps her out quite a bit even with her teaching on stormy day. It has some bible verses, songs and even a wives tale that added some humor to this delightful story. I hope you enjoy this novella as much as I did. I purchased this book when it was on sale. All the words are strictly my own.

I loved this book in audio version! The narrator’s voice picked up all the different nuances of the various characters. The author engaged me, making me feel like I was right there with Garnet and the children in the classroom during the storm or walking alongside Noah at dusk. For a while, I could see the 1890 western town in Texas and was introduced to endearing friends. I empathized with Garnet’s disappointment and found the plot twists entertaining. I highly recommend this book, whether in audio or another format, and other books by this author.

Another delightful must-read story from Kimberly Grist. She heads her book chapters with sayings or scriptures. In this book, it was rules for teachers. Based on real rules from the past, I wondered as I read them if I ever could have survived as a teacher. The characters were great. The author included several kids say the darnedest things type quips. My favorite came from the nativity play rehearsal. Must read the book for that one alone. Sweet romance with such a believable heroine and hero, their romance woven in with a great tale of the true message of Christmas.

Garnet is a school teacher who must work to help support her mother and her aunt. Every chapter begins with one of the rules for schoolmarms, which I found fascinating.

Noah is the deputy in town. He isn’t interested in settling down, and especially not with a straight-laced school teacher. But Garnet surprises him because she is very different from what he had expected.

This is a tender romance that gently moves along. There isn’t a lot of tension until about the fourteenth chapter. It’s a sweet story that has a romantic ending readers will enjoy.
