Cheryl R. Lane was born and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, and went to college at East Tennessee State University before marrying her high school sweetheart and moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia. She started writing as a hobby when she was in college after purchasing a couple of Southern Heritage cookbooks, which were filled with pages of beautiful old plantation homes. She used to sit outside in her backyard and type on a manual typewriter at a picnic table under tall maple trees.  She continued writing after moving to Virginia Beach and visiting beautifully restored homes in Williamsburg as well as plantations on the James River. Her day job has been working as a medical transcriptionist for 30 years and now as a legal transcriptionist while writing on the side. She finally decided to self-publish her first book in December 2012, and she enjoys the freedom and creativity of self-publishing.  She loves being outside in nature and her hobbies include visiting historical homes and gardens, reading, traveling, and exercising.  She is still married to her sweetheart after 30 years, and they have one son. Definitely a Voyage of the Heart!!!

Definitely a Voyage of the Heart!!!
This is the first book in Cheryl R. Lane’s “The Wellington Patriot” series. Cheryl’s books are always adorably romantic and carefully researched. Her eye for historical detail is absolutely outstanding. Cheryl describes the times and places of this book in a perceptible way. With her vivid descriptions, the reader immediately gains a sense of being in the actual story! Cheryl gives stunning glimpses actually going beyond visual images by using smells, sounds, tastes and feels. The author’s dialogue definitely reflects social context. Cheryl is very familiar with how people spoke during the time period especially the accents. She also makes sure the characters are “real” to the reader. They have weaknesses as well as strengths. So, with that being said, here is why you definitely should read this book (and series)! Baldwin Wellingon is the handsome, privileged son of Lord Alden Wellington and grew up in England. He was ostracized from his noble family by a series of events and crimes (some of which he didn’t commit). With his punishment, he is being sent to the British Colonies in North America to become a servant for seven years. Bronwyn Kerrigan is a beautiful Irish-Scots lass (see cover), who due to family events, must take an indentureship with Lord Fairfax in the Virginia Colony. Baldwin and Bronwyn meet each other on the ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean and are immediately drawn to each other. Surprise, Surprise - this book even has pirates!!! Let the adventures and conflicts begin as you read this incredibly written book!!! I can’t wait to see what happens in Book 2 of the series. Do yourself a favor! Read!!!

I have been looking for a book to read and this hit the spot. This book is an adventurous love story about Bronwyn an Irish/Scottish young lady sent to the colonies after her father’s death. Bronwyn finds herself falling in love during her adventurous journey of storms, pirates and sickness aboard the Voyager. I recommend this book for a pleasant read to take you away from your day to day.

Bronwyn does not wish to marry the man chosen for her so decides to go the colonies. 7 yrs as a housekeeper for Lord Fairfax. On the ship she helps care for sick and hurt as she is trained by her father before he passed in plants, herbs and oils . She helps Baldwin and they become good friends, ultimately falling in love. Will they see each other again after the voyage?
Great historical and love story, can't wait for book 2.

Baldwin Wellington was born to a prosperous English family from Wellingshire England, but his life wasn't a happy one. His parents blamed him for their tragedy. He misbehaved to gain their attention. I hated to see him race to his destruction. Now he's on a ship to the Colonies as punishment for his crimes. He doesn't realize that redemption awaits him. Bronwyn Kerrigan is a talented Irish healer. After her father's death, her mother is forced to send her to Virginia as an indentured servant. I admired Bronwyn's courage. She's embarking on a perilous journey, but it's her only option. When Baldwin and Bronwyn meet, their connection is immediate. I knew they were fated to be together. I was happy. They were perfect together. I could tell that her gentle spirit would help Baldwin become a better person. Unfortunately Rowena Thorowgood, a victim of Baldwin's thieving, is on the voyage. It was hard to like this stubborn, selfish woman. She's spoiled and willful. I liked how these three find their lives intertwined. How will it end? I had to know. I couldn't stop reading Voyage of the Heart. Cheryl R. Lane has written a exciting and romantic story. The characters are vibrant and alive. I cared for them and wanted them to find happiness. This book is well written and left me with a happy feeling. I can't wait for the next story in The Wellington Patriot series.

This could have been a great story However, there were many discrepancies. A young woman, Irish or not, would never have been allowed to travel alone without a chaperone right up to the 1900s. She would not have been able to cure people on the ship in the dreadful unsanitary conditions of the time. The young man being sent to the colonies as a convict would have been kept below deck and never allowed to mix with the passengers. Not enough understanding of the times and needed more research.

Voyage of the Heart concerns a young Irish healer who chooses to come to the US after her father dies & her mother moves back to Scotland. The lead characters, Bronwyn and Baldwin, are drawn quite nicely and usually acted in accordance with my expectations, though I found Rowena less consistent in her actions. Most of the minor characters, with the exception of Bronwyn's Granny, lacked depth for me.

The plot wasn't too complicated, and it had a few twists that were unexpected, a few that were fairly unbelievable, and one or two that I felt were thrown in just to add spice. I personally saw the ending coming far before its time.

The thing I had most trouble with was the writing style. There were passages that struck me as quite brilliant, while others read as if it were a middle grade novel. I'm one of those people who enjoys dialectical writing, but the repetition of certain words like "wee" and "och", and the interchanging of "ye" and "you" within a character's single dialogue passage, I found quite annoying. And showing up here and there were some very modern phrases like "Oh, yeah?" and "How far can we go?" (eg: sex) that pulled me right out of the story. And when the MMC tooks time out of "pummeling his fists into (bad guy's) face" to ask FMC if she's all right... well, I confess I laughed out load.

Overall, if you're looking for a light read and aren't too fussy about historic details, you may enjoy engaging with the main characters. I did really like them, and I was glad things seemed to work out for them.

It's been quite a while since I read a book that really held my attention.
It has romance, intrigue and pirates! I can't wait for book 2 so I can see what mischief Bronwyn and Baldwin get themselves into next. If you enjoy historical romance I strongly urge you to give this book a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.

This, overall, is a good book. Some of it, like the part about pirates, reminds me of children's stories. It not bad though, I think you will like it.
