A Top Shelf Awards Nominee. "Loving the traditional Scottish Historical spiked with Fantasy...well played Crosby," says Whiskey and Wit Book Reviews

Sometimes, love is all the magic you need...
Fearing her "gifts" will be used to defeat her sister Matilda, Elspeth Pendragon escapes the Black Mountain priory that has sheltered her and her sisters since their father's death, only to find herself indebted to, of all men, a Scotsman, whose loyalties are in question...

Left to face the wrath of a new sovereign, Malcom Scott is forced to swear fealty to Stephen of Blois to keep the castle he won by slaying his own grandfather. But having done that, he's pitted himself against Scotia, and even his own sire. But even as he realizes there's no turning back, the late King's favorite illegitimate daughter may offer him more than he ever anticipated.

This is a well crafted story, but with a big flaw. There are so many characters thrown at the reader in the first couple chapters that it's a bit overwhelming. A prologue with a brief whose who and family trees would have been much easier to follow than seemingly random thoughts. The story gets bogged down with the relentless mulling over the past and especially when it becomes painfully obvious that this is the author's clumsy way of setting the stage. This had the opportunity to be an epic story but it was good for a quick afternoon read. I'm hoping the next two books have more story and less staging.

The story moves slow at first and is a bit boring. I guess the author was setting up the characters for the Avalon series. But the ending was really good .

Great Audible Narration by Marian Hussey

I think I've read all (or very nearly all) of Tanya's books. I don't understand the one star review other than that individual stated it was their "first" book by this author and they didn't care for the style. Fortunately, not everyone agrees! Ms. Crosby is so creative and has an amazing imagination and I'm glad to go along for the ride.

The Daughters of Avalon are dewine ("good" witches), using their "magick" for good, but not for evil. This story is the first in the series about the oldest daughter, Elsbeth. There are 5 sisters, all bastard daughters of King Henry (now deceased), whose mother has embraced the dark side of her powers and uses them to appear much younger than she is, gather power, and destroy anyone (including her daughters) that she perceives are in her way. With the encouragement of her sisters, Elsbeth escapes and "finds" her champion, Malcom (the young boy that was kidnapped in Crosby's book, "The MacKinnon's Bride", and the sweet version of that book, "Page") in the fog.

If you like romance and "magick", you'll love this book...

I absolutely love these books! I'm actually reading the fourth book in the series at the moment. Wonderful exciting adventures, set in the turbulent times of 12th century Scotland, England and Wales! Great heroes, who are strong and handsome, passionate and always honorable. The stories focus on 5 sisters, all beautiful, talented daughter's of the goddess ,with mystical powers, all desperate to escape their evil mother and to protect the kingdom and all that they love. Wonderful escapism, I'm only sorry that there are only 4 books in the series!

Reviewed in Canada on March 9, 2020
Initially, I found the book hard to get into because of the number of characters and alliances introduced, but as the story progressed I found myself increasingly entertained. Morwen's black magic and incestuous relationship was off-putting, and reminded me somewhat of the 1980's movie Excalibur. Would be interested in finding out what happens with the remaining daughters of Avalon.
