4.5 out of 5 stars 2,770 ratings

It’s winter 1807 and Marty gets some rare home time, but he isn’t allowed to rest peacefully the French have it in for him and Napoleon has placed a huge reward on his head, dead or alive. Unable to get to him directly they try and use his family as leverage resulting in a daring rescue and the uncovering of a mole in the Foreign Office. Then he joins up with Sidney Smith and gets involved in the rescue of the Portuguese royal family when the French invade. Hood gets him involved with Thomas Cochrane, possibly the most successful of all the frigate captains, at the Battle of Basque Roads and he discovers that even success cannot protect you against the political powers that be if you cross the wrong man. The story concludes with another trip to the Indian Ocean and another conflict with the French Intelligence Service.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This was an interesting book to research and write.  Thomas Cochrane, the source of many fighting sail authors inspiration, pops up in the Bay of Biscay to take on the French Fleet at the Basque roads.  What I didn't know before this was he was hamstrung by an Admiral who was in a snit because he was overruled by the admiralty and went on to challenge him in a court martial only to lose and effectively end his career with the Navy for the rest of the Napoleonic way.  The Admiral, Gambier, went on to become Admiral of the Fleet. There is no justice in this world.  He also gets involved with Sidney Smith again and helps the Portuguese aristocracy to escape to Brazil, where they gave the gift of STDs and small pox to the natives.  As usual all the locations and events are factual just the Marty part is fantasy.

I enjoy the sprinkling of historical figures that Marty interacts with like Arthur Wellesley, Field Marshall Soult, Horatio Nelson. Admiral Hood, Prince George, and others. The only nit I pick is that the proofreading needs help. As a retired English prof, I find the errors a bit annoying. Nevertheless, the naval and historical research, and the author's imagination, make these books a good read.

For those who haven’t read this series, Christopher Tubbs’ tales of adventure of a young boy growing into a man are well-written and full of excitement. The main character is Martin Stockley, a member of a poor English family at the beginning of the Napoleonic Era. Martin joins the British Navy as a ship’s boy/captain’s assistant steward. The ship’s captain, brother to the teacher in Stockley’s village, takes a liking to the hard-working lad and rewards his loyalty with training and advancement.
Tubbs follows Martin and his growth from a shy young lad to a determined officer in the king’s navy. All the while he is followed by a small group of loyal sailors (the shadows) who not only protect him but also help him as he goes about singeing Napoleon’s beard and confounding the French Intelligence Service.
This series is well worth the time to read and enjoy. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Marty is still involved in the intelligence field. Part time assassin, part time politician and full time Navy Man. Blaez is getting older and has earned domestic retirement. His blood line continues in his pup Troy who is very bit the protector his father was on ship. Great read. Next!

Hero does make mistakes, those around him do get hurt, just as he does.
Enjoy the notes, both historical and personal.

I must confess that I have loved these sailing ship sagas since since I discovered Hornblower in the late 50's. The protagonist must be daring, inventive, at least somewhat at odds with his superiors and shy (with shadings of the old military meaning) around women. The conventions even carryover into science fiction with Honor Harrington and company.

Marty Stockley fits well in the established mold with enough variations and idiosyncrasies to avoid "just another" criticism. His linguistic abilities alone are unusual and allow extra plot twists.

This book meets the standards established by the prior six volumes: interesting plot, action , twists and a full cast of the usual characters, especially Marty's wife who is unusual, as usual.

A few errors in spelling or use of the correctly spelled word for the context and a very few junction mistakes but in general, a descriptive exciting read. Glad to see more words to the page and longer chapters.

The continuation of a ripping nautical yarn, easy to read as it flows well, despite occasionally descending into the English Boys Own genre. The editor has still missed a few errors but by and large the grammar & spelling has improved with each volume. Could still do with being longer! An excellent one-session (or maybe two) read.
