The Perfect Gift Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 97 ratings

Macy has a secret.

It's Christmas 1963, and Macy Lance has it all. She'll soon graduate from a prestigious southern college. A position in a top pharmaceutical firm waits for her. Best of all, Jonathan Tennent has proposed. Jonathan is not only the love of her life, he's the son of Macon, Georgia's wealthiest and most prominent family, heir to Tennent Pharmaceuticals.

All would be perfect except Macy isn't the woman Jon thinks she is. No one suspects her persona of an affluent college co-ed is a charade. She must tell Jon the truth by Christmas Eve, but before then, she searches for a gift to rival the engagement ring Jon is giving her, and convince his society-obsessed mother she is good enough for her only son.

Despite his family's objections, Jon is determined to make Macy his wife. Then he discovers the one thing that can destroy their future.

The Perfect Gift is a heart-warming story that is set during Christmas, but can be enjoyed anytime of the year. I finished it as Spring was beginning. The book is set in the early 60s, a time period I experienced as a child, but know very little about as an adult. Cultural references, actual events, and slang effectively evoked the era. I felt for Macy who struggled with secrets she felt made her different and less worthy than other people. At times idealistic, she hopes for better things, then subconsciously sabotages the opportunities. I cheered for her as she attempts to reconcile herself with the past. Jon is charming, and as the son of a well-to-family seems surprised when life isn’t as easy for others as it is for him. He genuinely cares for Macy, and the conflict about her with his parents is realistic. (Something that still happens today.) Ms. Manders is a great author, and as expected, I enjoyed the story. Even though the book is a novella, the plot progression does not feel rushed. Highly recommended.

This is a true to life romance set during the 1960’s. The struggles Jon and Macy faced with their relationship were realistic with their upbringing being totally opposite. Macy kept secrets of her dysfunctional family and struggles but had succeeded to be a top pharmaceutical student with a position in a renowned research lab. Jon’s father owned the company, but there were issues his mother would not let go of with Macy. As Christmas approached the relationship grew with hidden secrets being revealed to bring healing, restored faith, forgiveness and new beginnings for several. The Perfect Gift is a beautiful story of God’s love shining through and historical facts of our country during the 1960’s. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more books by Manders.

I found it very hard to connect with the characters in this story. Macy is hard to feel anything toward. I can't fathom why Jon has fallen in love with her, when he admittedly knows very little about her, but is keen on marrying her because of how she makes him feel. (Is that lust talking that he doesn't care much about who she really is?)

As another reviewer noted, there are editorial issues with the book as well, but the ending is lovely. Many books start out with a strong start and fizzle out toward the end. This one did the exact opposite. I almost stopped reading it a few times, but it's a short, quick and easy read, so I kept going. The end made up for the weak start in many ways, but raised its own questions. How could Mrs. Tennant go from caring so much about what other people thought to caring so little?

While the end was satisfying, none of the characters felt truly believable and the repetition definitely was a bit much.

Jon loves Macy, but, his mother feels that she is keeping secrets from him. He plans to marry her in June - if she will say yes that is. Macy loves Jon more than she ever thought she could love another person. When he surprises her with a proposal at the bus stop of all places she is completely overwhelmed. With her ride, Esther coming down the road she says yes and he quickly kisses her and allows her to go to work. What happens next will surprise and bring tears to your eyes. Is Macy really the type of person that Jon's mother think she is? Read this wonderful story from Elaine Manders to find out.

Chemist and college student Macy Lance has to make peace with her past or lose the man she loves. Will social expectations and personal guilt once again come between her bright future and the ones she holds dear? Follow as Macy discovers the perfect gift at Christmastime.

I enjoyed this interesting glimpse into 1960s culture, showing how the struggles then were different yet in many ways the same. The story pacing is great, though some of the character goals and motivations seemed a tad foggy at times and a few words were used out of context. Also, I would have liked more of the five senses woven into the story other than the hero/heroine’s cologne and the heat of their attraction. Seeing some oldies song titles was fun. The unique details of the Chinese cook and housemaid as well as spot-on characterization of the socialite mother-in-law-to-be make this story unique and carry the reader back in time.

Just finished this book and I want to say it was a page turner. Wholesome reading that included an awesome love story, riches, poverty, suspense, charity, almost all I like in a book was in this book. I wanted it to last longer.

The whole story seems built upon lies Macy has allowed her life to become. She does good things from questionable motives. Jonathan sounds like a lovely guy from a well-to-do family. His dad is much like him. The mother has serious reservations as she senses the unstated in Macy's presentation. Given that this is a Christian book, i kept waiting for the "shoe to drop" as it were. Instead, everything turns out better than perfect. Surprisingly. It's a good read if you can deal with the tension of the hidden lies.

I just wasn't able to connect with the characters and the story line. I'm glad it was such a short book so I was able to finish it since I needed it for several challenges.

I'm sure many readers will be able to enjoy this sweet historical romance though it wasn't for me :-(
