- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2020This book has it all! At a time when authors are being pigeonholed into specific genres, AnneMarie Dapp had the wherewithal to say not so fast... This book is history meets hero's journey with a slice of mystery, a sprinkling of fantasy, and an under crust of budding love, not just for the main characters, but the supporting characters as well. Americans have forgotten the history and may have never really embraced the incredible courage of the pioneers who settled the West. This book is both educational and liberatingly transformative. The writing takes on a descriptive nature that literally brings the characters and story to life. Dapp is a talented writer with the descriptive skill of a L'Amour but in a voice of a writer who knows exactly where she wants to take her audience. Confidently written & expressed!
Brilliant writing!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021Prairie Ghosts is a lovely and well researched story that chronicles the journey of Cat Brennen as she joins a wagon train heading west from Nebraska in the 1850’s. Shane Mackenzie, a long time friend, is a wrangler with the group who has loved Cat forever and now wants to see that she’s safe.
Plagued by strange and frightening nightmares, she struggles to understand why the visions are so familiar. Little does she realize that the life she knew was not the only life she had lived. A cast of interesting characters, including some colorful “ladies of the night” and a young raven with a broken wing that Cat rescues, adds depth, mystery and color to the story.
Seamless and well paced, this author has brought her story and characters to a fulfilling conclusion which, as all love stories do, brings Cat and Shane together, loving one another forever. A very pleasant read!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2020This is the grit that formed our United States. Yes, this story reminds us that love makes things happen. The love between a man and a woman, the kindness of neighbors, the strength of newly formed communities.
It was a heartwarming read to meet this brave young woman, her stalwart hero, and the variety of personalities woven within this 'historical quilt'.
Their journey is a gamble, keeping one's values and wits were a daily battle, it was the drama that kept me turning the pages..
This is a story told with heart, displaying the kindness and treachery some were willing to express to get to their destination.
This is an inspirational tale told by a heartwarming Author. Looking forward to the rest of the series

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2020"Prairie Ghosts", by Annemarie Dapp, is a Delightful novel filled with pages of romance, intrigue, and mystery along the Oregon, California trails.
This book is filled with pleasant surprises and storylines from such variety of characters. Some that were gritty, and some with honor, ethics, bravery, inner strength. I give this book a five stars! I can't wait for the sequel! (C.De Vito)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2020I started this book on a whim suffering from random covid/apocalypse-induced boredom and could barely put it down until I’d finished the whole thing. Now I’m anxiously awaiting the rest of the series. I was transfixed by the ideas and attitudes explored in this book by the incredible characters as they made their way west. The romance was stirring (*cough*), but I also found it to be incredibly well researched and I learned a lot more than I had expected. I’m usually a science fiction reader mainly, but despite the complete lack of aliens and robots, I had a great time on this journey with Cathy and her unlikely tribe of travelers. 10/10 would recommend. Fun, uplifting, tense, sensual, adventurous, and a pleasure to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dull writing, bored to tears.
Cathy sets out on the Oregon Trail amidst various characters, one being wrangler Shane. The story in itself is a fair read, but it lacks convict and emotion. As the reader, I got no sense of emotion as I read about her setting bones, digging for roots for an aid to save lives or indeed delivering a baby.
Instead I read with a state of boredom. How could this young, innocent girl set bones or know when a mother giving birth is fully dilated? Would parents accept without rancour, agitation or argument that their son fell in love with another man on the trail and set up home with him? All and more, but without any passion in the writing.
Supposedly a love story, but Shane' s character is lifeless while Cathy somehow conquers all. Sorry but this story left me bored and wishing I had never started it.
