Lately Lesbian Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Good Southern girls follow the rules and walk down predictable paths. Jenna predictably married Paul and believed in happily ever after. Although Jenna played by all the rules, she had no idea the tragic turns that her life would take--the tragic death of her first baby, and the unexpected loss of a second baby. There would be more heartbreak. Would Jenna ever be blessed with a child that she wanted with all her heart? Would Paul step up and become the husband and partner she only dared to dream of? Jenna needed the support of her husband, his sympathetic shoulder to cry on, and strong arms to hold her, but he cast an absentee ballot most of the time.
Then out of the blue, Jenna crossed paths with a young woman and her life changed in ways that she never could have imagined. For too many years, Jenna drifted through life searching for answers to understand her undeniable attraction to this woman and uncover her true authentic self. Denial reigned supreme until one phone call changed everything.

Lately Lesbian by J.D. Simmons is an interesting memoir with lesbian themes. Jenna marries Paul and believes that she's found the man of her life. She is the normal, traditional wife, living for her husband and looking forward to stability in the future. When her life is rocked, she looks towards her husband for support. But Paul is distant and aloof. That is until Jenna meets a young and beautiful woman. As her longing begins to grow, she starts feeling different. Has she always masked her real feelings? Is she made to be with a man or is there a deeper, a more real part of her that she must allow to emerge? Follow her love odyssey as she journeys home to herself, redefining herself, and giving a name to her deepest desires and passions.

This is an interesting story that explores the theme of romance and a woman's journey to accepting and embracing herself. J.D. Simmons doesn't just write well; she also has a gift for listening to her heart and this aspect of the writing makes it easy for readers to relate to her, to understand her world, and see clearly the path she's walked. The memoir is filled with lessons on inner freedom and authenticity, a story that shows readers how social norms and conventions can keep us prisoners of a culture that doesn't serve us any longer. The writing is confident and the narrative voice consistent and clarion. Lately Lesbian is engrossing and I enjoyed the way the author explores the landscapes of her heart, becoming vulnerable in the narrative and infusing it with humanity and realism.

From the Author

Lately Lesbian is Jenna's story and I know it well because it is my true story. I lived the minutes, days and years of her life. For 33 years I wore the mask of a happily married woman, and in doing so, nearly sacrificed myself.
My story is a love story like so many others and unlike so many others. As a young woman, I wanted a loving husband, children, and a home. I wanted what my parents had.
Jenna will walk you down the path of my life and the events leading up to my marriage-ending affair. Through her eyes you will experience my secret desires and worst fears. Her heart will mirror the exhilaration and hope of a new and soulful love that filled my heart. In the end, you will believe in the power of holding onto the hope of finding everlasting love, no matter your age or circumstances, because you deserve it. Holding onto hope is indeed the beginning of making it happen.

This is a story of self-discovery, sexuality and love. Jenna marries and has two beautiful children, hoping for a long, happy married life. She struggles to live up to her own expectations of being a mother and a wife, and then someone comes along that makes her question her sexuality, and her whole world is turned upside down.

There were so many parts of this story that made me feel like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. The writing style was amazing, and hearing about the death of her first child, and the premature birth of her second baby killed me. She expressed her emotions so perfectly in the writing from beginning the end about the marriage, her affair, and her love for her two children Andrew and Brook.

Her love for her partner Jesse was so obvious and translates wonderfully on the page. I was routing for them the entire time and hoped for a happy ending. Luckily they got one, and Jenna wrote her story for the world to read.

Stepping into a world unknown to those who have never been on a journey of self discovery, Lately Lesbian is a life guide. A story, a past, a future that will leave the reader not wanting to stop flipping the pages. Jenna’s journey through life and it’s sometimes associated challenges reminds us all that we are all human and different, even special in our own ways. Life can be tough but JD Simmons reminds us that life still goes on and we must embrace each day anew. Grab life by the horns and steer it the way WE want.

Easily relatable in so many ways, this book is more than just a story by an incredible writer. This book is about discovering who you are as an individual, living under altruistic cultural norms of the south and being brave enough to tell society and family “no” to live one’s true self. A must-read for anyone but especially those who are struggling with self-identity and what living their true authentic self looks and feels like.

A story of coming to terms with your sexuality and discovering who you are as a person. #BraveWrite

This book was filled with heartbreaking moments that had me reaching for the tissues, yelling at the characters (though this is a memoir - it feels very story-like), and cackling aloud (especially at the bats)!

    *SPOILER ALERT*
It is a tale of a woman's desperate struggle for happiness. She finds a certain type of happiness with her family (her children to be more specific)... and then... many, many years later, she finally finds/accepts love. It is 100% comparable to the story of Francesca from "The Bridges of Madison County," but thankfully, this time... this Francesca (Jenna) gets out of the car and runs to her soulmate.
The whole time, you root for the author, but you also see her tip-toeing her line of morality - the struggle was real - well done!

A real page turner! I couldn't put it down! I cried (and I mean cried), laughed, cheered and applauded! A true account of life's trials and tribulations, a woman's unbelievable strength and FAITH through adversity. The author went through more than her fair share of pain and heartache, she especially needed to feel loved and appreciated. Whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, you shouldn't have to ever try to guess if your spouse/partner truly cares about you. I loved this book because it made me think deeply, and a reminder to all of us that life is very hard, but the gifts/blessings we receive are too numerous to count. From a 100% heterosexual, we cannot condemn anyone for the person they choose to love!

A Standing Ovation of Applause for J D Simmons for being vulnerable and sharing her self discovering story of finding true love. The way she describes the turn of events on her journey in life took me through moments of tears, laughter out loud and even anger at some of the situations. If you are trying to come to terms to know that you are worth more than just simple mediocrity, then this is a must read for you! J D Simmons has written a riveting, page turner that you won't be able to put down.

I don’t like nonfiction but read out of my genre from time to time. This was a nonfiction life story and I expected it was going to be tough to get threw because those are two thing I do not like to read.

I read this book in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down. It was an emotional roller coaster, that was very well written. I have not read a book from start to finish in one sitting for years. The author has a real gift of pulling you into their story.

This is a powerful story. It is written quite well and the people that are in this book seem very real. Using the first-person point of view, which is appropriate for a memoir, it describes the struggle the author went through to find a person who would love and cherish her for who she is. This is one of the deepest needs of the human spirit, it is something we all want.
The author does a great job of setting the scene for the events in the story. The dialogue comes across as quite real. She includes enough action to maintain the forward momentum of the story. It kept a good pace for me.
I award 4.8 stars to “Lately Lesbian”.

When I first heard of this book, Lately Lesbian, as an openly gay man, I was wondering what it could mean for me and would I connect with the author. As I turned each page I learned of a courageous woman bold enough to face her truth and live life in her true passion.

Life is so short as we meet others that share a similar journey, we each take a piece of fabric with us to pass it along to others who struggle. JD Simmons, has written a book that will impact generations yet to be born in empowering them to get up everyday and fight for their fabric.

Did I smile, yes, did I cry yes, was I inspired - most definitely! If I could give this book 10 stars I would. It is a must read!
