5 out of 5 stars
The story The Last Keeper of the Light: a dystopian fantasy by Nikki Broadwell is a book that takes you into a world that is post-apocalyptic and the number one goal is to survive. It is a story that had me turning pages to find out what was going to happen next. It grabs your attention from the very beginning and I found myself not wanting to put it down until I had finished reading. The plot is fascinating, and I loved reading about the characters of Sandal and Jacob. Sandal is learning that the world that she lives in is not safe. There is hunger, violence, and those who don’t think twice about harming anyone they meet. The world has become a cruel and brutal place. While Sandal has times when she is fearful, she also shows an amazing strength and ability to survive. Even as doubts creep in she keeps going. Jacob is someone that Sandal finds comforting to have around. He becomes very important to her. I enjoyed reading about them and their interactions with each other. What does the future hold for Sandal and Jacob? Will they be able to stay one step ahead of the danger that is all around them? Read this book to find out. This story has parts that are heartbreaking however there are also parts that are heartwarming. The book is written in such a way that I felt that I was right there with the characters. There are quite a few other characters that are introduced in the story. There are those who are kind and look after others who need help and then there are those who have their own agenda and that I would call just plain evil. This is a story that had me thinking about what I would do if faced with the same situations. It is a book that I enjoyed reading and would recommend to others.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2022This is my first book that I have read by this author. I found the story to be interesting. A very different idea of a dystopian world. I did like Sandal and Jacobs characters and felt I could relate. I did enjoy the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2019I really enjoyed this book! It is definitely a dark, dystopian fantasy where the reader might see parallels in the reasons that civilization had ceased to exist and what is going on in our world today. The way this story is written allows the reader to easily visualize the ruined landscape of that apocalyptic world. It is harsh and filled with danger, from the lack of food and water to other people who steal and kill.
The characters are very well written, especially Sandal and her mother, Betony, who are strong and complex. They kept me interested in their journey, anticipating and dreading what came next. The ending surprised me (which doesn’t generally happen) and left me wondering and hoping that there will be more to come of this story.
I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019I must have “put this down” 4 times before I finished it. The last time I started from the beginning. Once into it, it moved well, but wasn’t compelling. The story gave me pause, considering how our world is progressing. It is a thought-provoking read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Makes you think that's for sure! Will this be the world in our future or our Children and Grandchildren's future? When will people wake up and see what's being done around us? It's a very scary thing to think about but the signs are there. Well thought out so wake up and Smell the Roses before it's too late.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2018The journey Sandal went on through the book was long and disturbing. Mankind today seems to be on that path is destruction. There is hope that mankind will survive the mistakes we are making how-today. I really pray that the world the characters lived through will never make our world ...Their world.

4 out of 5 stars
Dystopian fantasy books are not my normal go to genres, but this post-apocalyptic story had be drawn in and it would not let me go. Fans of The Hunger Games and the Divergent Series will loves this book from author Nikki Broadwell. While it did take me a bit to get use to the back and forth of the narration between past and present,, once I understood what the authors intent was, I feel easily into the pages.
Sandal and Jacob are the two main characters in this story and theirs is both heartwarming and terrifying all at the same time. Sandal is learning that the world around her is a do or die world. The Do is to survive, and survive she must. Survival is not easy. Everyday is a trial, and the people she meets can be described as the devil incarnate. Jacob on the other hand, is her black knight in shining armor. While he isn’t perfect. He is perfectly what she needs. She finds peace, comfort and solace with Jacob. Their relationship grows. By how much, you will have to read the book to find out.
This world is highly detailed and vastly built. Ms Broadwell gives you just enough to allow your imagination to build the rest without overwhelming you too much. The story is fast paced, so you are never bored, yet you are not feeling as if you cannot keep up. I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dystopian fantasy.

The Last Keeper of Light is a wonderful dystopian fantasy by Nikki Broadwell. Ms. Broadwell is a new-to-me author who came to my attention when her book showed up on my feed and the beautiful cover caught my attention. The title also intrigued me, so I read the blurb and knew right away that I would enjoy this story- which I did… The book is very original- and has A Hopi Indian prophecy as the ‘inspiration’ for the storyline. It is very creative and imaginative, with magic, secrets, survival, adventure, danger, drama, and some mysteriousness. Ms. Broadwell creates a vivid, fully realised, and believable world in which she set her story. I was transported into the world, experiencing it along with Sandal (and the others)- watching as everything unfolded.
Sandal is in a post-apocalyptic world, where survival is an hour to hour, day by day ordeal. We are told/shown what’s left of the world after everything is destroyed, the dangers that are faced by the survivors, and the difficulties they face. The world as we know it is no more- the grids are down, and everything has gone dark. Millions have died, either from the initial destruction, or later from the starvation, disease, radiation sickness- or natural disasters that followed. Sandal has a big secret that she must protect at all cost, her ‘mission’ is of paramount importance, and her success is crucial- because she literally has the future of the world in her hands.
There is so much more to the story that just a dystopian/post-apocalyptic survival story…. There is a another ‘layer’ threaded through it- one that speaks of magic, lessons to be learned, and most importantly, of hope.
This story switches back and forth from the past to the present as everything is revealed. These transitions are done quite seamlessly and there is no confusion as to ‘when’ we are in the story, or what is happening.
I also enjoyed the thought-provoking nature of the story and the ‘lessons’ that the book holds. Overall, I am quite impressed by my first foray into Ms. Broadwell’s ‘world’ and I am looking forward to reading more of her works in the future.
Thank you, Ms. Broadwell!

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and riveting read.
This book was incredible and I loved it. It pulled me in from the beginning and kept me absolutely hooked till the end. There are many characters that come and go but our constant is Sandal. We start with her and her family when she is young, and we follow her as she grows. There are moments of anxiety, anger, and deep sadness in this book. It is a must-read!
