Stitches and Threads - a horror story collection: supernatural dark fantasy Kindle Edition
23 Horror Stories
A collection of short stories inverting witchcraft and demonology tropes, bringing you the supernatural, the occult, hauntings, and creatures of the night, each with a different slant. The tales within these pages rip the fabric of our reality, where loose stitches and threads allow us to see, not just in the dark, but into the core of fear, of wonder, and beyond . . . into the void.
Here you will discover tales that include a hangover from hell, a bizarre Easter egg and its nest, a clinical trial in the 1980s, a grandfather's secret that carries down through generations, accidental resurrections across the globe, and many other deep-rooted evils humankind should have kept buried.
Stories include:
'Pile of Dirt' - Recovering from a serious accident, all that's wanted is to relax in the garden. But that isn't going to happen when piles of dirt keep appearing everywhere.
'On the Vine' - Not everyone must enjoy nature.
'The Rebirth' - A primary school teacher's lesson doesn't go to plan after a peculiar Easter egg lands in her possession.
'Dust Devils' - When a driving instructor's pupil fails to turn up for a lesson, he doesn't just drive off. He investigates ... things.
'Welcome Home' - An overseas holiday goes wrong for a pair of best friends.
'Midnight Clay' - A pleasant cycle home is cut short by a demon with a particularly grotesque skill.
'Diagonal Dead' - It's a shame the dead can't stay dead, especially those discovered in a wall cavity.
'A Demon's Thread' - Flash fiction trilogy through the eyes of a demon.
'The Artist and the Crone' - Leo wants a peaceful life, but the ressurection of a 17th-century witch paints a different picture.
Intensive Scare' - Three teenagers dabble in the occult and learn there's a good reason to be afraid of the dark.
'Ten Minutes Till Deadtime' - Balancing work and home life is bad enough, but it's something else entirely to wake each morning by an alarm clock that was never set.
'A Story of Amber' - Two brothers and a grandfather's secret. This is a Halloween story that begins in childhood and ends in adulthood.
'Due South' - Who would think that a hike through the English countryside would leave scars?
'Meeting Mum' - Introducing a new girlfriend to your parents can be problematic.
'Dead Lines' - An artist learns she is not the only one to hold the brush.
'Disturbed' - A camping trip turns sour when a deep-rooted evil awakens.
'Seeing is Believing' - Having laser eye surgery is more than life changing.
'Next on the List' - No one likes changes, least of all an old man with an even older secret.
'The Commission' - A photographer's commission proves to be a pain in the neck.
'Claimed' - In Yellowstone Country Park things are a different colour.
'Demon Alcohol' - Staying at a bed and breakfast in a quaint harbour town, Tammy is not in the mood for uninvited guests. Especially when she's hungover and the guests are not human.
'Red, White and Black' - When a clinical trial goes horribly wrong, a lone survivor finds herself fleeing from a sentient infection.
'A Sunset Companion' - The low October sun can cause road accidents by blinding drivers, yet perhaps there are other causes in the surrounding woodland.
All stories have been previously published in the collections, Sinister Stitches and Terror Threads, as well as anthologies and ezines.

About the author

Mark Cassell lives on the south-east coast of the United Kingdom with his wife and many animals. His jobs have included baker, lab technician, driving instructor, actor, and was once a spotlight operator for an Elvis Presley impersonator.
As the author of the best-selling Shadow Fabric mythos, he’s written under several pen names with over 150 stories published in magazines and anthologies. Though his passion remains embedded in dark fantasy and horror, he’s written steampunk, fantasy and sci-fi, and regularly crosses the blurry lines between genres.
Most recently he’s seen publication in the children’s market. In particular, a Would You Rather game book series that has proven popular, and a successful range of pirate activity books. Mark often says how the “Pirate Thing” is a latent interest that will always astonish him.
A proud addition to his bibliography is through Caffeine Nights Publishing with the horror novel, Parasite Crop. Since signing that contract, he remains humbled in the knowledge he now shares the same publisher as one of his literary heroes from the late-1980s, a bygone time when he sneakily read novels at the back of school classrooms.
Incidentally, Mark never got caught.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2020Unique stories. Each one takes you too a new terrifying place. Thrilling read. Each story takes you to a new horror.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2020I had a hard time with this book, I didn't not enjoy it. It was just a bit harder for me to follow. I believe that is on me, I believe that I was missing some of the backstory. I may be totally wrong in saying this, but I think I would have seen it clearer had I read the Shadow Fabric ( Mark's previous novel about the unknown history of witchcraft and the true cause of the great fire of London ) first. While I now own The Shadow Fabric, I have not read it yet. This was my 2nd experience with Mark's work having read a short story in the In Darkness Delight ( Corpus Press ) anthology last year.
What I can tell you is that Mark has his own thing. He has created is own corner of the Horror world. We do not get into any of the old tired tropes here. These stories are a combination of being able to stand alone and slightly intertwining as part of his grander mythos. This is not an easy read that you can just breeze your way through. This is a deep and dark abyss of a world that DEMANDS your focus and commitment. There is a disorienting quality to it all. And in the end the evil forces at play are vast and mysterious. You get the feeling you are seeing the enemy in the form of smoky tendrils and shadows and faceless people and black fungus, but you aren't REALLY seeing the enemy. There is an all powerful, unseen perception to the whole thing. Super original premise, you have not been here before with any other author.
My top 4 stories were:
4. A Story Of Amber - "The Amber Can Do Many Wondrous Things"
3. Pile Of Dirt - The first story in the book, extremely creep tale with a Halloween backdrop, deals in recovery, loss, holding on.
2. Red, White And Black - a 1980's clinical trial gone awry, cool bits about the death of John Lennon and the Beatles' Hey Jude ( our main is Judy ) worked in.
1. Rebirth - mysterious easter eggs, portals to a black underworld, portals to rebirth.
Again - original imaginative disorienting inescapable darkness.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2020I'd had Mark Cassell on my radar for a while, ever since I read a collaboration of his with another writer I admire, so I jumped at the chance to get a review copy if this collection.
Stitches and Threads starts off with a bang, with the enthralling short story, Pile of Dirt. An interesting premise that I won't spoil, and some tense horror painted in brief, eerie brushstrokes. The collection continues with stories of varying length, seemingly unrelated though with some interesting common threads, hence the title, I would guess. As I read, I started seeing more and more connections in the seemingly unrelated horrors that were taking place - none if it was repetitive, but the reader can see a certain theme being drawn together. There were a couple that didn't seem like they were part of the overall theme - the last in the collection, A Sunset Companion, doesn't seem to be linked, but is still an eerie, poignant little tale that stands just fine on its own.
I'm not certain, but I think these stories might tie in with some of the author's earlier work, dealing with the shadow fabric. I have plans to check it out and confirm my theory, but all in all this is a strong collection from an inventive author. If I have one little nit, it's with the word repetition. There were a few instances of an unusual word being used in several stories, one after another, the kind of thing that stood out, but that wouldn't have if I'd read these farther apart. It wasn't enough to spoil my enjoyment of the read, or to knock off even a half star. Would recommend.
I was given this book in exhange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2021You don't have to read The Shadow Fabric to thoroughly enjoy Stitches & Threads, but I think the combination of the two is inevitably better in every way. The collection of short stories revolve around The Shadow Fabric and it is absolutely brilliant. Darkness has never unfolded in such insidious and permanent ways. Cassell turns evil into a backpack that you can never shrug off, can never unburden yourself from. Stitches & Threads is well written, highly descriptive, and a dark joy to read. Admittedly, I was so disappointed to finish the book, I had to order more of the author's work. Well done Mr. Cassell. You have made a lifelong fan. Cheers.
