Terror Threads - a collection of short horror stories: paranormal and supernatural (Shadow Fabric Mythos Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Pull a thread ... and you'll be dead.

Ten standalone tales in the best-selling Shadow Fabric mythos. Each story of ghosts, of demons, of the occult, weaves the mythos tighter and proves we all have the power to see in the dark.

Both an introduction to the Shadow Fabric and a companion book, this collection of horror stories contains the following:

"Dust Devils" - When a driving instructor's pupil fails to turn up for a lesson, he doesn't just drive off. He investigates ... things.

"A Story of Amber" - Two brothers and a grandfather's secret. This is a story that begins in childhood and ends in adulthood.

"Claimed" - In Yellowstone Country Park things are black.

"The Rebirth" - A primary school teacher's lesson fails to go to plan when a peculiar Easter egg lands in her possession.

"Dead Lines" - An artist learns she is not the only one holding the brush.

"Pile of Dirt" - After a serious accident, all you want to do is relax in your garden. But the mysterious pile of dirt that has appeared on your lawn bugs the hell out of you.

"The Commission" - A photographer's commission proves to be a pain in the neck.

"Diagonal Dead" - It's a shame the dead can't stay dead, especially those who are discovered in a wall cavity.

"Demon Alcohol" - Staying at a bed and breakfast in a quaint harbour town, Tammy is not in the mood for uninvited guests. Especially when she's hungover and the guests are demons.

"A Sunset Companion" - The low October sun can cause road accidents by blinding drivers ... but perhaps there are other causes in the surrounding woodland.

Most of the stories featured in this collection have been previously published in anthologies.

What the reviewers say.

Dust Devils (first published in
Tales from the Lake Vol.4 (Crystal Lake Publishing, 2017)

"When a driving instructor went to pick up his last learner, he did not expect to get involved in a mystical monster attack. Having read other work by this author I was not disappointed with the story. An ancient monster, a deranged man and bloody death scenes, all things that I love..." -
Amazon reviewer

A Story of Amber (first published in
Collected Halloween Horror Shorts (KJK Publications, 2017):

"Brothers Chuck and Dillion were farm kids who experienced an unexplainable freakish event in their fields one Halloween. They are all grown up now and have unfortunately drifted apart. You've heard of gemstones having healing properties, well, what if the opposite was true... Oh that antagonistic Amber, a beauty to be wary of as it unifies and evades.

So damn unique, I had NO idea what was going on here I just knew that I was digging it.

Mark is a very highly regarded indie author with quite a few highly regarded works out there. I have only read two short stories of his, so far, but I can totally see why. His writing is like alternate (yet not bizarro) dimension kind of stuff, multi layered with precise attention to detail. I really need to check out more from him. His Shadow Fabric Mythos series is....yep, you guessed it, very highly regarded." -
Goodreads review

The Rebirth (first published in
Collected Easter Horror Shorts (KJK Publications, 2017):

"A wooden egg and a nasty surprise. I like how throughout you are following Kelly as she tries to rescue one of her students. The descriptive style makes you feel as you are walking Kelly's steps. Whilst this is not graphic it has that creepy feel to it and will make your imagination work overtime." -

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Mark Cassell lives on the south-east coast of the United Kingdom with his wife and many animals. His jobs have included baker, lab technician, driving instructor, actor, and was once a spotlight operator for an Elvis Presley impersonator.

As the author of the best-selling Shadow Fabric mythos, he’s written under several pen names with over 150 stories published in magazines and anthologies. Though his passion remains embedded in dark fantasy and horror, he’s written steampunk, fantasy and sci-fi, and regularly crosses the blurry lines between genres.

Most recently he’s seen publication in the children’s market. In particular, a Would You Rather game book series that has proven popular, and a successful range of pirate activity books. Mark often says how the “Pirate Thing” is a latent interest that will always astonish him.

A proud addition to his bibliography is through Caffeine Nights Publishing with the horror novel, Parasite Crop. Since signing that contract, he remains humbled in the knowledge he now shares the same publisher as one of his literary heroes from the late-1980s, a bygone time when he sneakily read novels at the back of school classrooms.

Incidentally, Mark never got caught.

This was a great bunch of stories!

Going to do a breakdown of each story with a few cryptic words without giving away spoilers.

Dust Devils: Mini tornado that comes alive and wrecks havoc in one home.

A Story of Amber: Amber that seems to love the feel of blood among other things.

Claimed: Tree roots show what they are really capable of doing besides keeping trees rooted.

The Rebirth: An egg that is very unique and very deadly.

Pile of Dirt: Dirt that comes alive.....(that is about all I can say without spoilers)

Dead Lines: Paintings that reflect death, but unknown to the artist. (I know - it is cryptic.)

The Commission: A ghost deal that goes wrong with a photographer.

Diagonal Dead: Doppelganger switch-a-roo! (Oh this one you got to read - freaky.)

Demon Alcohol: Alcohol induced hallucinations? Or something else?

A Sunset Companion: Seat belt safety is a must.....

    Thoughts:

I really liked these short stories as they were all original and unique. I have read this author before in an anthology with some other authors, but this is the first time I have read anything by this author himself. Very impressed with how all the stories just played out and some of the stories were just fast paced as things were happening to keep me flipping my kindle pages. I have a few more books by this author simmering on my kindle and will be stepping back into his work soon. Giving this one four "cool and collected" stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark horror at its best.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 10, 2019
A brilliant, terrifying collection of horror stories. The last story, Sunset Companion has a nice little twist at the end to finish it off. My favourite has to be Diagonal Dead, but I also really enjoyed Dust Devils and Rebirth.

Mark Cassell continues his exploration of shadows and mist in this collection and a couple of stories were reminiscent of Hell Cat of the Holt. There are terrifying moments, and intrigue that just keep you turning the page and things you couldn't imagine even in your worst nightmares.

These stories aren't for the faint hearted or the squeamish, but for those that like their horror dark, these are definitely for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good selection from Mr. Cassell ..
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 27, 2018
The second collection of horror stories from Mark Cassell - the first being the highly recommended Sinister Stitches - Terror Threads is another selection of tales within the Shadow Fabric universe, and is a welcome mix of the strange, the unnerving and the outright gory.

Now, while I've said in previous reviews of Mark's work, that I can take-or-leave the more *splashy* blood and guts stories, they never bore or tire; unlike some authors who write for horror - especially on the ebook platform. It also helps that these are usually followed by a more subdued story, which I find much easier to fall into.
That said, there are a couple in this collection that seem either a *little* rushed, or could've used another draft, but that is being pretty harsh. All-in-all, Terror Threads is a book of ten tales that will certainly do their job of shivering the spine. Recommended.
