Bestselling horror writer

Mark Cassell lives in a rural part of the UK where he often dreams of dystopian futures, peculiar creatures, and flitting shadows. Primarily a horror writer, his steampunk, dark fantasy, and SF stories have featured in several anthologies and ezines. His best-selling debut novel,
The Shadow Fabric, is closely followed by the popular short story collection, Sinister Stitches, and are both only a fraction of an expanding mythos of demons, devices, and deceit.

The dystopian sci-fi short story collection,
Chaos Halo 1.0: Alpha Beta Gamma Kill, is in association with Future Chronicles Photography where he works closely with their models and cosplayers.

His work has been compared with British horror authors such as James Herbert, Clive Barker, Dennis Wheatley, and Brian Lumley. Also, his influences spread over to the US where he admits to having been first inspired by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Dan Simmons, and H P Lovecraft.

Mark Cassell lives on the south-east coast of the United Kingdom with his wife and many animals. His jobs have included baker, lab technician, driving instructor, actor, and was once a spotlight operator for an Elvis Presley impersonator.

As the author of the best-selling Shadow Fabric mythos, he’s written under several pen names with over 150 stories published in magazines and anthologies. Though his passion remains embedded in dark fantasy and horror, he’s written steampunk, fantasy and sci-fi, and regularly crosses the blurry lines between genres.

Most recently he’s seen publication in the children’s market. In particular, a Would You Rather game book series that has proven popular, and a successful range of pirate activity books. Mark often says how the “Pirate Thing” is a latent interest that will always astonish him.

A proud addition to his bibliography is through Caffeine Nights Publishing with the horror novel, Parasite Crop. Since signing that contract, he remains humbled in the knowledge he now shares the same publisher as one of his literary heroes from the late-1980s, a bygone time when he sneakily read novels at the back of school classrooms.

Incidentally, Mark never got caught.

This is the first story I've read from Mark Cassell, but I am hooked. Ten Minutes till Deadtime was a great horror short story, set in The Shadow Fabric mythos. The plot was unusual, creepy, and interesting, and keeps you guessing until the very end. After reading this story, I will be reading The Shadow Fabric. Highly recommended!

This is another great short story. A good companion piece for the rest of the Shadow Fabric mythos created by the author. I thought this one was well-written and packed a lot of grisly fun for such a short story. And the bonus short at the end was just as good. Well done.

A genuinely creepy short story about one of my favorite themes in horror, the fine line between dreamtime and our waking lives. This story was my introduction to the author's Shadow Fabric Mythos, but I'll definitely be reading more in this series. Well-written and captivating.

But then again, it is a small part of something bigger, it seems, so perhaps that can be forgiven. Though I would suggest reading a different book in the Shadow Fabric mythos first. It isn't bad for what it is, but I did feel like I was missing something, or that there should have been something more.

Don’t start reading any of Mark Cassell’s stories unless you have sufficient time or make sure the oven is turned down, a definite ‘I couldn’t put it down’ read. This is compelling reading with exquisite imagery and intriguing story lines. A dark supernatural theme where the main character is haunted by voices that compel him to write messages at the witching hour 03.33 a.m. The story is accompanied by a further equally intriguing piece and an extract from another of his books, a taster for The Shadow Fabric. I liked the style of this author; here is imagery that appeals to all the senses, sight, sound, smell I could almost taste the sulphur! I do love a writer who can write. Mark Cassell likes to lure you in, then clamp down on your hands and yank you into the well of his dark tales. I connect with his characters quickly, and just as quickly decide I never want to be in their shoes! "Ten Minutes Till Deadtime" is that kind of story.

This is a very interesting, quick read. It kept me guessing why the protagonist was waking at 3:33 every night until the very end. Very nice short story. Creepy.

From what I've read, this story is a jumping off point. The ideas are there to create a solid mythos, they just need developing. I look forward to reading the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent horror story!

Ten Minutes Till Deadtime, is an exciting story by the highly talented horror writer Mark Cassell, and takes place within the Shadow Fabric mythos universe. The tale begins with the main character Terry, constantly waking up to an alarm, that strangely keeps going off at 3.33 a.m. even though it was not set for this time. One particular morning, Terry wakes up to find a mysterious piece of paper in his hand which says “Release the Forgotten” and has no recollection of when he wrote this note? I strongly urge you to read this story for yourself; I highly enjoy Mark Cassell's style of horror writing and I am sure you will too. Additionally, there is a brilliant bonus story included which is also set within the Shadow Fabric mythos.
