From the Author
She glanced toward my bookshelf. "Maybe you should read a book."
I followed her line of sight. "I've already read them all."
Fal shot me a look of disbelief. Perhaps she was surprised that I had memory of reading the books. "All of them?"
"Yes. You know that along with my hyperthymesia I also have an eidetic memory. I need only look at the title to clearly recall every last page of text. I have page upon page in my memory right now and can recall each in an instant."
She frowned and walked over to the tall shelf. "But...these are all text books!"
"I have seven educational degrees, what else would I read?"
She was silent for a few moments before pacing over to the front door. She grabbed her purse from where it hung on the coat rack. "Grab your wallet and let's go."
Her abrupt attitude shift had me concerned. "Where are we going?"
"I just realized that in all the years I've known you, I've never seen you read a single fiction book. I think it's time I introduced you to the grand master of science fiction."
I blinked in surprise, unsure who she was talking about. "Stephen Hawking?"
She actually growled at me, like an animal. "Wallet, now." She tapped her smart watch. We're leaving in sixty seconds!"
I retrieved my cell phone from the end table in the living room and grabbed my wallet from the bag hanging by the door where I had relocated it the previous evening. I slid each into the front pockets of my khakis. "I'm ready."
"Good. Prepare to be inspired."
"Inspired?"
"Absolutely. One of the great things about science fiction is that it introduces you to notions and technology that don't currently exist yet have the potential to exist. Thousands of modern scientific inventions and concepts were first introduced and birthed through the medium of fiction."
I considered her assertion. "I thought that necessity was the mother of invention, not fiction."
Fal laughed. "Well if necessity was the mother of invention, then imagination is surely the father. Come on." I wasn't about to decline her offer.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2021I love this book. It was suspenseful and thought provoking. I read it twice. First fast to find out what happens and then more slowly to savor the experience.
Alex is an engineer who wakes up from a coma, ready to resume her project of creating an android that could pass the Turing test. She finds a need for more interactions with friends and co-workers, more life then she has had before.
She is initially guided by her best friend, Falguni, who is sad and distant initially. She quickly finds Emily, veterinarian and new love interest. Alex and Emily work trough Alex memory loss, lack of experience and insecurity.
I had to look up the formal definition of a Turing Test. A single blinded test where an examiner asked questions of a computer and a person to try to distinguish which is the computer. There is an annual prize for a machine that fools the examiner. It is frequently claimed. Programmers have learned to program in typos to fool the examiner. The silver audio version has never been won. Nor has the gold prize for an audio and video Android.
The Turing tests are an integral part of this novel.

In this book, the Turing test was Alex herself. She does not even know that she is Synthetica until she takes herself off of the essential chemical. She was trying to be more human than her prior self... and succeeded.
Emily was looking for Alex to be a better partner than her prior lovers... and Alex succeeded. Emily is the perfect person to love her. A vet who is used to looking for actions rather than words from her animal patients.
Falguni knows that Alex is the experiment, but Alex still wins, by being more human than Flaguni expects and being a better friend than Alex's creator.
Dad tries to stay out of it. He does not want to play the game, but Alex wins him over. She is the grand daughter he thought he would never have. And confirmation of his daughter's success.
For me, Alex was human. Her insecurities and ambitions so real. She came across as so earnest and good.
I liked that it was Alex personality, her experience comparing herself to Alexandra and her small thoughtless evils that guided Alex morals and her devotio. To protecting her loved ones, rather than some coded imperative that allowed her the freedom to manage to save herself and her family.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021You know a book is great when you're filled with emotion at the end. While there's a lot of high tech science in this work, it's all heart. Loved the idea and the execution. I don't feel the need to say much about this book because the blurb is available and it's just one that needs to be experienced. Almost anything I say would give something away and really, there's just no need. I'm so glad some of my reader friends stayed on me about reading this. What a wonderfully unusual and satisfying experience! And now I need to read more by Aten. Wow - truly impressive!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2022That was a fun read!
Plenty of nerdy-geeky stuff, adventure, loyalty, discovery, and true love. A clever idea brought to beautiful fruition. Nice job K. Aten!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2021I just want to keep saying WOW over and over. This book was absolutely brilliant.
Dr. Alexandra Turing (Alex) wakes up from a six-month coma only remembering the last two years of her life.
Much of this story centers around the mystery of what her family’s company is hiding. It then also centers around the romance between Alex and Emily, a veterinarian Alex meets by chance.
I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this book.
Remember Me, Synthetica is a truly superb work of sapphic science fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2020Wow, K Aten never fails to deliver. The writing as usual was amazing and chemistry between the two romantic leads was great. However if you're going in to read this for the romance don't it's the secondary plot which while awesome (A+ for that) was not the main plot of the story. The main plot was great and while a bit predictable perhaps to those that read heaps of this kinds of stories it was still different possibly because if the POV it took. I wish Aten had expanded a bit on the epilogue but that's more of a personal preference then anything.
Overall 5.5 stars (I gave it an extra .5 'cause I love the chapter titles)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2021I'm still enjoying the high of finishing a new book, and so it won't hit me till I wake up later today(0540 stayed up to finish it). I cannot express in words what reading this has been like, but for the purposes of you, dear future reader, I will try. This is the new diamond standard of scifi lesfic. With a beautifully crafted environment, and I say environment instead of world because aside from changing around a few buildings(I presume) this is set in everyday USA. The tech company is self contained, and outside of that it's just another day in the life. Alex post coma was an absolute wonder to be inside her head for this wonderful journey, and watching her rediscover the world around her was fascinating. The ending was a bit to be expected, but its still a lesfic, however it was delivered with grace. I am gushing about the book, im absolutely in love. There aren't a lot of *scenes*, and that works in the books favor. There's so much going on and the scenes we do get are my god everything you'd want or expect from a lesfic. I will say though, of everything that was highlighted, that the end of chapter 17 wasn't already left me a bit sad. Iconic, and I won't say more so as to let you enjoy it on your own read. It's absolutely worth it
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2021I loved this book. Although it’s pretty obvious where it’s all going very early on, that does not subtract to the thrill and interest of the story in the least. The fact that it’s told in the first person, from Alex point of view, makes it a really interesting ride.
Alex is one of the most endearing characters I’ve read in a long time, she is so damn PRECIOUS that it filled my heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2020Wow, just wow. This book had me right from the start. First person can be tricky but in this case, not only did it work but it enhanced the author's ability to tell the story at a great pace. It definitely has sciencey moments which were nerdtastic but the story of Alex and Emily was heartwarming and beautiful. This book will make you #think, #feel, and #discuss. Must read. Instant favorite!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Emotions
The book for its self is not so bad. The story is well crafted but predictable. The main character with all of her skill and intellect is a long time clueless. This breaks the immersion in a disappointing way.
If you are a little computer savvy this could be a turn down when you are reading this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done !
The amount of tech language was too much for me but except that, it was interesting plot, great romance and good dialogues.
This is the first time that I read a first-person narrative. It was unusual.
I would have loved to get to know what was happening in Emilys mind a little more.
Good works and the cover of this book is stunning !

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read, but a little rushed
Firstly I really enjoyed this novel and the characters that inhabit the thoroughly believable world. The reason I did not give it a fifth star is that the end felt a bit rushed. Having been brought up on I Robot the idea of breaking the three laws of robotics seems an odd way to resolve the story. It was the only part of this book that jarred with me. The heroin is a kind gentle soul and the idea of killing another person when it was not necessary strikes me as out of character.
