This is a story to be read to a child. It has drama and fun, even playful romance. Kay El Magnus’ narrative is very smoothly written and flows beautifully. The writing voice has a spunky vitality to it. There will be suspense for a child. This is a good book to talk about jealousy, heroism, risk-taking, rules and breaking them. Maurice Calloway III’s art work is crisp, vivid and colorful. This was a pleasure to read and will be fun for a child to hear.

Bought the second book in the Adventures of Darla and Mickey series, as my niece and I genuinely enjoyed the first. Raven Midnight is sequel loyal in tone and theme, incorporating themes of personal freedom and choice, fear of the unknown, and coping with unideal and unforseen circumstances. The content is suited well for our 7 year old niece, who enjoys reading it outloud, or being read to.

Some minor issues with grammar and punctuation. The story slips in and out of past to present tense and back again, but overall, it’s a darling little story for kids with cute illustrations. The reading level is more advanced than the age level that would enjoy this book, therefore I would suggest it as a read-aloud book.

I tried reading this on my paperwhite and my iphone. On both, there were several words per page that too faded to read. From what I could follow, the odd couple story line was cute as were the illustrations.

I will rescore this once the author tells me the font formatting problem has been resolved
