Shattered Reality (Summoned Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

The only reality that matters is the one believed in and that can change in the blink of an eye... or a glance in the mirror.

Mudesa Black clawed her way to the top, becoming a successful and respected psychiatrist, leaving her estranged family in the dust. The plan was to never look back and she hadn't until a single phone call changed everything. Trading her physician's coat for a detective cap, she headed home to meet both fears and destiny head on.

Perry P. worked as a private investigator in Knollville, taking on whatever cases came his way. His latest, and only, client had no issues spending money—just the way he liked it. They were also anonymous—just the way he didn't like it. Still, the job was easy money. All he needed to do was watch some dame for a few months.

There are mysteries waiting in the aging mansion. Solving them might bring closure to both in ways neither imagined possible.

Shattered Reality is a fantasy retelling of the ancient mythological tale of Perseus and Medusa set in modern times.

C.A. King is not a new author to me but I have to say that she impresses me with every book I have read by her. This story has the feel of the ancient story of Perseus and Medusa. Who doesn’t love a good fantasy/paranormal with a mythological feeling? This book takes place in Knollville. Ms. King loves to tell us the story. She tells a wonderful story with her descriptive vocabulary. Her characters come to life in the story. Medusa is the main character who has high expectations for herself. There is one small tiny problem one phone call becomes a major problem. Perry P. is a private investigator who takes any case that comes across his desk. These two are the main characters of the story. You do not want to take your eyes off of Medusa and Perry. I will leave you with these descriptions because you will have to read the story to get the details. I highly recommend this story.

Mudesa Black is a talented psychiatrist who has a few issues of her own. When she receives word that her parents have been killed in an accident, she is forced to head home and deal with her parents' obsession--magic. Having been estranged from them for years, Mudesa refused to believe in magic and fled their strange life style. But now she is face-to-face with a past that may consume her and a handsome man who may hold the answers she needs.

I've always enjoyed Ms. King's writing and this is no exception. However, I'd really rate this a 3.5 as I felt the transitions were not always smooth and it seemed to me that a few critical paragraphs were missing which made the story feel disjointed at points. I did enjoy Mudesa's character and her struggles as well as the overall story itself.

Needless to say, I'll be looking forward to the next installment.

    Shattered Reality (Summoned Book 1)
    By C.A. King
    5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book Shattered Reality (Summoned Book 1) by C.A. King. It is a story that includes magic, mystery, and danger. Once I started reading, I was hooked. I enjoyed reading about the character Mudesa Black. She is a psychiatrist and someone intelligent, independent, and strong. She has now found herself on her way back home, a place that she hasn’t been to in a long time. It is there that she meets Perry P, a private investigator. He is handsome, charming, and has Mudesa taking a second look. Will Mudesa find out the mystery behind her fears? What will she find at her family’s estate? Read this book to find out. This story had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. I found the character of Mudesa changing as the story progressed. I was rooting for her to succeed in finding out the mystery she uncovers once returns home. The author has created a wonderful fantasy book in which the story and the characters come alive on the page. Don’t miss out on an exciting and entertaining book that you will not want to put down until the final page. I highly recommend reading it.

First - I love the twist on the main character's name. Mudesa (wink wink) is perfect!! And it's only the beginning. I loved the mirror magic in this story and the many, many twists that came with it.
CA King has a wonderful writing style that makes her stories so easy to read.

Shattered Reality by C.A. King a five-star read that will shatter you. This is the first novel in the Summoned series and shows us promise of a great series that will shatter you. I will admit that it was a little jumpy and disjointed at times, and almost felt like it could have done with another round of edits just to help it run smoother, but the story was well done and well plotted. That was why I decided on five-stars as I have read this author previously and know that usually with a strong story like this would get five-stars every time. Medusa Black well I don’t want to give the game away, but wow what a character, you get pulled into her story, that was part of what made this story so great. Then when you add in P.I. Perry P, it just explodes into this culmination that knocks the story to the next level, if the second half was as well put together as the first it would one of the best books this year, that’s how much I adored this story, I for one cant wait for more.

I thought this book was an awesome one. It was my first book by this author but it will not be my last. I thought it was well written and it pulled me in from page one. The main charcters are what made this story really good for me. They were relatable, awesome and hot hot hot! This book had some twists and turns and that just make me like it even more and kept me turning page after page. All of the romance and mystery and magic came together in this awesome story and I cannot wait to read more by this author! I would recommend this to a friend!
    Happy Reading!

Shattered Reality (Summoned Book 1) by C.A. King

Shattered Reality is a cool modern fantasy version of an ancient mythology story and I like how C.A. King approached it. Magic, mirrors, secrets, and mystery were covered, along with some self-exploration and processing of Mudesa Black’s own personal and family issues. The story and characters were great, drawing me in from the start and having me read the book in one long setting. Mudesa is a strong, driven, independent, mental health professional who’s life has had complications, loss, and things that have impacted her life in many ways. It was nice to see her character grow, learn, and progress throughout the book. I was left wanting more and I do want to try out more books that are updated takes on myths.

Shattered Reality is the first book in the Summoned Series by C.A King. It is a fantastic story- entirely original, well written, and very clever. It is a modern retelling, based on the ancient story of Perseus and Medusa. Hello, she had me at Medusa- as I love the old myths. We are back in Knollville- where Ms. King has taken us before- so we know we are in for a paranormal treat right from the get-go!
There is more to Mudesa Black than meets the eye. The psychologist spends her days helping people solve their problems, all the while hiding her own demons from the world. On the surface, she may seem like she has an enviable life, but Mudesa has worked really hard to get where she is. With secrets that weigh heavily on her mind- her past impacts her daily life in a way she can’t seem to escape. She is forced to return to her hometown, when her parents are killed. It’s the very place she worked so hard to leave behind, and the place she never wanted to see again. There is more to the situation that meets the eye- but the past seems determined to snatch her future from her grasp.
My review may seem a little vague, but that is on purpose, as I don’t want to give anything away. This is the kind of story I really recommend going into somewhat ‘blind’ and letting the author, and story, surprise you.
This is a wonderfully twisted tale that definitely kept me entertained.
Another great read from Ms. King’s limitless imagination!

    Thank you, C.A King!

Mudesa Black worked hard to get where she was. She helps people with their problems, hiding her own demons and secrets. She didn't believe in magic, but insanity, that was something she understood. Her parents had conditioned her to the point she couldn't even look in a mirror. They thought magic was real, but the only reality Mudesa saw was the error of their actions. She would never have returned to her hometown, she would have stayed away, pursued her dream, if not for an accident claiming her parents' lives and the will stipulating she must return. Things in Knollville are ever as they appear, and memories from the past are not always what they seem. Can she discover the truth and her parents' secrets before the past returns to claim her future?

Shattered Reality by C.A. King is the first book in the Summoned book series and takes place in Knollville where magic is rampant and things are never quite as they seem. I enjoyed Mudesa's character and her commitment to applying her own truth to a situation beyond her understanding. With the help of the P.I. Perry P and full reign of her childhood home you'd think she had all the pieces she'd need, so watching her try to assemble the puzzle without first opening her mind to other possibilities. Mystery and history combine to create a tight plot where the past and future clash to affect the fate of all.
